    Forward-backward asymmetry of photoemission in C60_{60} excited by few-cycle laser pulses

    We theoretically analyze angle-resolved photo-electron spectra (ARPES) generated by the interaction of C60_{60} with intense, short laser pulses. In particular, we focus on the impact of the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) onto the angular distribution. The electronic dynamics is described by time-dependent density functional theory, and the ionic background of \csixty is approximated by a particularly designed jellium model. Our results show a clear dependence of the angular distributions onto the CEP for very short pulses covering only very few laser cycles, which disappears for longer pulses. For the specific laser parameters used in a recent experiments, a very good agreement is obtained. Furthermore, the asymmetry is found to depend on the energy of the emitted photoelectrons. The strong influence of the angular asymmetry of electron emission onto the CEP and pulse duration suggests to use this sensitivity as a means to analyze the structure of few-cycle laser pulses.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

    A Simultaneous Quantum Secure Direct Communication Scheme between the Central Party and Other M Parties

    We propose a simultaneous quantum secure direct communication scheme between one party and other three parties via four-particle GHZ states and swapping quantum entanglement. In the scheme, three spatially separated senders, Alice, Bob and Charlie, transmit their secret messages to a remote receiver Diana by performing a series local operations on their respective particles according to the quadripartite stipulation. From Alice, Bob, Charlie and Diana's Bell measurement results, Diana can infer the secret messages. If a perfect quantum channel is used, the secret messages are faithfully transmitted from Alice, Bob and Charlie to Diana via initially shared pairs of four-particle GHZ states without revealing any information to a potential eavesdropper. As there is no transmission of the qubits carrying the secret message in the public channel, it is completely secure for the direct secret communication. This scheme can be considered as a network of communication parties where each party wants to communicate secretly with a central party or server.Comment: 4 pages, no figur

    From k-essence to generalised Galileons

    We determine the most general scalar field theories which have an action that depends on derivatives of order two or less, and have equations of motion that stay second order and lower on flat space-time. We show that those theories can all be obtained from linear combinations of Lagrangians made by multiplying a particular form of the Galileon Lagrangian by an arbitrary scalar function of the scalar field and its first derivatives. We also obtain curved space-time extensions of those theories which have second order field equations for both the metric and the scalar field. This provide the most general extension, under the condition that field equations stay second order, of k-essence, Galileons, k-Mouflage as well as of the kinetically braided scalars. It also gives the most general action for a scalar classicalizer, which has second order field equations. We discuss the relation between our construction and the Euler hierachies of Fairlie et al, showing in particular that Euler hierachies allow one to obtain the most general theory when the latter is shift symmetric. As a simple application of our formalism, we give the covariantized version of the conformal Galileon.Comment: 25 page

    Confocal microscopic image sequence compression using vector quantization and 3D pyramids

    The 3D pyramid compressor project at the University of Glasgow has developed a compressor for images obtained from CLSM device. The proposed method using a combination of image pyramid coder and vector quantization techniques has good performance at compressing confocal volume image data. An experiment was conducted on several kinds of CLSM data using the presented compressor compared to other well-known volume data compressors, such as MPEG-1. The results showed that the 3D pyramid compressor gave higher subjective and objective image quality of reconstructed images at the same compression ratio and presented more acceptable results when applying image processing filters on reconstructed images

    ÎŽ\delta meson effects on neutron stars in the modified quark-meson coupling model

    The properties of neutron stars are investigated by including ÎŽ\delta meson field in the Lagrangian density of modified quark-meson coupling model. The Σ−\Sigma^- population with ÎŽ\delta meson is larger than that without ÎŽ\delta meson at the beginning, but it becomes smaller than that without ÎŽ\delta meson as the appearance of Ξ−\Xi^-. The ÎŽ\delta meson has opposite effects on hadronic matter with or without hyperons: it softens the EOSes of hadronic matter with hyperons, while it stiffens the EOSes of pure nucleonic matter. Furthermore, the leptons and the hyperons have the similar influence on ÎŽ\delta meson effects. The ÎŽ\delta meson increases the maximum masses of neutron stars. The influence of (σ∗,ϕ)(\sigma^*,\phi) on the ÎŽ\delta meson effects are also investigated.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 4 table

    Epigenomic Regulation of Androgen Receptor Signaling: Potential Role in Prostate Cancer Therapy.

    Androgen receptor (AR) signaling remains the major oncogenic pathway in prostate cancer (PCa). Androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT) is the principle treatment for locally advanced and metastatic disease. However, a significant number of patients acquire treatment resistance leading to castration resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). Epigenetics, the study of heritable and reversible changes in gene expression without alterations in DNA sequences, is a crucial regulatory step in AR signaling. We and others, recently described the technological advance Chem-seq, a method to identify the interaction between a drug and the genome. This has permitted better understanding of the underlying regulatory mechanisms of AR during carcinogenesis and revealed the importance of epigenetic modifiers. In screening for new epigenomic modifiying drugs, we identified SD-70, and found that this demethylase inhibitor is effective in CRPC cells in combination with current therapies. The aim of this review is to explore the role of epigenetic modifications as biomarkers for detection, prognosis, and risk evaluation of PCa. Furthermore, we also provide an update of the recent findings on the epigenetic key processes (DNA methylation, chromatin modifications and alterations in noncoding RNA profiles) involved in AR expression and their possible role as therapeutic targets
