    IS Students in Demand: Products of the Reengineered IS Classroom

    Research suggests that IS people have lower social needsthan people in other occupations. Indeed, personal research on what motivates IS professionals reveals that interacting with other people and establishing relationships are some of the lower-rated motivational factors. Perhaps then, it should not be too surprising to learn that one of the most often heard complaints of IS majors relates to the inadequacy of their communication skills. Corroborating evidence is abundant. For example, IS departments, consulting companies, and computer vendors often recruit people who do not major in IS. These firms instead overlook the best and brightest IS students to recruit non-IS students that have developed interpersonal skills through other means --experience with student organizations, fraternities or sororities, or membership in student chapters of professional business societies on campus. When asked why this is the case, recruiters indicate that the ability to communicate effectively is a critical skill in their organizations, and that the interpersonal skills possessed by their candidates were fundamentally more important than the technical skills possessed by IS graduates. Recruiters feel that technical deficiencies possessed by their newly-hired employees can be overcome in training programs, whereas deficienciesin the ability to communicate effectively present a much larger training challenge. This is consistent with recent literature which reports that of all skills, the following are the most sought after by employers [1]: •listening and oral communication •group effectiveness: interpersonal skills, negotiation, and teamwork •adaptability: creative thinking and problem solving •personal management of career development Consequently, we as IS educators owe it to our students to begin to consider developing these skills within the IS curriculu

    The “maternal effect” on epilepsy risk: Analysis of familial epilepsies and reassessment of prior evidence

    Objective: Previous studies have observed that epilepsy risk is higher among offspring of affected women thanoffspring of affected men. We tested whether this “maternal effect” was present in familial epilepsies, which areenriched for genetic factors that contribute to epilepsy risk.Methods: We assessed evidence of a maternal effect in a cohort of families containing ≥3 persons with epilepsyusing three methods: (1) “downward-looking” analysis, comparing the rate of epilepsy in offspring of affectedwomen versus men; (2) “upward-looking” analysis, comparing the rate of the epilepsy among mothers versusfathers of affected individuals; (3) lineage analysis, comparing the the proportion of affected individuals withfamily history of epilepsy on the maternal versus paternal side.Results: Downward-looking analysis revealed no difference in epilepsy rates among offspring of affectedmothers versus fathers (prevalence ratio 1.0, 95% CI 0.8, 1.2). Upward-looking analysis revealed more affectedmothers than affected fathers; this effect was similar for affected and unaffected sibships (odds ratio 0.8, 95%CI 0.5, 1.2) and was explained by a combination of differential fertility and participation rates. Lineage analysisrevealed no significant difference in the likelihood of maternal versus paternal family history of epilepsy.Interpretation: We found no evidence of a maternal effect on epilepsy risk in this familial epilepsy cohort.Confounding sex imbalances can create the appearance of a maternal effect in upward-looking analyses andmay have impacted prior studies.     Implications for the origin of dwarf early-type galaxies: a detailed look at the isolated rotating dwarf early-type galaxy CG 611, with ramifications for the Fundamental Plane's (S_K)^2 kinematic scaling and the spin-ellipticity diagram

    Selected from a sample of nine, isolated, dwarf early-type galaxies (ETGs) having the same range of kinematic properties as dwarf ETGs in clusters, we use CG 611 (LEDA 2108986) to address the Nature versus Nurture debate regarding the formation of dwarf ETGs. The presence of faint disk structures and rotation within some cluster dwarf ETGs has often been heralded as evidence that they were once late-type spiral or dwarf irregular galaxies prior to experiencing a cluster-induced transformation into an ETG. However, CG 611 also contains significant stellar rotation (~20 km/s) over its inner half light radius, R_(e,maj)=0.71 kpc, and its stellar structure and kinematics resemble those of cluster ETGs. In addition to hosting a faint young nuclear spiral within a possible intermediate-scale stellar disk, CG 611 has accreted an intermediate-scale, counter-rotating gas disk. It is therefore apparent that dwarf ETGs can be built by accretion events, as opposed to disk-stripping scenarios. We go on to discuss how both dwarf and ordinary ETGs with intermediate-scale disks, whether under (de)construction or not, are not fully represented by the kinematic scaling S_0.5=sqrt{ 0.5(V_rot)^2 + sigma^2 }, and we also introduce a modified spin-ellipticity diagram, lambda(R)-epsilon(R), with the potential to track galaxies with such disks.Comment: 15 pages (includes 9 figures and an extensive 2+ page reference list

    GaN-Based Detector Enabling Technology for Next Generation Ultraviolet Planetary Missions

    The ternary alloy AlN-GaN-InN system provides several distinct advantages for the development of UV detectors for future planetary missions. First, (InN), (GaN) and (AlN) have direct bandgaps 0.8, 3.4 and 6.2 eV, respectively, with corresponding wavelength cutoffs of 1550 nm, 365 nm and 200 nm. Since they are miscible with each other, these nitrides form complete series of indium gallium nitride (In(sub l-x)Ga(sub x)N) and aluminum gallium nitride (Al(sub l-x)Ga(sub x)N) alloys thus allowing the development of detectors with a wavelength cut-off anywhere in this range. For the 2S0-365 nm spectral wavelength range AlGaN detectors can be designed to give a 1000x solar radiation rejection at cut-off wavelength of 325 nm, than can be achieved with Si based detectors. For tailored wavelength cut-offs in the 365-4S0 nm range, InGaN based detectors can be fabricated, which still give 20-40x better solar radiation rejection than Si based detectors. This reduced need for blocking filters greatly increases the Detective Quantum efficiency (DQE) and simplifies the instrument's optical systems. Second, the wide direct bandgap reduces the thermally generated dark current to levels allowing many observations to be performed at room temperature. Third, compared to narrow bandgap materials, wide bandgap semiconductors are significantly more radiation tolerant. Finally, with the use of an (AI, In)GaN array, the overall system cost is reduced by eliminating stringent Si CCD cooling systems. Compared to silicon, GaN based detectors have superior QE based on a direct bandgap and longer absorption lengths in the UV

    A Role for cAMP in Long-Term Depression at Hippocampal Mossy Fiber Synapses

    AbstractMossy fiber synapses on hippocampal CA3 pyramidal cells, in addition to expressing an NMDA receptor–independent form of long-term potentiation (LTP), have recently been shown to express a novel presynaptic form of long-term depression (LTD). We have studied the mechanisms underlying mossy fiber LTD and present evidence that it is triggered, at least in part, by a metabotropic glutamate receptor–mediated decrease in adenylyl cyclase activity, which leads to a decrease in the activity of the cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA) and a reversal of the presynaptic processes responsible for mossy fiber LTP. The bidirectional control of synaptic strength at mossy fiber synapses by activity therefore appears to be due to modulation of the cAMP-PKA signaling pathway in mossy fiber boutons

    A general approach for robust integrated polarization rotators

    Integrated polarization rotators suffer from very high sensitivity to fabrication errors. A polarization rotator scheme that substantially increases fabrication tolerances is proposed. In the proposed scheme, two tunable polarization phase shifters are used to connect three rotator waveguide sections. By means of properly setting the polarization phase shifters, fabrication errors are compensated and perfect polarization rotation is achieved. Analytical conditions are shown that determine the maximum deviation that can be corrected with the proposed scheme. A design example is discussed, where the thermo-optic effect is used to provide the required tunable polarization phase shifting. Calculated 40dB extinction ratio is shown in presence of fabrication errors that would yield a 4dB extinction ratio in the conventional approach. © (2013) COPYRIGHT Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE).
