Action for Rehabilitation from Neurological Injury (ARNI): A pragmatic study of functional training for stroke survivors

Isometric strength of the knee musculature, Centre-Of-Pressure (COP) based measures of balance, Berg Balance Scale (BBS), 10 m walk test, and the Subjective Index of Physical and Social Out come (SIPSO), were recorded at baseline, post-intervention, and after twelve weeks (follow-up). Exercise instructors delivered training once a week in a group format at a community centre. Significant improvement was noted in the BBS (p < 0.002), and 10 m walk speed (p = 0.03) post intervention which remained unchanged at follow-up. Total SIPSO score improved significantly post-intervention (p = 0.044). No other significant differences and no adverse effects were observed. It is possible that functional training provided more opportunity for the improvement of dynamic aspects of balance control that could be captured by the BBS but not with the traditional measures of balance using COP data. Results also suggest positive effects on the level of participation, and lack of association between measures of impairment and activity. Community based functional training could be effective and used to extend access to rehabilitation services beyond the acute and sub-acute stages after stroke.London Borough of Hillingdo
Comment on "Self-Purification in Semiconductor Nanocrystals"
In a recent Letter [PRL 96, 226802 (2006)], Dalpian and Chelikowsky claimed
that formation energies of Mn impurities in CdSe nanocrystals increase as the
size of the nanocrystal decreases, and argued that this size dependence leads
to "self-purification" of small nanocrystals. They presented
density-functional-theory (DFT) calculations showing a strong size dependence
for Mn impurity formation energies, and proposed a general explanation. In this
Comment we show that several different DFT codes, pseudopotentials, and
exchange-correlation functionals give a markedly different result: We find no
such size dependence. More generally, we argue that formation energies are not
relevant to substitutional doping in most colloidally grown nanocrystals.Comment: 1 page, 1 figur
Effective speed of sound in phononic crystals
A new formula for the effective quasistatic speed of sound in 2D and 3D
periodic materials is reported. The approach uses a monodromy-matrix operator
to enable direct integration in one of the coordinates and exponentially fast
convergence in others. As a result, the solution for has a more closed form
than previous formulas. It significantly improves the efficiency and accuracy
of evaluating for high-contrast composites as demonstrated by a 2D example

Solar Irradiance Variability is Caused by the Magnetic Activity on the Solar Surface
The variation in the radiative output of the Sun, described in terms of solar
irradiance, is important to climatology. A common assumption is that solar
irradiance variability is driven by its surface magnetism. Verifying this
assumption has, however, been hampered by the fact that models of solar
irradiance variability based on solar surface magnetism have to be calibrated
to observed variability. Making use of realistic three-dimensional
magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the solar atmosphere and state-of-the-art
solar magnetograms from the Solar Dynamics Observatory, we present a model of
total solar irradiance (TSI) that does not require any such calibration. In
doing so, the modeled irradiance variability is entirely independent of the
observational record. (The absolute level is calibrated to the TSI record from
the Total Irradiance Monitor.) The model replicates 95% of the observed
variability between April 2010 and July 2016, leaving little scope for
alternative drivers of solar irradiance variability at least over the time

A Survey of the Galactic Plane for 6.7-GHz Methanol Masers I: l = 325.0 - 335.0 ; b = -0.53 - 0.53
We report the results of the first complete survey of an area of the Galactic
Plane for maser emission from the 6.7-GHz transition of methanol. The survey
covers a 10.6-square-degree region of the Galactic Plane in the longitude range
325-335 degrees and latitude range -0.53-0.53 degrees. The survey is sensitive
to masers with a peak flux density greater than approximately 2.6 Jy. The
weakest maser detected has a peak flux density of 2.3 Jy and the strongest a
peak flux density of 425 Jy. We detected a total of 50 distinct masers, 26 of
which are new detections. We show that many 6.7-GHz methanol masers are not
associated with IRAS sources, and that some are associated with sources that
have colours differing from those of a typical ultra-compact HII region
(UCHII). We estimate that the number of UCHII regions in the Galaxy is
significantly more than suggested by IRAS-based estimates, possibly by more

The first VLBI image of an Infrared-Faint Radio Source
Context: To investigate the joint evolution of active galactic nuclei and
star formation in the Universe. Aims: In the 1.4 GHz survey with the Australia
Telescope Compact Array of the Chandra Deep Field South and the European Large
Area ISO Survey - S1 we have identified a class of objects which are strong in
the radio but have no detectable infrared and optical counterparts. This class
has been called Infrared-Faint Radio Sources, or IFRS. 53 sources out of 2002
have been classified as IFRS. It is not known what these objects are. Methods:
To address the many possible explanations as to what the nature of these
objects is we have observed four sources with the Australian Long Baseline
Array. Results: We have detected and imaged one of the four sources observed.
Assuming that the source is at a high redshift, we find its properties in
agreement with properties of Compact Steep Spectrum sources. However, due to
the lack of optical and infrared data the constraints are not particularly

Maine Distributed Solar Valuation Study
During its 2014 session, the Maine Legislature enacted an Act to Support Solar Energy Development in Maine. P.L Chapter 562 (April 24, 2014) (codified at 35‐A M.R.S. §§ 3471‐3473) (“Act”). Section 1 of the Act contains the Legislative finding that it is in the public interest is to develop renewable energy resources, including solar energy, in a manner that protects and improves the health and well‐being of the citizens and natural environment of the State while also providing economic benefits to communities, ratepayers and the overall economy of the State.
Section 2 of the Act requires the Public Utilities Commission (Commission) to determine the value of distributed solar energy generation in the State, evaluate implementation options, and to deliver a report to the Legislature. To support this work, the Commission engaged a project team comprising Clean Power Research (Napa, California), Sustainable Energy Advantage (Framingham, Massachusetts), Pace Energy and Climate Center at the Pace Law School (White Plains, New York), and Dr. Richard Perez (Albany, New York).
Under the project, the team developed the methodology under a Commission‐run stakeholder review process, conducted a valuation on distributed solar for three utility territories, and developed a summary of implementation options for increasing deployment of distributed solar generation in the State.

Health professionals' perceptions of cultural influences on stroke experiences and rehabilitation in Kuwait

Copyright @ 2012 Informa UK Ltd.Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the perceptions of health professionals who treat stroke patients in Kuwait regarding cultural influences on the experience of stroke and rehabilitation in Kuwait. Health professionals interviewed were from a variety of cultural backgrounds thus providing an opportunity to investigate how they perceived the influence of culture on stroke recovery and rehabilitation in Kuwait. Method: Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 12 health professionals with current/recent stroke rehabilitation experience in Kuwait, followed by thematic analysis of the verbatim transcripts. Results: The health professionals identified several features of the Kuwaiti culture that they believed affected the experiences of stroke patients. These were religious beliefs, family involvement, limited education and public information about stroke, prevailing negative attitudes toward stroke, access to finances for private treatment, social stigma and the public invisibility of disabled people, difficulties identifying meaningful goals for rehabilitation, and an acceptance of dependency linked with the widespread presence of maids and other paid assistants in most Kuwaiti homes. Conclusion: To offer culturally sensitive care, these issues should be taken into account during the rehabilitation of Kuwaiti stroke patients in their home country and elsewhere
