Development of data processing interpretation and analysis system for the remote sensing of trace atmospheric gas species
Problems associated with the development of the measurement of air pollution from satellites (MAPS) experiment program are addressed. The primary thrust of this research was the utilization of the MAPS experiment data in three application areas: low altitude aircraft flights (one to six km); mid altitude aircraft flights (eight to 12 km); and orbiting space platforms. Extensive research work in four major areas of data management was the framework for implementation of the MAPS experiment technique. These areas are: (1) data acquisition; (2) data processing, analysis and interpretation algorithms; (3) data display techniques; and (4) information production

Bond-disordered spin systems: Theory and application to doped high-Tc compounds
We examine the stability of magnetic order in a classical Heisenberg model
with quenched random exchange couplings. This system represents the spin
degrees of freedom in high- compounds with immobile dopants.
Starting from a replica representation of the nonlinear -model, we
perform a renormalization-group analysis. The importance of cumulants of the
disorder distribution to arbitrarily high orders necessitates a functional
renormalization scheme. From the renormalization flow equations we determine
the magnetic correlation length numerically as a function of the impurity
concentration and of temperature. From our analysis follows that
two-dimensional layers can be magnetically ordered for arbitrarily strong but
sufficiently diluted defects. We further consider the dimensional crossover in
a stack of weakly coupled layers. The resulting phase diagram is compared with
experimental data for LaSrCuO.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure
Boosted three-dimensional black-hole evolutions with singularity excision
Binary black hole interactions provide potentially the strongest source of
gravitational radiation for detectors currently under development. We present
some results from the Binary Black Hole Grand Challenge Alliance three-
dimensional Cauchy evolution module. These constitute essential steps towards
modeling such interactions and predicting gravitational radiation waveforms. We
report on single black hole evolutions and the first successful demonstration
of a black hole moving freely through a three-dimensional computational grid
via a Cauchy evolution: a hole moving ~6M at 0.1c during a total evolution of
duration ~60M
Public Interest in Population Genetic Screening for Cancer Risk
An emerging role for DNA sequencing is to identify people at risk for an inherited cancer syndrome in order to prevent or ameliorate the manifestation of symptoms. Two cancer syndromes, Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer and Lynch Syndrome meet the âTier 1â evidence threshold established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for routine testing of patients with a personal or family history of cancer. Advancements in genomic medicine have accelerated public health pilot programs for these highly medically actionable conditions. In this brief report, we provide descriptive statistics from a survey of 746 US respondents from a Qualtrics panel about the publicâs awareness of genetic testing, interest in learning about their cancer risk, and likelihood of participating in a population genetic screening (PGS) test. Approximately of half the respondents were aware of genetic testing for inherited cancer risk (n = 377/745, 50.6%) and would choose to learn about their cancer risk (n-309/635, 48.7%). Characteristics of those interested in learning about their cancer risk differed by educational attainment, age, income, insurance status, having a primary care doctor, being aware of genetic testing, and likelihood of sharing information with family (p < 0.05). A sizeable majority of the respondents who were interested in about learning their cancer risk also said that they were likely to participate in a PGS test that involved a clinical appointment and blood draw, but no out-of-pocket cost (n = 255/309, 82.5%). Reasons for not wanting to participate included not finding test results interesting or important, concerns about costs, and feeling afraid to know the results. Overall, our results suggest that engaging and educating the general population about the benefits of learning about an inherited cancer predisposition may be an important strategy to address recruitment barriers to PGS
Gravitational wave extraction and outer boundary conditions by perturbative matching
We present a method for extracting gravitational radiation from a
three-dimensional numerical relativity simulation and, using the extracted
data, to provide outer boundary conditions. The method treats dynamical
gravitational variables as nonspherical perturbations of Schwarzschild
geometry. We discuss a code which implements this method and present results of
tests which have been performed with a three dimensional numerical relativity
code
Stable characteristic evolution of generic 3-dimensional single-black-hole spacetimes
We report new results which establish that the accurate 3-dimensional
numerical simulation of generic single-black-hole spacetimes has been achieved
by characteristic evolution with unlimited long term stability. Our results
cover a selection of distorted, moving and spinning single black holes, with

The Intriguing Effects of Substituents in the N-Phenethyl Moiety of Norhydromorphone: A Bifunctional Opioid from a Set of âTail Wags Dogâ Experiments
This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.(â)-N-Phenethyl analogs of optically pure N-norhydromorphone were synthesized and pharmacologically evaluated in several in vitro assays (opioid receptor binding, stimulation of [35S]GTPÎłS binding, forskolin-induced cAMP accumulation assay, and MOR-mediated ÎČ-arrestin recruitment assays). âBodyâ and âtailâ interactions with opioid receptors (a subset of Portogheseâs message-address theory) were used for molecular modeling and simulations, where the âaddressâ can be considered the âbodyâ of the hydromorphone molecule and the âmessageâ delivered by the substituent (tail) on the aromatic ring of the N-phenethyl moiety. One compound, N-p-chloro-phenethynorhydromorphone ((7aR,12bS)-3-(4-chlorophenethyl)-9-hydroxy-2,3,4,4a,5,6-hexahydro-1H-4,12-methanobenzofuro[3,2-e]isoquinolin-7(7aH)-one, 2i), was found to have nanomolar binding affinity at MOR and DOR. It was a potent partial agonist at MOR and a full potent agonist at DOR with a ÎŽ/ÎŒ potency ratio of 1.2 in the ([35S]GTPÎłS) assay. Bifunctional opioids that interact with MOR and DOR, the latter as agonists or antagonists, have been reported to have fewer side-effects than MOR agonists. The p-chlorophenethyl compound 2i was evaluated for its effect on respiration in both mice and squirrel monkeys. Compound 2i did not depress respiration (using normal air) in mice or squirrel monkeys.
