Binding of Basic Dyes by the Algae, Chara aspera
Non-living biomass of the algae Chara aspera is capable of binding two basic dyes, methylene blue and basic blue 3, from aqueous solution. Factors such as dye concentration, contact time, sorbent dosage and pH of solution were
studied. Maximum sorption capacities of the algae for methylene blue and basic blue 3 are 139.4 and 17.8 mg/g, respectively, as determined from the

Molecular dynamics simulations of lead clusters
Molecular dynamics simulations of nanometer-sized lead clusters have been
performed using the Lim, Ong and Ercolessi glue potential (Surf. Sci. {\bf
269/270}, 1109 (1992)). The binding energies of clusters forming crystalline
(fcc), decahedron and icosahedron structures are compared, showing that fcc
cuboctahedra are the most energetically favoured of these polyhedral model
structures. However, simulations of the freezing of liquid droplets produced a
characteristic form of ``shaved'' icosahedron, in which atoms are absent at the
edges and apexes of the polyhedron. This arrangement is energetically favoured
for 600-4000 atom clusters. Larger clusters favour crystalline structures.
Indeed, simulated freezing of a 6525-atom liquid droplet produced an imperfect
fcc Wulff particle, containing a number of parallel stacking faults. The
effects of temperature on the preferred structure of crystalline clusters below
the melting point have been considered. The implications of these results for

Surface-reconstructed Icosahedral Structures for Lead Clusters
We describe a new family of icosahedral structures for lead clusters. In
general, structures in this family contain a Mackay icosahedral core with a
reconstructed two-shell outer-layer. This family includes the anti-Mackay
icosahedra, which have have a Mackay icosahedral core but with most of the
surface atoms in hexagonal close-packed positions. Using a many-body glue
potential for lead, we identify two icosahedral structures in this family which
have the lowest energies of any known structure in the size range from 900 to
15000 lead atoms. We show that these structures are stabilized by a feature of
the many-body glue part of the interatomic potential.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure
Mutually Penetrating Motion of Self-Organized 2D Patterns of Soliton-Like Structures
Results of numerical simulations of a recently derived most general
dissipative-dispersive PDE describing evolution of a film flowing down an
inclined plane are presented. They indicate that a novel complex type of
spatiotemporal patterns can exist for strange attractors of nonequilibrium
systems. It is suggested that real-life experiments satisfying the validity
conditions of the theory are possible: the required sufficiently viscous

Score Fusion by Maximizing the Area under the ROC Curve

aimed at improving the performance of biometric systems. This paper
proposes a novel method for optimizing the parameters of a score fusion
model based on maximizing an index related to the Area Under the ROC
Curve. This approach has the convenience that the fusion parameters are
learned without having to specify the client and impostor priors or the
costs for the different errors. Empirical results on several datasets show

Stable two-dimensional solitary pulses in linearly coupled dissipative Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equations
A two-dimensional (2D) generalization of the stabilized Kuramoto -
Sivashinsky (KS) system is presented. It is based on the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili
(KP) equation including dissipation of the generic (Newell -- Whitehead --
Segel, NWS) type and gain. The system directly applies to the description of
gravity-capillary waves on the surface of a liquid layer flowing down an
inclined plane, with a surfactant diffusing along the layer's surface.
Actually, the model is quite general, offering a simple way to stabilize
nonlinear waves in media combining the weakly-2D dispersion of the KP type with
gain and NWS dissipation. Parallel to this, another model is introduced, whose
dissipative terms are isotropic, rather than of the NWS type. Both models
include an additional linear equation of the advection-diffusion type, linearly
coupled to the main KP-NWS equation. The extra equation provides for stability
of the zero background in the system, opening a way to the existence of stable
localized pulses. The consideration is focused on the case when the dispersive
part of the system of the KP-I type, admitting the existence of 2D localized
pulses. Treating the dissipation and gain as small perturbations and making use
of the balance equation for the field momentum, we find that the equilibrium
between the gain and losses may select two 2D solitons, from their continuous
family existing in the conservative counterpart of the model (the latter family
is found in an exact analytical form). The selected soliton with the larger
amplitude is expected to be stable. Direct simulations completely corroborate

