Discovery of a Nearby Low-Surface-Brightness Spiral Galaxy

    Get PDF
During the course of a search for compact, isolated gas clouds moving with anomalous velocities in or near our own Galaxy (Braun and Burton 1998 A&A, in press), we have discovered, in the data of the Leiden/Dwingeloo survey (Hartmann and Burton 1997, Atlas of Galactic Neutral Hydrogen, CUP) of Galactic hydrogen, the HI signature of a large galaxy, moving at a recession velocity of 282 km/s, with respect to our Galaxy. Deep multicolor and spectroscopic optical observations show the presence of star formation in scattered HII regions; radio HI synthesis interferometry confirms that the galaxy is rich in HI and has the rotation signature of a spiral galaxy; a submillimeter observation failed to detect the CO molecule. The radio and optical evidence combined suggest its classification as a low-surface-brightness spiral galaxy. It is located in close spatial and kinematic proximity to the galaxy NGC 6946. The newly-discovered galaxy, which we call Cepheus 1, is at a distance of about 6 Mpc. It is probably to be numbered amongst the nearest few LSB spirals.Comment: 13 page LaTeX, requires aastex, 4 GIF figures. Accepted for publication in the AJ, January 199

Spin liquid ground state in a two dimensional non-frustrated spin model

We consider an exchange model describing two isotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets coupled by a quartic term on the square lattice. The model is relevant for systems with orbital degeneracy and strong electron-vibron coupling in the large Hubbard repulsion limit, and is known to show a spin-Peierls-like dimerization in one dimension. In two dimensions we calculate energy gaps, susceptibilities, and correlation functions with a Green's Function Monte Carlo. We find a finite spin gap and no evidence of any kind of order. We conclude that the ground state is, most likely, a spin liquid of resonating valence bonds.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, Revte

Laser production of gas phase complexes of metal α-aminophosphonic acid mixtures and their role in chiral recognition

    Get PDF
Clusters between first-group metal ions and chiralα-aminophosphonic acids have been readily generated by Pulsed Laser Ablation (PLA) and by Electrospray Ionization (ESI) and their fragmentation investigated by mass spectrometry. The complexes studied have the general formula[Me(I)Cl2]+, where Me(I) is H, Li, Na, or K, C is (R)-(—)-(1-aminoethyl) phosphonic acid(ER)and (S)-(+)-(1-aminoethyl) phosphonic acid(ES),(1R)-(+)-(1-amino-2-methylpropyl) phosphonic acid(PR)and (1S)-(—)-(1-amino-2-methylpropyl) phosphonic acid(PS),(1R)-(-)-(1-amino-hexyl) phosphonic acid (HR) and (1S)-(+)-(1-amino-hexyl) phosphonic acid (HS), o-phospho-L-serine (SS)ando-phospho-D-serine(SR), and L is a referenceα-aminophosphonic acid (E, P, H or S) of defined configuration. Collision induced dissociation (CID) of diastereomeric[Me(I)Cl2]+complexes leads to fragmentation patterns characterized by[Me(I)Cl]+/[Me(I)L2]+abundance ratios which depend upon the configuration of solute C. These different spectral features were correlated to the different stability of the diastereomeric[Me(I)CRL]+and[Me(I)CSL]+complexes in the gas phase

Photonic band gaps and defect states induced by excitations of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

We study the interaction of a Bose-Einstein condensate, which is confined in an optical lattice, with a largely detuned light field propagating through the condensate. If the condensate is in its ground state it acts as a periodic dielectric and gives rise to photonic band gaps at optical frequencies. The band structure of the combined system of condensed lattice-atoms and photons is studied by using the concept of polaritons. If elementary excitations of the condensate are present, they will produce defect states inside the photonic band gaps. The frequency of localized defect states is calculated using the Koster-Slater model.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure, RevTe

Wave Packet Echoes in the Motion of Trapped Atoms

    Get PDF
We experimentally demonstrate and systematically study the stimulated revival (echo) of motional wave packet oscillations. For this purpose, we prepare wave packets in an optical lattice by non-adiabatically shifting the potential and stimulate their reoccurence by a second shift after a variable time delay. This technique, analogous to spin echoes, enables one even in the presence of strong dephasing to determine the coherence time of the wave packets. We find that for strongly bound atoms it is comparable to the cooling time and much longer than the inverse of the photon scattering rate
