Random Exchange Disorder in the Spin-1/2 XXZ Chain
The one-dimensional XXZ model is studied in the presence of disorder in the
Heisenberg Exchange Integral. Recent predictions obtained from renormalization
group calculations are investigated numerically using a Lanczos algorithm on
chains of up to 18 sites. It is found that in the presence of strong
X-Y-symmetric random exchange couplings, a ``random singlet'' phase with
quasi-long-range order in the spin-spin correlations persists. As the planar
anisotropy is varied, the full zero-temperature phase diagram is obtained and
compared with predictions of Doty and Fisher [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 45 }, 2167
(1992)].Comment: 9 pages + 8 plots appended, RevTex, FSU-SCRI-93-98 and

Health beliefs, attitudes, and health-related quality of life in persons with fibromyalgia : mediating role of treatment adherence
Fibromyalgia is a chronic illness characterized by pain and fatigue. Persons with fibromyalgia experience increased the risk for poor mental and physical health-related quality of life, which may be dependent on multiple factors, including health beliefs, such as confidence in physicians and the health-care system, and health behaviors, such as treatment adherence. Respondents with fibromyalgia (n = 409) were recruited nationally, via support organizations, and completed self-report measures: Multidimensional Health Profile – Health Functioning Index (MHP-H), Short-Form-36 Health Survey (SF-36v2), and Medical Outcomes Study (MOS) Measure of Patient Adherence – General Adherence Items. In mediation models, belief in the healthcare system and health-care personnel, and health efficacy exerted an indirect effect through treatment adherence on mental and physical quality of life. Adaptive health beliefs and attitudes were related to greater treatment adherence and, in turn, to a better quality of life. Maladaptive health beliefs and mistrusting attitudes about physician-level and systemic-level healthcare provision are negatively related to both treatment adherence and consequent physical and mental health-related quality of life in persons with fibromyalgia. Future randomized controlled trials are needed to determine if therapeutic strategies to alter health values might improve adherence and self-rated health
Infrared conductivity of a one-dimensional charge-ordered state: quantum lattice effects
The optical properties of the charge-ordering () phase of the
one-dimensional (1D) half-filled spinless Holstein model are derived at zero
temperature within a well-known variational approach improved including
second-order lattice fluctuations. Within the phase, the static lattice
distortions give rise to the optical interband gap, that broadens as the
strength of the electron-phonon () interaction increases. The lattice
fluctuation effects induce a long subgap tail in the infrared conductivity and
a wide band above the gap energy. The first term is due to the multi-phonon
emission by the charge carriers, the second to the interband transitions
accompanied by the multi-phonon scattering. The results show a good agreement
with experimental spectra.Comment: 5 figure
Gapless Spin-Fluid Ground State in a Random Quantum Heisenberg Magnet
We examine the spin- quantum Heisenberg magnet with Gaussian-random,
infinite-range exchange interactions. The quantum-disordered phase is accessed
by generalizing to symmetry and studying the large limit. For large
the ground state is a spin-glass, while quantum fluctuations produce a
spin-fluid state for small . The spin-fluid phase is found to be generically
gapless - the average, zero temperature, local dynamic spin-susceptibility
obeys \bar{\chi} (\omega ) \sim \log(1/|\omega|) + i (\pi/2) \mbox{sgn}
(\omega) at low frequencies. This form is identical to the phenomenological
`marginal' spectrum proposed by Varma {\em et. al.\/} for the doped cuprates.Comment: 13 pages, REVTEX, 2 figures available by request from