Stabilized Kuramoto-Sivashinsky system
A model consisting of a mixed Kuramoto - Sivashinsky - KdV equation, linearly
coupled to an extra linear dissipative equation, is proposed. The model applies
to the description of surface waves on multilayered liquid films. The extra
equation makes its possible to stabilize the zero solution in the model,
opening way to the existence of stable solitary pulses (SPs). Treating the
dissipation and instability-generating gain in the model as small
perturbations, we demonstrate that balance between them selects two
steady-state solitons from their continuous family existing in the absence of
the dissipation and gain. The may be stable, provided that the zero solution is
stable. The prediction is completely confirmed by direct simulations. If the
integration domain is not very large, some pulses are stable even when the zero
background is unstable. Stable bound states of two and three pulses are found

Dynamic Gaussian graphical models for modelling genomic networks
After sequencing the entire DNA for various organisms, the challenge has become understanding the functional interrelatedness of the genome. Only by understanding the pathways for various complex diseases can we begin to make sense of any type of treatment. Unfortu- nately, decyphering the genomic network structure is an enormous task. Even with a small number of genes the number of possible networks is very large. This problem becomes even more difficult, when we consider dynamical networks. We consider the problem of estimating a sparse dy- namic Gaussian graphical model with L1 penalized maximum likelihood of structured precision matrix. The structure can consist of specific time dynamics, known presence or absence of links in the graphical model or equality constraints on the parameters. The model is defined on the basis of partial correlations, which results in a specific class precision matrices. A priori L1 penalized maximum likelihood estimation in this class is extremely difficult, because of the above mentioned constraints, the computational complexity of the L1 constraint on the side of the usual positive-definite constraint. The implementation is non-trivial, but we show that the computation can be done effectively by taking advan- tage of an efficient maximum determinant algorithm developed in convex optimization
A Simple Model for Anisotropic Step Growth
We consider a simple model for the growth of isolated steps on a vicinal
crystal surface. It incorporates diffusion and drift of adatoms on the terrace,
and strong step and kink edge barriers. Using a combination of analytic methods
and Monte Carlo simulations, we study the morphology of growing steps in
detail. In particular, under typical Molecular Beam Epitaxy conditions the step
morphology is linearly unstable in the model and develops fingers separated by
deep cracks. The vertical roughness of the step grows linearly in time, while
horizontally the fingers coarsen proportional to . We develop scaling
arguments to study the saturation of the ledge morphology for a finite width

Analysis towards the current management of limited common property in Malaysia
Strata properties in Malaysia were getting popular especially in the urban areas. As the population density in urban centres are expected to grow continuously, the number of residents for strata properties are expected to rise continuously which help to promote the mix-developments to be developed under a strata scheme. However, there are some issues regarding the unfair management for the common property in mixdevelopment where certain owners have to pay the maintenance fee for common properties which are not enjoyable by them. Therefore, this paper has the objective to examine the current practice of strata management towards limited common property. The enactment of Strata Management Act 2013 and enforcement in 2015 promoted the self-governance for strata scheme in Malaysia. For the current strata property, the scheme will be managed by all strata unit owners where Strata Title Act 1985 and Strata Management Act 2013 provide the framework in establishing the Management Corporation to administer and manage the strata scheme. MC is allowed to establish Subsidiary Management Corporation (Sub-MC) to manage limited common property and the designation of limited common property for different interest of parcel proprietors especially for mixdevelopment properties. Although the frameworks and procedures to establish the subsidiary management corporation were introduced under the Circular of JUPEM in 2017, however the number of establishment for Sub-MC is still low as there is only Sub-MC in Malaysia was proposed to be formed at 1 Mont’ Kiara mixed-use stratified development. Quantitative method and descriptive analysis were used in this research. Result shows that the management body has the knowledge in forming limited common property in their strata scheme. However, the low number in forming limited common property might due to problems in the procedure. Therefore, common pool resource theory was applied to describe the benefit in forming the limited common property
