    Theoretical analysis of dynamic chemical imaging with lasers using high-order harmonic generation

    We report theoretical investigations of the tomographic procedure suggested by Itatani {\it et al.} [Nature, {\bf 432} 867 (2004)] for reconstructing highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMO) using high-order harmonic generation (HHG). Using the limited range of harmonics from the plateau region, we found that under the most favorable assumptions, it is still very difficult to obtain accurate HOMO wavefunction, but the symmetry of the HOMO and the internuclear separation between the atoms can be accurately extracted, especially when lasers of longer wavelengths are used to generate the HHG. We also considered the possible removal or relaxation of the approximations used in the tomographic method in actual applications. We suggest that for chemical imaging, in the future it is better to use an iterative method to locate the positions of atoms in the molecule such that the resulting HHG best fits the macroscopic HHG data, rather than by the tomographic method.Comment: 13 pages, 14 figure

    Theory for high spin systems with orbital degeneracy

    High-spin systems with orbital degeneracy are studied in the large spin limit. In the absence of Hund's coupling, the classical spin model is mapped onto disconnected orbital systems with spins up and down, respectively. The ground state of the isotropic model is an orbital valence bond state where each bond is an orbital singlet with parallel spins, and neighbouring bonds interact antiferromagnetically.     NOTATIONAL ANALYSIS OF INTERNATIONAL BADMINTON COMPETITIONS

    Notational analysis of competitions is a widely used method for observing the playing patterns of many sports. An experiment was carried out to determine the playing tactics adopted by athletes in international badminton competitions. A total of 10 major competitions were recorded and the data was processed using a generic notational analysis software. The types of techniques used, the success and failure rates of the various shots were computed and compared using statistical methods of analysis. The results showed that the top three most popular shots used were Lift, Net and Clear. It was also found' that there were significant differences among the percentage of shots used in the three court areas as well, as the type of shots used by males and females

    Local Structure and It's Effect on The Ferromagnetic Properties of La0.5_{0.5}Sr0.5_{0.5}CoO3_3 thin films}

    We have used high-resolution Extended X-ray Absorption Fine-Structure and diffraction techniques to measure the local structure of strained La0.5_{0.5}Sr0.5_{0.5}CoO3_3 films under compression and tension. The lattice mismatch strain in these compounds affects both the bond lengths and the bond angles, though the larger effect on the bandwidth is due to the bond length changes. The popular double exchange model for ferromagnetism in these compounds provides a correct qualitative description of the changes in Curie temperature TCT_C, but quantitatively underestimates the changes. A microscopic model for ferromagnetism that provides a much stronger dependence on the structural distortions is needed.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Symmetry-breaking skyrmion states in fractional quantum Hall systems

    We calculate in an analyical fashion the energies and net spins of skyrmions in fractional quantum Hall systems, based on the suggestion that skyrmion states are spontaneously LZL_Z and SZS_Z symmetry-breaking states. The quasihole-skyrmion state with a charge e/3-e/3 around ν\nu = 1/3, where the ground state is known as a spin-polarized ferromagnetic state, is found to exist even in high magnetic fields up to about 7 T for GaAs samples.Comment: There is conceptual change.
