    A partially collapsed Gibbs sampler for Bayesian quantile regression

    We introduce a set of new Gibbs sampler for Bayesian analysis of quantile re-gression model. The new algorithm, which partially collapsing an ordinary Gibbs sampler, is called Partially Collapsed Gibbs (PCG) sampler. Although the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm has been employed in Bayesian quantile regression, including median regression, PCG has superior convergence properties to an ordinary Gibbs sampler. Moreover, Our PCG sampler algorithm, which is based on a theoretic derivation of an asymmetric Laplace as scale mixtures of normal distributions, requires less computation than the ordinary Gibbs sampler and can significantly reduce the computation involved in approximating the Bayes Factor and marginal likelihood. Like the ordinary Gibbs sampler, the PCG sample can also be used to calculate any associated marginal and predictive distributions. The quantile regression PCG sampler is illustrated by analysing simulated data and the data of length of stay in hospital. The latter provides new insight into hospital perfor-mance.     Noise spectra of stochastic pulse sequences: application to large scale magnetization flips in the finite size 2D Ising model

    We provide a general scheme to predict and derive the contribution to the noise spectrum of a stochastic sequence of pulses from the distribution of pulse parameters. An example is the magnetization noise spectra of a 2D Ising system near its phase transition. At TTcT\le T_c, the low frequency spectra is dominated by magnetization flips of nearly the entire system. We find that both the predicted and the analytically derived spectra fit those produced from simulations. Subtracting this contribution leaves the high frequency spectra which follow a power law set by the critical exponents.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures.     Study of ΛbΛ(ϕ,η())\Lambda_b\to \Lambda (\phi,\eta^{(\prime)}) and ΛbΛK+K\Lambda_b\to \Lambda K^+K^- decays

    We study the charmless two-body ΛbΛ(ϕ,η())\Lambda_b\to \Lambda (\phi,\eta^{(\prime)}) and three-body ΛbΛK+K\Lambda_b\to \Lambda K^+K^- decays. We obtain B(ΛbΛϕ)=(3.53±0.24)×106{\cal B}(\Lambda_b\to \Lambda\phi)=(3.53\pm 0.24)\times 10^{-6} to agree with the recent LHCb measurement. However, we find that B(ΛbΛ(ϕ)K+K)=(1.71±0.12)×106{\cal B}(\Lambda_b\to \Lambda(\phi\to)K^+ K^-)=(1.71\pm 0.12)\times 10^{-6} is unable to explain the LHCb observation of B(ΛbΛK+K)=(15.9±1.2±1.2±2.0)×106{\cal B}(\Lambda_b\to\Lambda K^+ K^-)=(15.9\pm 1.2\pm 1.2\pm 2.0)\times 10^{-6}, which implies the possibility for other contributions, such as that from the resonant ΛbKN,NΛK+\Lambda_b\to K^- N^*,\,N^*\to\Lambda K^+ decay with NN^* as a higher-wave baryon state. For ΛbΛη()\Lambda_b\to \Lambda \eta^{(\prime)}, we show that B(ΛbΛη,Λη)=(1.47±0.35,1.83±0.58)×106{\cal B}(\Lambda_b\to \Lambda\eta,\,\Lambda\eta^\prime)= (1.47\pm 0.35,1.83\pm 0.58)\times 10^{-6}, which are consistent with the current data of (9.35.3+7.3,<3.1)×106(9.3^{+7.3}_{-5.3},<3.1)\times 10^{-6}, respectively. Our results also support the relation of B(ΛbΛη)B(ΛbΛη){\cal B}(\Lambda_b\to \Lambda\eta) \simeq {\cal B}(\Lambda_b\to\Lambda\eta^\prime), given by the previous study.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure, revised version accepted by EPJ

    The nuclear effects in the spin-dependent structure functions g1Dg_1^D and b2Db_2^D are calculated in the relativistic approach based on the Bethe-Salpeter equation with a realistic meson-exchange potential. The results of calculations are compared with the non-relativistic calculations.     Evaluation of aerothermal modeling computer programs

    Various computer programs based upon the SIMPLE or SIMPLER algorithm were studied and compared for numerical accuracy, efficiency, and grid dependency. Four two-dimensional and one three-dimensional code originally developed by a number of research groups were considered. In general, the accuracy and computational efficieny of these TEACH type programs were improved by modifying the differencing schemes and their solvers. A brief description of each program is given.     Absolute and differential measurement of water vapor supersaturation using a commercial thin-film sensor

    We describe a technique for measuring the water vapor supersaturation of normal air over a temperature range of –40<~T<~0 °C. The measurements use an inexpensive commercial hygrometer which is based on a thin-film capacitive sensor. The time required for the sensor to reach equilibrium was found to increase exponentially with decreasing sensor temperature, exceeding 2 min for T = –30 °C; however, the water vapor sensitivity of the device remained high down to this temperature. After calibrating our measurement procedure, we found residual scatter in the data corresponding to an uncertainty in the absolute water vapor pressure of about ±15%. This scatter was due mainly to long-term drift, which appeared to be intrinsic to the capacitive thin-film sensor. The origin of this drift is not clear, but it effectively limits the applicability of this instrument for absolute measurements. We also found, however, that the high sensitivity of the thin-film sensor makes it rather well suited for differential measurements. By comparing supersaturated and saturated air at the same temperature we obtained a relative measurement uncertainty of about ±1.5%, an order of magnitude better than the absolute measurements

    Robust variable selection in partially varying coefficient single-index model

    By combining basis function approximations and smoothly clipped absolute deviation (SCAD) penalty, this paper proposes a robust variable selection procedure for a partially varying coefficient single-index model based on modal regression. The proposed procedure simultaneously selects significant variables in the parametric components and the nonparametric components. With appropriate selection of the tuning parameters, we establish the theoretical properties of our procedure, including consistency in variable selection and the oracle property in estimation. Furthermore, we also discuss the bandwidth selection and propose a modified expectation-maximization (EM)-type algorithm for the proposed estimation procedure.
