    Installation effects of long-duct pylon-mounted nacelles on a twin-jet transport model with swept supercritical wing

    The installation interference effects of an underwing-mounted, long duct, turbofan nacelle were evaluated in the Langley 16-Foot Transonic Tunnel with two different pylon shapes installed on a twin engine transport model having a supercritical wing swept 30 deg. Wing, pylon, and nacelle pressures and overall model force data were obtained at Mach numbers from 0.70 to 0.83 and nominal angles of attack from -2 deg to 4 deg at an average unit Reynolds number of 11.9 x 1,000,000 per meter. The results show that adding the long duct nacelles to the supercritical wing, in the near sonic flow field, changed the magnitude and direction of flow velocities over the entire span, significantly reduced cruise lift, and caused large interference drag on the nacelle afterbody

    Zirconia toughened SiC whisker reinforced alumina composites small business innovation research

    The objective of this phase 1 project was to develop a ceramic composite with superior fracture toughness and high strength, based on combining two toughness inducing materials: zirconia for transformation toughening and SiC whiskers for reinforcement, in a controlled microstructure alumina matrix. The controlled matrix microstructure is obtained by controlling the nucleation frequency of the alumina gel with seeds (submicron alpha-alumina). The results demonstrate the technical feasibility of producing superior binary composites (Al2O3-ZrO2) and tertiary composites (Al2O3-ZrO2-SiC). Thirty-two composites were prepared, consolidated, and fracture toughness tested. Statistical analysis of the results showed that: (1) the SiC type is the key statistically significant factor for increased toughness; (2) sol-gel processing with a-alumina seed had a statistically significant effect on increasing toughness of the binary and tertiary composites compared to the corresponding mixed powder processing; and (3) ZrO2 content within the range investigated had a minor effect. Binary composites with an average critical fracture toughness of 6.6MPam sup 1/2, were obtained. Tertiary composites with critical fracture toughness in the range of 9.3 to 10.1 MPam sup 1/2 were obtained. Results indicate that these composites are superior to zirconia toughened alumina and SiC whisker reinforced alumina ceramic composites produced by conventional techniques with similar composition from published data

    Weighted feature selection criteria for visual servoing of a telerobot

    Because of the continually changing environment of a space station, visual feedback is a vital element of a telerobotic system. A real time visual servoing system would allow a telerobot to track and manipulate randomly moving objects. Methodologies for the automatic selection of image features to be used to visually control the relative position between an eye-in-hand telerobot and a known object are devised. A weighted criteria function with both image recognition and control components is used to select the combination of image features which provides the best control. Simulation and experimental results of a PUMA robot arm visually tracking a randomly moving carburetor gasket with a visual update time of 70 milliseconds are discussed

    Pseudorandom Generators for Width-3 Branching Programs

    We construct pseudorandom generators of seed length O~(log(n)log(1/ϵ))\tilde{O}(\log(n)\cdot \log(1/\epsilon)) that ϵ\epsilon-fool ordered read-once branching programs (ROBPs) of width 33 and length nn. For unordered ROBPs, we construct pseudorandom generators with seed length O~(log(n)poly(1/ϵ))\tilde{O}(\log(n) \cdot \mathrm{poly}(1/\epsilon)). This is the first improvement for pseudorandom generators fooling width 33 ROBPs since the work of Nisan [Combinatorica, 1992]. Our constructions are based on the `iterated milder restrictions' approach of Gopalan et al. [FOCS, 2012] (which further extends the Ajtai-Wigderson framework [FOCS, 1985]), combined with the INW-generator [STOC, 1994] at the last step (as analyzed by Braverman et al. [SICOMP, 2014]). For the unordered case, we combine iterated milder restrictions with the generator of Chattopadhyay et al. [CCC, 2018]. Two conceptual ideas that play an important role in our analysis are: (1) A relabeling technique allowing us to analyze a relabeled version of the given branching program, which turns out to be much easier. (2) Treating the number of colliding layers in a branching program as a progress measure and showing that it reduces significantly under pseudorandom restrictions. In addition, we achieve nearly optimal seed-length O~(log(n/ϵ))\tilde{O}(\log(n/\epsilon)) for the classes of: (1) read-once polynomials on nn variables, (2) locally-monotone ROBPs of length nn and width 33 (generalizing read-once CNFs and DNFs), and (3) constant-width ROBPs of length nn having a layer of width 22 in every consecutive polylog(n)\mathrm{poly}\log(n) layers.Comment: 51 page

    The Wendelstein Calar Alto Pixellensing Project (WeCAPP): the M31 Nova catalogue

    We present light curves from the novae detected in the long-term, M31 monitoring WeCAPP project. The goal of WeCAPP is to constrain the compact dark matter fraction of the M31 halo with microlensing observations. As a by product we have detected 91 novae benefiting from the high cadence and highly sensitive difference imaging technique required for pixellensing. We thus can now present the largest CCD and optical filters based nova light curve sample up-to-date towards M31. We also obtained thorough coverage of the light curve before and after the eruption thanks to the long-term monitoring. We apply the nova taxonomy proposed by Strope et al. (2010) to our nova candidates and found 29 S-class novae, 10 C-class novae, 2 O-class novae and 1 J-class nova. We have investigated the universal decline law advocated by Hachichu and Kato (2006) on the S-class novae. In addition, we correlated our catalogue with the literature and found 4 potential recurrent novae. Part of our catalogue has been used to search for optical counter-parts of the super soft X-ray sources detected in M31 (Pietsch et al. 2005). Optical surveys like WeCAPP, and coordinated with multi-wavelength observation, will continue to shed light on the underlying physical mechanism of novae in the future.Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures, 7 tables, A&A accepted for publication.