Thermodynamics of Random Ferromagnetic Antiferromagnetic Spin-1/2 Chains
Using the quantum Monte Carlo Loop algorithm, we calculate the temperature
dependence of the uniform susceptibility, the specific heat, the correlation
length, the generalized staggered susceptibility and magnetization of a
spin-1/2 chain with random antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic couplings, down
to very low temperatures. Our data show a consistent scaling behavior in all
the quantities and support strongly the conjecture drawn from the approximate
real-space renormalization group treatment.A statistical analysis scheme is
developed which will be useful for the search of scaling behavior in numerical
and experimental data of random spin chains.Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures, RevTe
Nonlinear analysis of spacecraft thermal models
We study the differential equations of lumped-parameter models of spacecraft
thermal control. Firstly, we consider a satellite model consisting of two
isothermal parts (nodes): an outer part that absorbs heat from the environment
as radiation of various types and radiates heat as a black-body, and an inner
part that just dissipates heat at a constant rate. The resulting system of two
nonlinear ordinary differential equations for the satellite's temperatures is
analyzed with various methods, which prove that the temperatures approach a
steady state if the heat input is constant, whereas they approach a limit cycle
if it varies periodically. Secondly, we generalize those methods to study a
many-node thermal model of a spacecraft: this model also has a stable steady
state under constant heat inputs that becomes a limit cycle if the inputs vary
periodically. Finally, we propose new numerical analyses of spacecraft thermal
models based on our results, to complement the analyses normally carried out
with commercial software packages.Comment: 29 pages, 4 figure
Planar and Poly-Arc Lombardi Drawings
In Lombardi drawings of graphs, edges are represented as circular arcs, and
the edges incident on vertices have perfect angular resolution. However, not
every graph has a Lombardi drawing, and not every planar graph has a planar
Lombardi drawing. We introduce k-Lombardi drawings, in which each edge may be
drawn with k circular arcs, noting that every graph has a smooth 2-Lombardi
drawing. We show that every planar graph has a smooth planar 3-Lombardi drawing
and further investigate topics connecting planarity and Lombardi drawings.Comment: Expanded version of paper appearing in the 19th International

Random Exchange Quantum Heisenberg Chains
The one-dimensional quantum Heisenberg model with random bonds is
studied for and . The specific heat and the zero-field
susceptibility are calculated by using high-temperature series expansions and
quantum transfer matrix method. The susceptibility shows a Curie-like
temperature dependence at low temperatures as well as at high temperatures. The
numerical results for the specific heat suggest that there are anomalously many
low-lying excitations. The qualitative nature of these excitations is discussed
based on the exact diagonalization of finite size systems.Comment: 13 pages, RevTex, 12 figures available on request ([email protected]
Direct amplification of nodD from community DNA reveals the genetic diversity of Rhizobium leguminosarum in soil
Sequences of nodD, a gene found only in rhizobia, were amplified from total community DNA isolated from a pasture soil. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers used, Y5 and Y6, match nodD from Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar trifolii, R. leguminosarum biovar viciae and Sinorhizobium meliloti. The PCR product was cloned and yielded 68 clones that were identified by restriction pattern as derived from biovar trifolii [11 restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) types] and 15 clones identified as viciae (seven RFLP types). These identifications were confirmed by sequencing. There were no clones related to S. meliloti nodD. For comparison, 122 strains were isolated from nodules of white clover (Trifolium repens) growing at the field site, and 134 from nodules on trap plants of T. repens inoculated with the soil. The nodule isolates were of four nodD RFLP types, with 77% being of a single type. All four of these patterns were also found among the clones from soil DNA, and the same type was the most abundant, although it made up only 34% of the trifolii-like clones. We conclude that clover selects specific genotypes from the available soil population, and that R. leguminosarum biovar trifolii was approximately five times more abundant than biovar viciae in this pasture soil, whereas S. meliloti was rare
W=0 Pairing in Carbon Nanotubes away from Half Filling
We use the Hubbard Hamiltonian on the honeycomb lattice to represent the
valence bands of carbon single-wall nanotubes. A detailed symmetry
analysis shows that the model allows W=0 pairs which we define as two-body
singlet eigenstates of with vanishing on-site repulsion. By means of a
non-perturbative canonical transformation we calculate the effective
interaction between the electrons of a W=0 pair added to the interacting ground
state. We show that the dressed W=0 pair is a bound state for resonable
parameter values away from half filling. Exact diagonalization results for the
(1,1) nanotube confirm the expectations. For nanotubes of length ,
the binding energy of the pair depends strongly on the filling and decreases
towards a small but nonzero value as . We observe the existence
of an optimal doping when the number of electrons per C atom is in the range
1.21.3, and the binding energy is of the order of 0.1 1 meV.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figure
