On the algorithmic construction of classifying spaces and the isomorphism problem for biautomatic groups

We show that the isomorphism problem is solvable in the class of central extensions of word-hyperbolic groups, and that the isomorphism problem for biautomatic groups reduces to that for biautomatic groups with finite centre. We describe an algorithm that, given an arbitrary finite presentation of an automatic group $\Gamma$, will construct explicit finite models for the skeleta of $K(\Gamma,1)$ and hence compute the integral homology and cohomology of $\Gamma$.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figure

Diacetyl in Australian dry red wines and its significance in wine quality

The diacetyl content of 466 Australian dry red table wines ranged from less than 0.1 ppm to 7.5 ppm with a mean of 2.4 ppm. Malo-lactic fermentation had occurred in 71 per cent of the wines, which had a mean diacetyl level of 2.8 ppm. In wines which had not undergone malo-lactic fermentation the mean diacetyl level 1.3 ppm.Taste threshold tests showed that a difference of as little as 1 ppm could be detected in a light dry red wine containing 0.3 ppm diacetyl. In a full flavoured darker wine of higher quality containing 3 ppm the minimum detectable addition was 1.3 ppm.It is considered that diacetyl in amounts up to 2 to 4 ppm, depending on the wine, improved quality by adding complexity to the flavour. Above these levels the aroma of diacetyl became identifiable as such and resulted in a reduction in quality. The diacetyl content of a range of red table wines stored at 15° C showed a mean decrease of 19 per cent in diacetyl content in 4 months, 22 per cent in 8 months, 26 per cent in 12 months and 28 per c ent in 18 months

Experiential satisfaction with a wholly online marketing unit

This study examines the relationship between students&rsquo; satisfaction with a core undergraduate marketing unit, preference for online or face-to-face mode of teaching delivery and intent to major in marketing. The core undergraduate marketing unit was offered only in a wholly online mode, although many of the students had experienced traditional face-to-face classes in previous units. The sample was 112 undergraduate students. Findings indicated students&rsquo; preference for face-to-face mode of teaching delivery did not affect satisfaction with the marketing unit, but there was a significant relationship between unit satisfaction and students preference for online mode of teaching delivery. Mode of teaching delivery preferences suggested neither the online or face-to-face mode affected students&rsquo; choice in majoring in the marketing discipline, however, there was a significant relationship between student satisfaction and intent to major in marketing.<br /

Strongly bounded groups and infinite powers of finite groups

We define a group as strongly bounded if every isometric action on a metric space has bounded orbits. This latter property is equivalent to the so-called uncountable strong cofinality, recently introduced by G. Bergman. Our main result is that G^I is strongly bounded when G is a finite, perfect group and I is any set. This strengthens a result of Koppelberg and Tits. Students\u27 perception of an online marketing subject : a qualitative approach

Extant literature supports the growing importance of offering flexible modes of learning delivery in order to meet the needs of a diverse student cohort. The increased use of information and communication technologies (ICT) has lead to an enriched learning experience, but has also posed a number of constraints and challenges for students. Although there is an abundance of research regarding students&rsquo; perceptions, attitudes and satisfaction with the online learning environment, most of this is taken from the perspective of the distance education student. The purpose of this qualitative study is to examine these issues from the perspective of a mixed cohort of students (both on and off campus), who are required to complete a core, undergraduate marketing unit exclusively online.<br /

CRYSTAL AND MOLECULAR-STRUCTURE OF 2',3',5'-TRI-O-ACETYL-6-O-(MESITYLENESULPHONYL)GUANOSINE

The structure of a 6-O-mesitylenesulphonyl derivative of 2',3',5'-tri-O-acetylguanosine, C 24 H 29 N50 10 S, has been determined by X-ray diffraction. Crystals are monoclinic, a = 26.370 (4), b = 8.200 (2), c = 17.991 (3) A, fl = 132.77 (4) o. The solution of the structure in space group C2 was not straightforward and is described in detail. Refinement converged at R = 0.110 for 1102 observed reflections. The guanine base displays some deviations from its usual geometry due to the loss of C(6)-O(6) double-bond character. The ribose sugar is C(2')-endo puckered

Genetic diversity of honeybee colonies predicts gut bacterial diversity of individual colony members.

The gut microbiota of social bees is relatively simple and dominated by a set of core taxa found consistently in individuals around the world. Yet, variation remains, and can affect host health. We characterised individual- and regional-scale variation in honeybee (Apis mellifera) gut microbiota from 64 colonies in North-West England by sequencing the V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene, and asked whether microbiota were influenced by host genotype and landscape composition. We also characterised the genotypes of individual bees and the land cover surrounding each colony. The literature-defined core taxa dominated across the region despite the varied environments. However, there was variation in the relative abundance of core taxa, and colony membership explained much of this variation. Individuals from more genetically diverse colonies had more diverse microbiotas, but individual genetic diversity did not influence gut microbial diversity. There were weak trends for colonies in more similar landscapes to have more similar microbiota, and for bees from more urban landscapes to have less diverse microbiota. To our knowledge, this is the first report for any species that the gut bacterial communities of individuals are influenced by the genotypes of others in the population. Polynomial growth of volume of balls for zero-entropy geodesic systems

The aim of this paper is to state and prove polynomial analogues of the classical Manning inequality relating the topological entropy of a geodesic flow with the growth rate of the volume of balls in the universal covering. To this aim we use two numerical conjugacy invariants, the {\em strong polynomial entropy $h_{pol}$} and the {\em weak polynomial entropy $h_{pol}^*$}. Both are infinite when the topological entropy is positive and they satisfy $h_{pol}^*\leq h_{pol}$. We first prove that the growth rate of the volume of balls is bounded above by means of the strong polynomial entropy and we show that for the flat torus this inequality becomes an equality. We then study the explicit example of the torus of revolution for which we can give an exact asymptotic equivalent of the growth rate of volume of balls, which we relate to the weak polynomial entropy.Comment: 22 page

Degenerations of ideal hyperbolic triangulations

Let M be a cusped 3-manifold, and let T be an ideal triangulation of M. The deformation variety D(T), a subset of which parameterises (incomplete) hyperbolic structures obtained on M using T, is defined and compactified by adding certain projective classes of transversely measured singular codimension-one foliations of M.
