Dynamical instabilities of Bose-Einstein condensates at the band-edge in one-dimensional optical lattices
We report on experiments that demonstrate dynamical instability in a
Bose-Einstein condensate at the band-edge of a one-dimensional optical lattice.
The instability manifests as rapid depletion of the condensate and conversion
to a thermal cloud. We consider the collisional processes that can occur in
such a system, and perform numerical modeling of the experiments using both a
mean-field and beyond mean-field approach. We compare our numerical results to
the experimental data, and find that the Gross-Pitaevskii equation is not able
to describe this experiment. Our beyond mean-field approach, known as the
truncated Wigner method, allows us to make quantitative predictions for the
processes of parametric growth and thermalization that are observed in the
laboratory, and we find good agreement with the experimental results.Comment: v2: Added several reference
ETS1 is a genome-wide effector of RAS/ERK signaling in epithelial cells
The RAS/ERK pathway is commonly activated in carcinomas and promotes oncogenesis by altering transcriptional programs. However, the array of cis-regulatory elements and trans-acting factors that mediate these transcriptional changes is still unclear. Our genome-wide analysis determined that a sequence consisting of neighboring ETS and AP-1 transcription factor binding sites is enriched near cell migration genes activated by RAS/ERK signaling in epithelial cells. In vivo screening of candidate ETS proteins revealed that ETS1 is specifically required for migration of RAS/ERK activated cells. Furthermore, both migration and transcriptional activation through ETS/AP-1 required ERK phosphorylation of ETS1. Genome-wide mapping of multiple ETS proteins demonstrated that ETS1 binds specifically to enhancer ETS/AP-1 sequences. ETS1 occupancy, and its role in cell migration, was conserved in epithelial cells derived from multiple tissues, consistent with a chromatin organization common to epithelial cell lines. Genome-wide expression analysis showed that ETS1 was required for activation of RAS-regulated cell migration genes, but also identified a surprising role for ETS1 in the repression of genes such as DUSP4, DUSP6 and SPRY4 that provide negative feedback to the RAS/ERK pathway. Consistently, ETS1 was required for robust RAS/ERK pathway activation. Therefore, ETS1 has dual roles in mediating epithelial-specific RAS/ERK transcriptional functions
Extracellular Signal-Regulated Kinase Signaling Regulates the Opposing Roles of JUN Family Transcription Factors at ETS/AP-1 Sites and in Cell Migration
JUN transcription factors bind DNA as part of the AP-1 complex, regulate many cellular processes, and play a key role in oncogenesis. The three JUN proteins (c-JUN, JUNB, and JUND) can have both redundant and unique functions depending on the biological phenotype and cell type assayed. Mechanisms that allow this dynamic switching between overlapping and distinct functions are unclear. Here we demonstrate that JUND has a role in prostate cell migration that is the opposite of c-JUN's and JUNB's. RNA sequencing reveals that opposing regulation by c-JUN and JUND defines a subset of AP-1 target genes with cell migration roles. cis-regulatory elements for only this subset of targets were enriched for ETS factor binding, indicating a specificity mechanism. Interestingly, the function of c-JUN and JUND in prostate cell migration switched when we compared cells with an inactive versus an active RAS/extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling pathway. We show that this switch is due to phosphorylation and activation of JUND by ERK. Thus, the ETS/AP-1 sequence defines a unique gene expression program regulated by the relative levels of JUN proteins and RAS/ERK signaling. This work provides a rationale for how transcription factors can have distinct roles depending on the signaling status and the biological function in question

Based on chromosomal location data of genes encoding 28 biochemical systems in allohexaploid wheat,Triticum aestivum L. (genomes AABBDD), it is concluded that the proportions of systems controlled by triplicate, duplicate, and single loci are 57%, 25%, and 18% respectively
Methanol Masers as Tracers of Circumstellar Disks
We show that in many methanol maser sources the masers are located in lines,
with a velocity gradient along them which suggests that the masers are situated
in edge-on circumstellar, or protoplanetary, disks. We present VLBI
observations of the methanol maser source G309.92+0.48, in the 12.2 GHz
transition, which confirm previous observations that the masers in this source
lie along a line. We show that such sources are not only linear in space but,
in many cases, also have a linear velocity gradient. We then model these and
other data in both the 6.7 GHz and the 12.2 GHz transition from a number of
star formation regions, and show that the observed spatial and velocity
distribution of methanol masers, and the derived Keplerian masses, are
consistent with a circumstellar disk rotating around an OB star. We consider
this and other hypotheses, and conclude that about half of these methanol
masers are probably located in edge-on circumstellar disks around young stars.
This is of particular significance for studies of circumstellar disks because

Finite Temperature Models of Bose-Einstein Condensation
The theoretical description of trapped weakly-interacting Bose-Einstein
condensates is characterized by a large number of seemingly very different
approaches which have been developed over the course of time by researchers
with very distinct backgrounds. Newcomers to this field, experimentalists and
young researchers all face a considerable challenge in navigating through the
`maze' of abundant theoretical models, and simple correspondences between
existing approaches are not always very transparent. This Tutorial provides a
generic introduction to such theories, in an attempt to single out common
features and deficiencies of certain `classes of approaches' identified by
their physical content, rather than their particular mathematical
implementation.
This Tutorial is structured in a manner accessible to a non-specialist with a
good working knowledge of quantum mechanics. Although some familiarity with
concepts of quantum field theory would be an advantage, key notions such as the
occupation number representation of second quantization are nonetheless briefly
reviewed. Following a general introduction, the complexity of models is
gradually built up, starting from the basic zero-temperature formalism of the
Gross-Pitaevskii equation. This structure enables readers to probe different
levels of theoretical developments (mean-field, number-conserving and
stochastic) according to their particular needs. In addition to its `training
element', we hope that this Tutorial will prove useful to active researchers in
this field, both in terms of the correspondences made between different
theoretical models, and as a source of reference for existing and developing

Interoception and Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia in Gambling Disorder

considered i) gamblers’ ability to detect internal physiological signals, or ii) markers of parasympathetic
functioning. The present study measured interoception in individuals with gambling disorder, using selfreport measures and a heart beat counting task administered at rest. Resting state Respiratory Sinus
Arrhythmia (RSA), an index of heart rate variability, was measured as a proxy for parasympathetic
control and emotional regulation capacity. In a case-control design, 50 individuals with gambling
disorder were compared against 35 controls without gambling problems. Participants completed two
self-report measures of bodily awareness and a behavioural test of heart beat counting. A resting state
electrocardiogram (five minutes) was used to calculate RSA. There were no significant differences on
the self-report or behavioral interoception probes. The group with gambling disorder displayed
significantly reduced RSA, which at face value is consistent with reduced parasympathetic control.
However, the group difference in RSA did not survive controlling for age and smoking status, as
established predictors of heart rate variability. Our findings do not support any changes in interoceptive
processing in people with gambling disorder, at least under resting conditions. Our observation that
group differences in RSA are partly explained by smoking behavior highlights the importance of
controlling for nicotine use in future research characterizing physiological functioning and emotional

Hybrid Newton-type method for a class of semismooth equations
In this paper, we present a hybrid method for the solution of a class of composite semismooth equations encountered frequently in applications. The method is obtained by combining a generalized finite-difference Newton method to an inexpensive direct search method. We prove that, under standard assumptions, the method is globally convergent with a local rate of convergence which is superlinear or quadratic. We report also several numerical results obtained applying the method to suitable reformulations of well-known nonlinear complementarity problem
