Collective spontaneous emission in a q-deformed Dicke model
The q-deformation of a single quantized radiation mode interacting with a
collection of two level atoms is introduced, analysing its effects on the
cooperative behavior of the system.Comment: 11 pages, RevTeX file, 2 figures available from authors, accepted for

Exciton-phonon scattering and photo-excitation dynamics in J-aggregate microcavities
We have developed a model accounting for the photo-excitation dynamics and
the photoluminescence of strongly coupled J-aggregate microcavities. Our model
is based on a description of the J-aggregate film as a disordered Frenkel
exciton system in which relaxation occurs due to the presence of a thermal bath
of molecular vibrations. In a strongly coupled microcavity exciton-polaritons
are formed, mixing superradiant excitons and cavity photons. The calculation of
the microcavity steady-state photoluminescence, following a CW non resonant
pumping, is carried out. The experimental photoluminescence intensity ratio
between upper and lower polariton branches is accurately reproduced. In
particular both thermal activation of the photoluminescence intensity ratio and
its Rabi splitting dependence are a consequence of the bottleneck in the
relaxation, occurring at the bottom of the excitonic reservoir. The effects due
to radiative channels of decay of excitons and to the presence of a
paritticular set of discrete optical molecular vibrations active in relaxation
processes are investigared.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
Cap rock efficiency of geothermal systems in fold-and-thrust belts: Evidence from paleo-thermal and structural analyses in Rosario de La Frontera geothermal area (NW Argentina)
Cap rock characterization of geothermal systems is often neglected despite fracturing may reduce its efficiency and favours fluid migration. We investigated the siliciclastic cap rock of Rosario de La Frontera geothermal system (NW Argentina) in order to assess its quality as a function of fracture patterns and related thermal alteration. Paleothermal investigations (XRD on fine-grained fraction of sediments, organic matter optical analysis and fluid inclusions on veins) and 1D thermal modelling allowed us to distinguish the thermal fingerprint associated to sedimentary burial from that related to fluid migration. The geothermal system is hosted in a Neogene N-S anticline dissected by high angle NNW- and ENE-striking faults. Its cap rock can be grouped into two quality categories: • rocks acting as good insulators, deformed by NNW–SSE and E–W shear fractures, NNE-SSW gypsum- and N-S-striking calcite-filled veins that developed during the initial stage of anticline growth. Maximum paleo-temperatures (< 60 °C) were experienced during deposition to folding phases.• rocks acting as bad insulators, deformed by NNW-SSE fault planes and NNW- and WNW-striking sets of fractures associated to late transpressive kinematics. Maximum paleo-temperatures higher than about 115 °C are linked to fluid migration from the reservoir to surface (with a reservoir top at maximum depths of 2.5 km) along fault damage zones. This multi-method approach turned out to be particularly useful to trace the main pathways of hot fluids and can be applied in blind geothermal systems where either subsurface data are scarce or surface thermal anomalies are lacking.Fil: Maffucci, R.. A new representation for non--local operators and path integrals
We derive an alternative representation for the relativistic non--local
kinetic energy operator and we apply it to solve the relativistic Salpeter
equation using the variational sinc collocation method. Our representation is
analytical and does not depend on an expansion in terms of local operators. We
have used the relativistic harmonic oscillator problem to test our formula and
we have found that arbitrarily precise results are obtained, simply increasing
the number of grid points. More difficult problems have also been considered,
observing in all cases the convergence of the numerical results. Using these
results we have also derived a new representation for the quantum mechanical
Green's function and for the corresponding path integral. We have tested this
representation for a free particle in a box, recovering the exact result after
taking the proper limits, and we have also found that the application of the
Feynman--Kac formula to our Green's function yields the correct ground state
energy. Our path integral representation allows to treat hamiltonians
containing non--local operators and it could provide to the community a new
tool to deal with such class of problems.Comment: 9 pages ; 1 figure ; refs added ; title modifie
Optimal estimation of quantum observables
We consider the problem of estimating the ensemble average of an observable
on an ensemble of equally prepared identical quantum systems. We show that,
among all kinds of measurements performed jointly on the copies, the optimal
unbiased estimation is achieved by the usual procedure that consists in
performing independent measurements of the observable on each system and
averaging the measurement outcomes.Comment: Submitted to J. Math Phy
Correlation function and generalized master equation of arbitrary age
We study a two-state statistical process with a non-Poisson distribution of
sojourn times. In accordance with earlier work, we find that this process is
characterized by aging and we study three different ways to define the
correlation function of arbitrary age of the corresponding dichotomous
fluctuation based respectively on the Generalized Master Equation formalism, on
a Liouville-like approach and on a trajectory perspective.Comment: 11 pages, 1figur
Spectroscopy of drums and quantum billiards: perturbative and non-perturbative results
We develop powerful numerical and analytical techniques for the solution of
the Helmholtz equation on general domains. We prove two theorems: the first
theorem provides an exact formula for the ground state of an arbirtrary
membrane, while the second theorem generalizes this result to any excited state
of the membrane. We also develop a systematic perturbative scheme which can be
used to study the small deformations of a membrane of circular or square
shapes. We discuss several applications, obtaining numerical and analytical
results.Comment: 29 pages, 12 figures, 7 tabl
Testosterone insulin-like effects: an in vitro study on the short-term metabolic effects of testosterone in human skeletal muscle cells
Testosterone by promoting different metabolic pathways contributes to short-term homeostasis of skeletal muscle, the largest insulin-sensitive tissue and the primary site for insulin-stimulated glucose utilization. Despite evidences indicate a close relationship between testosterone and glucose metabolism, the molecular mechanisms responsible for a possible testosterone-mediated insulin-like effects on skeletal muscle are still unknown
Experimental quantum cryptography scheme based on orthogonal states
Since, in general, non-orthogonal states cannot be cloned, any eavesdropping
attempt in a Quantum Communication scheme using non-orthogonal states as
carriers of information introduces some errors in the transmission, leading to
the possibility of detecting the spy. Usually, orthogonal states are not used
in Quantum Cryptography schemes since they can be faithfully cloned without
altering the transmitted data. Nevertheless, L. Goldberg and L. Vaidman [\prl
75 (1995) 1239] proposed a protocol in which, even if the data exchange is
realized using two orthogonal states, any attempt to eavesdrop is detectable by
the legal users. In this scheme the orthogonal states are superpositions of two
localized wave packets travelling along separate channels. Here we present an
experiment realizing this scheme
