    Enhanced colloidal transport in twisted magnetic patterns

    Bilayers of two-dimensional materials twisted at specific angles can exhibit exceptional properties such as the occurrence of unconventional superconductivity in twisted graphene. We demonstrate here that novel phenomena in twisted materials emerges also in particle-based classical systems. We study the transport of magnetic colloidal particles driven by a drift force and located between two twisted periodic magnetic patterns with either hexagonal or square symmetry. The magnetic potential generated by patterns twisted at specific magic angles develops flat channels, which increase the mobility of the colloidal particles compared to that in single patterns. We characterize the effect of the temperature and that of the magnitude of the drift force on the colloidal mobility. The transport is more enhanced in square than in hexagonal twisted patterns. Our work extends twistronics to classical soft matter systems with potential applications to lab-on-a-chip devices

    Explaining Accounting Policy Practices Under IFRS: The Role of Institutional Factors

In an analysis of accounting choice across thirteen European countries, we study both overt and covert choices, aggregating them to measure their impact over income, thereby focusing on firm overall accounting strategy and not only on individual choices. Our results indicate that institutional factors significantly explain the observed heterogeneity in accounting policy practices and that firm characteristics have a smaller role in explaining them. Capital market structure and tax-alignment are particularly important factor in driving accounting practice. Contrary to the recent emphasis on enforcement as a key institutional factor, our evidence indicates it is a second order factor, when controlling for other institutional factors.     Evidence of jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus-induced pulmonary adenocarcinoma in Ouled Djellal breed sheep in Algeria

    We report the occurrence of lung cancer in a six months old lamb of Ouled Djellal breed from Algeria. The main clinical sign was a considerable amount of whitish foamy fluid discharge from the nostrils when the animal head was lowered and the rear end was lifted. The postmortem examination revealed the presence of enlarged, heavy and edematous lungs with diffuse or foci areas, reddish or white-gray in color. The gross and histological lesions of the lungs were compatible with pulmonary adenocarcinoma. Lung adenocarcinoma in sheep is caused by jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus (JSRV) and originated from differentiated alveolar type II cells and non-ciliated bronchiolar epithelial Clara cells. We evidenced the expression of the oncogenic JSRV by immunostaining of lung slides with specific antibodies against the JSRV envelope. The viral proteins were expressed only in the tumor cells from the affected areas. As already described in other countries, JSRV-induced lung adenocarcinoma is present in the sheep population in Algeria. (C) 2020 Urmia University. All rights reserved

    Quantitative Thermal Testing Profiles As A Predictor Of Treatment Response To Topical Capsaicin In Patients With Localized Neuropathic Pain

    There are no reliable predictors of response to treatment with capsaicin. Given that capsaicin application causes heat sensation, differences in quantitative thermal testing (QTT) profiles may predict treatment response. The aim of this study was to determine whether different QTT profiles could predict treatment outcomes in patients with localized peripheral neuropathic pain (PeLNP). We obtained from medical records QTT results and treatment outcomes of 55 patients treated between 2010 and 2013. Warm sensation threshold (WST) and heat pain threshold (HPT) values were assessed at baseline at the treatment site and in the asymptomatic, contralateral area. Responders were defined as those who achieved a > 30% decrease in pain lasting > 30 days. Two distinct groups were identified based on differences in QTT profiles. Most patients (27/31; 87.1%) with a homogenous profile were nonresponders. By contrast, more than half of the patients (13/24, 54.2%) with a nonhomogenous profile were responders (p = 0.0028). A nonhomogenous QTT profile appears to be predictive of response to capsaicin. We hypothesize patients with a partial loss of cutaneous nerve fibers or receptors are more likely to respond. By contrast, when severe nerve damage or normal cutaneous sensations are present, the pain is likely due to central sensitization and thus not responsive to capsaicin. Prospective studies with larger patient samples are needed to confirm this hypothesis

    Multiline operation from a single plasmon-assisted laser

    The demonstration of plasmon-assisted lasing by associating optical gain media with plasmonic nanostructures has led to a new generation of nanophotonic devices with unprecedented performances. However, despite the variety of designs demonstrated so far, the operation of these systems is in most cases limited to a single output wavelength, and some reports on multiline emission refer to mixing single nanolasers with the subsequent limitation in compactness. Here, we show multiline operation from a single plasmon-assisted nonlinear solid-state laser on which a linear chain of Ag nanoparticles is deposited. The system provides lasing at 1.08 μm, which is self-converted to the visible range through different parametric frequency-mixing processes generated at metal-dielectric interfaces. Near infrared and simultaneously green and tunable blue radiation with a subwavelength confinement in the direction perpendicular to the nanoparticle chain, are obtained at room temperature in CW regime.
