    Gravity in the Randall-Sundrum Brane World

    We discuss the weak gravitational field created by isolated matter sources in the Randall-Sundrum brane-world. In the case of two branes of opposite tension, linearized Brans-Dicke (BD) gravity is recovered on either wall, with different BD parameters. On the wall with positive tension the BD parameter is larger than 3000 provided that the separation between walls is larger than 4 times the AdS radius. For the wall of negative tension, the BD parameter is always negative but greater than -3/2. In either case, shadow matter from the other wall gravitates upon us. For equal Newtonian mass, light deflection from shadow matter is 25 % weaker than from ordinary matter. Hence, the effective mass of a clustered object containing shadow dark matter would be underestimated if naively measured through its lensing effect. For the case of a single wall of positive tension, Einstein gravity is recovered on the wall to leading order, and if the source is stationary the field stays localized near the wall. We calculate the leading Kaluza-Klein corrections to the linearized gravitational field of a non-relativistic spherical object and find that the metric is different from the Schwarzschild solution at large distances. We believe that our linearized solution corresponds to the field far from the horizon after gravitational collapse of matter on the brane.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure.     Analysis and test of superplastically formed titanium hat-stiffened panels under compression

    Four hat-stiffened titanium panels with two different stiffener configurations were fabricated by superplastic forming/weld brazing and tested under a moderately heavy compressive load. The panels had the same overall dimensions but differed in the shape of the hat-stiffener webs; three panels had stiffeners with flat webs and the other panel had stiffeners with beaded webs. Analysis indicated that the local buckling strain of the flat stiffener web was considerably lower than the general panel buckling strain or cap buckling strain. The analysis also showed that beading the webs of the hat stiffeners removed them as the critical element for local buckling and improved the buckling strain of the panels. The analytical extensional stiffness and failure loads compared very well with experimental results

    Wind erosion in semiarid landscapes: Predictive models and remote sensing methods for the influence of vegetation

    Wind erosion in semi-arid regions is a significant problem for which the sheltering effect of rangeland vegetation is poorly understood. Individual plants may be considered as porous roughness elements which absorb or redistribute the wind's momentum. The saltation threshold is the minimum wind velocity at which soil movement begins. The dependence of the saltation threshold on geometrical parameters of a uniform roughness array was studied in a wind tunnel. Both solid and porous elements were used to determine relationships between canopy structure and the threshold velocity for soil transport. The development of a predictive relation for the influence of vegetation canopy structure on wind erosion of soil is discussed

    An improved optical gyroscope is provided, of the type that passes two light components in opposite directions through an optic fiber coil, and which adds a small variable frequency to one of the light components to cancel the phase shift due to rotation of the coil. The amount of coil rotation from an initial orientation, is accurately determined by combining the two light components, one of which has a slightly increased frequency, to develop beats that each represent a predetermined angle of rotation. The direction of rotation is obtained by combining the two light components on a photodetector, intermittently phase shifting a single light component by 90 deg and comparing the direction of change of photodetector output (+ or -) caused by the 90 deg shift, with the slope (+ or -) of the photodetector output at about the same time, when there is a 90 deg shift

    HRTEM study of a new non-stoichiometric BaTiO(3-δ) structure

    BaTiO3-based multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) with Ni internal electrodes are co-fired in reducing atmospheres to avoid oxidation of the electrode. Although dielectric materials are doped by acceptor, donor and amphoteric dopants to minimize the oxygen vacancy content, there is still a large concentration of oxygen vacancies that are accommodated in the BaTiO3 active layers. In general, ABO3 perovskites demonstrates a strong ability to accommodate the oxygen vacancies and maintain a regular pseudo-cubic structure. Oxygen deficient barium titanate can be transformed to a hexagonal polymorph (h-BT) at high temperatures1,2. In this paper, we report the new modulated and long range ordered structures of non-stoichiometric BaTiO3-δ that are observed in the electrically degraded Ni-BaTiO3 MLCCs at low temperature
