Rifts in Spreading Wax Layers
We report experimental results on the rift formation between two freezing wax
plates. The plates were pulled apart with constant velocity, while floating on
the melt, in a way akin to the tectonic plates of the earth's crust. At slow
spreading rates, a rift, initially perpendicular to the spreading direction,
was found to be stable, while above a critical spreading rate a "spiky" rift
with fracture zones almost parallel to the spreading direction developed. At
yet higher spreading rates a second transition from the spiky rift to a zig-zag
pattern occurred. In this regime the rift can be characterized by a single
angle which was found to be dependent on the spreading rate. We show that the
oblique spreading angles agree with a simple geometrical model. The coarsening
of the zig-zag pattern over time and the three-dimensional structure of the

Design of an electron microscope phase plate using a focused continuous-wave laser
We propose a Zernike phase contrast electron microscope that uses an intense
laser focus to convert a phase image into a visible image. We present the
relativistic quantum theory of the phase shift caused by the
laser-electron-interaction, study resonant cavities for enhancing the laser
intensity, and discuss applications in biology, soft materials science, and

Functions of the Microbiota for the Physiology of Animal Metaorganisms
Animals are usually regarded as independent entities within their respective environments. However, within an organism, eukaryotes and prokaryotes interact dynamically to form the so-called metaorganism or holobiont, where each partner fulfils its versatile and crucial role. This review focuses on the interplay between microorganisms and multicellular eukaryotes in the context of host physiology, in particular aging and mucus-associated crosstalk. In addition to the interactions between bacteria and the host, we highlight the importance of viruses and nonmodel organisms. Moreover, we discuss current culturing and computational methodologies that allow a deeper understanding of underlying mechanisms controlling the physiology of metaorganisms

State of Nature 2019 presents an overview of how the country’s wildlife is faring, looking back over nearly 50 years of monitoring to see how nature has changed in the UK, its Crown Dependencies and Overseas Territories. As well as this long-term view, we focus on what has happened in the last decade, and so whether things are getting better or worse for nature.
