The global dimension of the economy in general and of the steel industry in particular makes the decision regarding the location of new production facilities a challenge for managers. This paper tries to provide tools that make the decision taking process easier. Is assumed that certain tax levy rates are important to this process and they are compared and analyzed. Finally, based on this analysis this paper tries to prioritize some countries in terms of their economic attractiveness in order to identify the most suitable country for placing a steel factory

Medial Temporal Arterio-Venous Malformation: Case Report

We introduce an uncommon case of small arterio-venous malformation (AVM) on a critical location. A young woman with left anterior medial temporal AVM was referred to our department in comatose state. We decided to treat this case by open surgery. Secondary hydrocephalus occurred and a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt was inserted. The postoperative course was with no complications, and the patient was discharged in good state and six months later she resumed her activity. The case is of interest in the light of the decision-making process, and the techniques and surgical skills for the surgery of arterio-venous malformations on this critical location

Surgery of high grade gliomas - pros in favor of maximal cytoreductive surgery

Background: Malignant glioma is themost common primary brain tumour inadults. More and more studies are focusedon the role of surgery in prolonged medianof survival and survival at two years. Thepurpose of this study is to add somearguments in favour of radical surgery inmalignant glioma.Material and Methods: The study is based433 cases of high grade cerebral gliomaoperated between 01.01.2000-31.12.2009 atthe Department of Neurosurgery, ClujCounty Emergency Hospital. We analyzedage, gender, type and duration ofsymptoms, type of surgery, pathologicaldiagnosis and the correlation of thesefactors with overall survival. Data for longterm follow up were available for 266patients.Results: The results shows, according totheir histological features, the fallowingdispersions: astrocitomas grade III (28%),glioblastoma multiforme (64%), high gradeoligodendrogliomas (5%) and high gradeependimomas (3%). The global survivalrate was 47 % at 12 months, 26,3% at 18months and 16,7% at 24 months. The ageand type of surgery are prognostic factorsthat significantly influenced the survival at12, 18 and 24 months (9,3 months age <65years versus 7,1 months age >65 years; 9,2months GTR versus 6,4 months STR-at 12months monitoring; 11,7 months age <65versus 7,7 months age >65; 11,5 monthsGTR versus 7,1 months STR-at 18 monthsmonitoring; 12,8 months age <65 versus 8months age >65; 12,6 months GTR versus7,5 months STR –at 24 monthsmonitoring).Conclusions: Our study shows that longterm postoperative outcome after radicalsurgical resection are better than the resultsof either partial resection or simple biopsy;in terms of duration of survival (thedifference of mean survival at 12, 18 and 24months monitoring was 2,8 months, 4,4months and 5,1 months respectively infavour of patients with gross total removal)

Valence change of praseodymium in Pr0.5Ca0.5CoO3 investigated by x-ray absorption spectroscopy

X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements in Pr0.5Ca0.5CoO3 were performed at the Pr M4,5, Pr L3, and Ca L2,3 absorption edges as a function of temperature below 300 K. Ca spectra show no changes down to 10 K while a noticeable thermally dependent evolution takes place at the Pr edges across the metal-insulator transition. Spectral changes are analyzed by different methods, including multiple scattering simulations, which provide quantitative details on an electron loss at Pr 4f orbitals. We conclude that in the insulating phase a fraction [15(+5)%] of Pr3+ undergoes a further oxidation to adopt a hybridized configuration composed of an admixture of atomic-like 4f1 states (Pr4+) and f- symmetry states on the O 2p valence band (Pr3+L states) indicative of a strong 4f- 2p interaction.Comment: 19 pages (.doc), 4 figures, Phys. The impact of resource dependence of the mechanisms of life on the spatial population dynamics of an in silico microbial community

Biodiversity has a critical impact on ecosystem functionality and stability, and thus the current biodiversity crisis has motivated many studies of the mechanisms that sustain biodiversity, a notable example being non-transitive or cyclic competition. We therefore extend existing microscopic models of communities with cyclic competition by incorporating resource dependence in demographic processes, characteristics of natural systems often oversimplified or overlooked by modellers. The spatially explicit nature of our individual-based model of three interacting species results in the formation of stable spatial structures, which have significant effects on community functioning, in agreement with experimental observations of pattern formation in microbial communities. Let us assume that the supplier ofelectromechanical devices for the oil industry hasalready selected its target market. When it is the onlysupplier for that market, it will be able to sell at a pricethat would bring it considerable profit.
