    Lick Spectral Indices for Super Metal-rich Stars

    The Lick Fe5015, Fe5270, Fe5335, Mgb and Mg2 indices are presented for 139 candidate SMR stars of different luminosity class studied in Malagnini et al. (2000). Evidence is found for a standard (i.e. [Mg/Fe]~0) Mg vs. Fe relative abundance. Both the Worthey et al. (1994) and Buzzoni et al. (1992, 1994) fitting functions are found to suitably match the data at super-solar metallicity regimes.     Uncertainties of Synthetic Integrated Colors as Age Indicators

    We investigate the uncertainties in the synthetic integrated colors of simple stellar populations. Three types of uncertainties are from the stellar models, the population synthesis techniques, and from the spectral libraries. Despite some skepticism, synthetic colors appear to be reliable age indicators when used for select age ranges. Rest-frame optical colors are good age indicators at ages 2 -- 7Gyr. At ages sufficiently large to produce hot HB stars, the UV-to-optical colors provide an alternative means for measuring ages. This UV technique may break the age-metallicity degeneracy because it separates old populations from young ones even in the lack of metallicity information. One can use such techniques on extragalactic globular clusters and perhaps even for high redshift galaxies that are passively evolving to study galaxy evolution history.Comment: 38 pages, 21 figures, LaTex, 2003, ApJ, 582 (Jan 1), in pres

    Synthetic Lick Indices and Detection of α-enhanced Stars. II. F, G, and K Stars in the –1.0 < [Fe/H] < +0.50 Range

    We present an analysis of 402 F, G, and K solar neighborhood stars, with accurate estimates of [Fe/H] in the range -1.0 to +0.5 dex, aimed at the detection of α-enhanced stars and at the investigation of their kinematical properties. The analysis is based on the comparison of 571 sets of spectral indices in the Lick/IDS system, coming from four different observational data sets, with synthetic indices computed with solar-scaled abundances and with α-element enhancement. We use selected combinations of indices to single out α-enhanced stars without requiring previous knowledge of their main atmospheric parameters. By applying this approach to the total data set, we obtain a list of 60 bona fide α-enhanced stars and of 146 stars with solar-scaled abundances. The properties of the detected α-enhanced and solar-scaled abundance stars with respect to their [Fe/H] values and kinematics are presented. A clear kinematic distinction between solar-scaled and α-enhanced stars was found, although a one-to-one correspondence to "thin disk" and "thick disk" components cannot be supported with the present data

    Barium lines in high-quality spectra of two metal-poor giants in the Galactic halo

    Context. Theoretical results showed the possibility that neutron capture elements were produced in the early Universe by two different sources: a frequent s-process source hosted by rotating massive stars, and a rare r-process source hosted most likely by neutron star mergers. The two sources produce barium with different isotopic compositions. Aims. We aim to investigate the lines of barium in two halo stars, HD 6268 and HD 4306. The spectra present an exquisite quality, both in terms of resolution (R > 100 000) and signal-to-noise (~400). Due to hyperfine splitting (hfs) effects, barium lines are expected to show slightly different profiles depending on the barium isotopic fraction. Methods. We applied a standard local thermodynamic equilibrium synthesis of the barium lines. We compared the synthetic results assuming an s-process isotopic pattern or an r-process isotopic pattern for the two barium lines for each star that exhibited hfs. We also applied a methodology, less dependent on the accuracy of the theoretical Ba hfs structure, that transforms the lines of HD 4306 into those we would observe if its atmospheric parameter values (i.e. Teff, log g, micro- and macro-turbulence, V sin i, and Ba abundance) were the same as those of HD 6268. Results. With both methods, our results show that the barium lines with hfs effects of HD 4306 are in agreement with an s-process composition and the lines in HD 6268 have a different profile, which is most likely linked to the presence of an r-process isotopic pattern. Conclusions. Two lines of barium of HD 6268 and HD 4306 seem to confirm the theoretical expectation that both r-process events and also s-process contribution by rotating massive stars have polluted the ancient halo of our Galaxy

    Synthetic Mid-UV Spectroscopic Indices of Stars

    Using the UVBLUE library of synthetic stellar spectra we have computed a set of mid-UV line and continuum spectroscopic indices. We explore their behavior in terms of the leading stellar parameters [T_eff,log(g)]. The overall result is that synthetic indices follow the general trends depicted by those computed from empirical databases. Separately we also examine the index sensitivity to changes in chemical composition, an analysis only feasible under a theoretical approach. In this respect, lines indices FeI3000, BL3096 and MgI2852 and the continuum index 2828/2921 are the least sensitive features, an important characteristic to be taken into account for the analyses of integrated spectra of stellar systems. We also quantify the effects of instrumental resolution on the indices and find that indices display variations up to 0.1 mag in the resolution interval between 6-10 angstrom of FWHM. We discuss the extent to which synthetic indices are compatible with indices measured in spectra collected by the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE). Five line and continuum indices (FeI3000, 2110/2570, 2828/2921, S2850, and S2850L) display a remarkable good correlation with observations. The rest of the indices are either underestimated or overestimated, however, two of them, MgWide and BL3096, display only marginal discrepancies. For 11 indices we give the coefficients to convert synthetic indices to the IUE system. This work represents the first attempt to synthesize mid-UV indices from high resolution theoretical spectra and foresees important applications for the study of the ultraviolet morphology of old stellar aggregates.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures; accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa

    The UV Upturn in Elliptical Galaxies as an Age Indicator

    We show that the UV flux of old stellar systems can tell us about their ages. Two independent populations synthesis groups that have had wildly different views have here worked together and generated two solutions that can be easily tested using space telescopes.     Non-LTE Model Atmospheres for Late-Type Stars II. Restricted NLTE Calculations for a Solar-Like Atmosphere

    We test our knowledge of the atomic opacity in the solar UV spectrum. Using the atomic data compiled in Paper I from modern, publicly available, databases, we perform calculations that are confronted with space-based observations of the Sun. At wavelengths longer than about 260 nm, LTE modeling can reproduce quite closely the observed fluxes; uncertainties in the atomic line data account fully for the differences between calculated and observed fluxes. At shorter wavelengths, departures from LTE appear to be important, as our LTE and restricted NLTE calculations differ. Analysis of visible-near infrared Na I and O I lines, two species that produce a negligible absorption in the UV, shows that observed departures from LTE for theses species can be reproduced very accurately with restricted (fixed atmospheric structure) NLTE calculations.Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, to appear in Ap
