A Classification Scheme for Phenomenological Universalities in Growth Problems
A classification in universality classes of broad categories of
phenomenologies, belonging to different disciplines, may be very useful for a
crossfertilization among them and for the purpose of pattern recognition. We
present here a simple scheme for the classification of nonlinear growth
problems. The success of the scheme in predicting and characterizing the well
known Gompertz, West and logistic models suggests to us the study of a hitherto
unexplored class of nonlinear growth problems.Comment: 4 pages,1 figur
Electric pulse induced electronic patchwork in the Mott insulator GaTa4Se8
Following a recent discovery of the Insulator-to-Metal Transition induced by electric field in GaTa4Se8, we performed a detailed Scanning Tunneling Microscopy/Spectroscopy study of both pristine (insulating) and transited (conducting) crystals of this narrow gap Mott insulator. The spectroscopic maps show that pristine samples are spatially homogeneous insulators while the transited samples reveal at nanometer scale a complex electronic pattern that consists of metallic and superinsulating patches immersed in the pristine insulating matrix. Surprisingly, both kinds of patches are accompanied by a strong local topographic inflation, thus evidencing for a strong electron-lattice coupling involved in this metal-insulator transition. Finally, using a strong electric field generated across the STM tunneling junction, we demonstrate the possibility to trig the metal-insulator transition locally even at room temperature
Multifragmentation process for different mass asymmetry in the entrance channel around the Fermi energy
The influence of the entrance channel asymmetry upon the fragmentation
process is addressed by studying heavy-ion induced reactions around the Fermi
energy. The data have been recorded with the INDRA 4pi array. An event
selection method called the Principal Component Analysis is presented and
discussed. It is applied for the selection of central events and furthermore to
multifragmentation of single source events. The selected subsets of data are
compared to the Statistical Multifragmentation Model (SMM) to check the
equilibrium hypothesis and get the source characteristics. Experimental
comparisons show the evidence of a decoupling between thermal and compresional
(radial flow) degrees of freedom in such nuclear systems.Comment: 28 pages, 15 figures, article sumitted to Nuclear Physics
Dynamical effects in multifragmentation at intermediate energies
The fragmentation of the quasi-projectile is studied with the INDRA
multidetector for different colliding systems and incident energies in the
Fermi energy range. Different experimental observations show that a large part
of the fragmentation is not compatible with the statistical fragmentation of a
fully equilibrated nucleus. The study of internal correlations is a powerful
tool, especially to evidence entrance channel effects. These effects have to be
included in the theoretical descriptions of nuclear multifragmentation.Comment: 13 pages, 26 figures, submitted to Physical Review
