Concurrent magneto-optical imaging and magneto-transport readout of electrical switching of insulating antiferromagnetic thin films
We demonstrate stable and reversible current induced switching of large-area
() antiferromagnetic domains in NiO/Pt by performing concurrent
transport and magneto-optical imaging measurements in an adapted Kerr
microscope. By correlating the magnetic images of the antiferromagnetic domain
changes and magneto-transport signal response in these current-induced
switching experiments, we disentangle magnetic and non-magnetic contributions
to the transport signal. Our table-top approach establishes a robust procedure
to subtract the non-magnetic contributions in the transport signal and extract
the spin-Hall magnetoresistance response associated with the switching of the
antiferromagnetic domains enabling one to deduce details of the

Room temperature spin filtering in epitaxial cobalt-ferrite tunnel barriers
We report direct experimental evidence of room temperature spin filtering in
magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) containing CoFe2O4 tunnel barriers via
tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) measurements.
Pt(111)/CoFe2O4(111)/gamma-Al2O3(111)/Co(0001) fully epitaxial MTJs were grown
in order to obtain a high quality system, capable of functioning at room
temperature. Spin polarized transport measurements reveal significant TMR
values of -18% at 2 K and -3% at 290 K. In addition, the TMR ratio follows a
unique bias voltage dependence that has been theoretically predicted to be the
signature of spin filtering in MTJs containing magnetic barriers. CoFe2O4
tunnel barriers therefore provide a model system to investigate spin filtering
in a wide range of temperatures.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
Starburst radio galaxies: general properties, evolutionary histories and triggering
In this paper we discuss the results of a programme of spectral synthesis
modelling of a sample of starburst radio galaxies in the context of scenarios
for the triggering of the activity and the evolution of the host galaxies. The
starburst radio galaxies -- comprising ~15 - 25% of all powerful extragalactic
radio sources -- frequently show disturbed morphologies at optical wavelengths,
and unusual radio structures, although their stellar masses are typical of
radio galaxies as a class. In terms of the characteristic ages of their young
stellar populations (YSP), the objects can be divided into two groups: those
with YSP ages t_ysp < 0.1 Gyr, in which the radio source has been triggered
quasi-simultaneously with the main starburst episode, and those with older YSP
in which the radio source has been triggered or re-triggered a significant
period after the starburst episode. Combining the information on the YSP with
that on the optical morphologies of the host galaxies, we deduce that the
majority of the starburst radio galaxies have been triggered in galaxy mergers
in which at least one of the galaxies is gas rich. However, the triggering (or
re-triggering) of the radio jets can occur immediately before, around, or a
significant period after the final coalescence of the merging nuclei,
reflecting the complex gas infall histories of the merger events. Overall, our
results provide further evidence that powerful radio jet activity can be
triggered via a variety of mechanisms, including different evolutionary stages
of major galaxy mergers; clearly radio-loud AGN activity is not solely

Third-order optical autocorrelator for time-domain operation at telecommunication wavelengths
We report on amorphous organic thin films that exhibit efficient third-harmonic generation at telecommunication wavelengths. At 1550 nm, micrometer-thick samples generate up to 17 µW of green light with input power of 250 mW delivered by an optical parametric oscillator. This high conversion efficiency is achieved without phase matching or cascading of quadratic nonlinear effects. With these films, we demonstrate a low-cost, sensitive third-order autocorrelator that can be used in the time-frequency domain
Bulge RR Lyrae stars in the VVV tile
The VISTA Variables in the V\'ia L\'actea (VVV) Survey is one of the six ESO
public surveys currently ongoing at the VISTA telescope on Cerro Paranal,
Chile. VVV uses near-IR () filters that at present provide
photometry to a depth of mag in up to 36 epochs spanning
over four years, and aim at discovering more than 10 variable sources as
well as trace the structure of the Galactic bulge and part of the southern
disk. A variability search was performed to find RR Lyrae variable stars. The
low stellar density of the VVV tile , which is centered at
() (), makes it suitable to search for
variable stars. Previous studies have identified some RR Lyrae stars using
optical bands that served to test our search procedure. The main goal is to
measure the reddening, interstellar extinction, and distances of the RR Lyrae
stars and to study their distribution on the Milky Way bulge. A total of 1.5 sq
deg were analyzed, and we found 39 RR Lyrae stars, 27 of which belong to the
ab-type and 12 to the c-type. Our analysis recovers all the previously
identified RR Lyrae variables in the field and discovers 29 new RR Lyrae stars.
The reddening and extinction toward all the RRab stars in this tile were
derived, and distance estimations were obtained through the period--luminosity
relation. Despite the limited amount of RR Lyrae stars studied, our results are
consistent with a spheroidal or central distribution around and

In a world characterised by distorted information, Management Consulting is one of the fastest growing activities that has been questioned since its first appearance. Doubts have been floating around the limits of the industry, the role and utility of its practitioners and the consequent implicit value-added to the clients’ firms. As such the main objective of this research is to investigate the business models of consulting companies to understand the way they operate and how they contribute to attain a sustainable competitive advantage in the industries where they are present. This investigation was done by conducting interviews in 2015 and collecting personal testimonies through from top consultants of eight consulting firms. Digital Availability of Product Information for Collaborative Engineering of Spacecraft
In this paper, we introduce a system to collect product information from
manufacturers and make it available in tools that are used for concurrent
design of spacecraft. The planning of a spacecraft needs experts from different
disciplines, like propulsion, power, and thermal. Since these different
disciplines rely on each other there is a high need for communication between
them, which is often realized by a Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE)
process and corresponding tools. We show by comparison that the product
information provided by manufacturers often does not match the information
needed by MBSE tools on a syntactic or semantic level. The information from
manufacturers is also currently not available in machine-readable formats.
Afterwards, we present a prototype of a system that makes product information
from manufacturers directly available in MBSE tools, in a machine-readable way.Comment: accepted at CDVE201
