The death of Eileen Chang on September 8, 1995 in Los Angeles made headlines in all the Chinese newspapers. In the Chinese-speaking areas of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Mainland China, a veritable cult of mystique has been built around her by both public media and the large number of her fans (who called themselves Chang-mi or Chang-fans”). However, in the last twenty-three years of her life Chang lived quietly and incognito in Los Angeles, shunning all social contact and escaping publicity by constantly changing her residences in numerous hotels, motels, and small apartment houses until her death in an obscure apartment building in the Westwood section of Los Angeles. This “mystery” of her last years adds only more glamour to her legend: she was like a retired movie star past her prime, like Greta Garbo

The relationship between tax evasion and tax revenue in Chang, Lai and Chang (1999)

Chang, Lai and Chang (1999) use a micro-founded short-term macroeconomic model, with an imperfectly competitive market, to analyze, among other issues, the relationship between tax evasion and tax revenue. They show that this relationship depends upon the market structure. In particular, when the market becomes perfectly competitive, this relationship can be non monotonic. Although CLC give an intuition of this result, based on the interaction of two opposite effects, they do not make explicit the form of this relationship. The goal of this note is precisely to show that, within the Chang, Lai and Chang (1999) model, one can completely characterize the shape of the relationship between tax evasion and tax revenue under perfect competition. Under some parametric conditions, the tax revenue decreases with tax evasion otherwise, their relationship takes the form of a `Laffer curve'.

Subspace Alignment Based Domain Adaptation for RCNN Detector

In this paper, we propose subspace alignment based domain adaptation of the state of the art RCNN based object detector. The aim is to be able to achieve high quality object detection in novel, real world target scenarios without requiring labels from the target domain. While, unsupervised domain adaptation has been studied in the case of object classification, for object detection it has been relatively unexplored. In subspace based domain adaptation for objects, we need access to source and target subspaces for the bounding box features. The absence of supervision (labels and bounding boxes are absent) makes the task challenging. In this paper, we show that we can still adapt sub- spaces that are localized to the object by obtaining detections from the RCNN detector trained on source and applied on target. Then we form localized subspaces from the detections and show that subspace alignment based adaptation between these subspaces yields improved object detection. This evaluation is done by considering challenging real world datasets of PASCAL VOC as source and validation set of Microsoft COCO dataset as target for various categories.Comment: 26th British Machine Vision Conference, Swansea, U

A note on the phonetic evolution of yod-pa-red in Central Tibet.

Despite the current inconsistent spellings such as yod-red (Tournadre 1996: 229-231 et passim, 2003), yog-red (Denwood 1999: 158 et passim), and yoḥo-red (Hu et al. 1989: 64 et passim) of the existential copula and auxiliary verb which is pronounced as yɔɔ ̀ ree ̀ (Chang and Shefts 1964: 15) or yo:re ' (Tournadre 1996: 229-231) there is widespread agreement that yod-pa-red is the etymological origin of this morpheme (Chang and Chang 1968: 106ff, Tournadre 1996: 229). It is regularly spelled yod-pa-red in the newspaper articles collected from the Mi dmaṅs brñan par (人民畫 報 Peoples Pictorial) by Kamil Sedláček (1972, e.g. p. 27, bsam-gyi yod-pa-red ‘he was thinking’). The pronunciation of this auxiliary is not what one would predict from the spelling. In all likelihood it is the frequency and unstressed syntactic position of the word which led to this deviant phonetic development. The existence of studies and handbooks for the language of Lhasa over more than a century permits us to trance the phonetic development of yod-pa-red with surprising precision

Comment on ``Effective Mass and g-Factor of Four Flux Quanta Composite Fermions"

In a recent Letter, Yeh et al.[Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 592 (1999)] have shown beautiful experimental results which indicate that the composite fermions with four flux quanta ($^4$CF) behave as fermions with mass and spin just like those with two flux quanta. They observed the collapse of the fractional quantum Hall gaps when the following condition is satisfied with some integer $j$, $g^*\mu_{\rm B}B_{\rm tot} = j \hbar \omega_{\rm c}^*$, where $g^*$ and $\omega_{\rm c}^*$ are the g-factor and the cyclotron frequency of the $^4$CF, respectively. However, in their picture the gap at the Fermi energy remains always finite even if the above condition is satisfied, thus the reason of the collapse was left as a mystery.
