    Color separate singlets in e+ee^+e^- annihilation

    We use the method of color effective Hamiltonian to study the properties of states in which a gluonic subsystem forms a color singlet, and we will study the possibility that such a subsystem hadronizes as a separate unit. A parton system can normally be subdivided into singlet subsystems in many different ways, and one problem arises from the fact that the corresponding states are not orthogonal. We show that if only contributions of order 1/Nc21/N_c^2 are included, the problem is greatly simplified. Only a very limited number of states are possible, and we present an orthogonalization procedure for these states. The result is simple and intuitive and could give an estimate of the possibility to produce color separated gluonic subsystems, if no dynamical effects are important. We also study with a simple MC the possibility that configurations which correspond to "short strings" are dynamically favored. The advantage of our approach over more elaborate models is its simplicity, which makes it easier to estimate color reconnection effects in reactions which are more complicated than the relatively simple e+ee^+e^- annihilation.Comment: Revtex, 24 pages, 7 figures; Compared to the previous version, 1 new figure is added and Monte-Carlo results are re-analyzed, as suggested by the referee; To appear in Phys.     Stalling of Helicopter Blades

    Theoretical studies have predicted that operation of helicopter rotor beyond certain combinations of thrust, forward speed, and rotational speed might be prevented by rapidly increasing stalling of the retreating blade. The same studies also indicate that the efficiency of the rotor will increase until these limits are reached or closely approached, so that it is desirable to design helicopter rotors for operation close to the limits imposed by blade stalling. Inasmuch as the theoretical predictions of blade stalling involve numerous approximations and assumptions, an experimental investigation was needed to determine whether, in actual practice, the stall did occur and spread as predicted and to establish the amount of stalling that could be present without severe vibration or control difficulties being introduced.     Dust Distribution in Gas Disks. A Model for the Ring Around HR 4796A

    There have been several model analyses of the near and mid IR flux from the circumstellar ring around HR4796A. In the vicinity of a young star, the possibility that the dust ring is embedded within a residual protostellar gas disk cannot be ruled out. In a gas-rich environment, larger sizes (>100μm>100 \mu m) are needed for the particles to survive the radiative blow out. The total dust mass required to account for the IR flux is <101M< 10^{-1} M_\oplus. The combined influence of gas and stellar radiation may also account for the observed sharp inner boundary and rapidly fading outer boundary of the ring. The pressure gradient induced by a small (10%) amplitude variation in the surface density distribution of a low-mass gaseous disk would be sufficient to modify the rotation speed of the gas.Comment: proof read version, 26 pages, LaTex, 11 figures.     Study of the Linked Dipole Chain Model in heavy quark production at the Tevatron

    We present calculations of charm and beauty production at Tevatron within the framework of kT-factorization, using the unintegrated gluon distributions as obtained from the Linked Dipole Chain model. The analysis covers transverse momentum and rapidity distributions and the azimuthal correlations between b and bbar quarks (or rather muons from their decay) which are powerful tests for the different unintegrated gluon distributions. We compare the theoretical results with recent experimental data taken by D0 and CDF collaborations at the Tevatron Run I and II.Comment: 16 page

    Detecting Gluino-Containing Hadrons

    When SUSY breaking produces only dimension-2 operators, gluino and photino masses are of order 1 GeV or less. The gluon-gluino bound state has mass 1.3-2.2 GeV and lifetime > 10^{-5} - 10^{-10} s. This range of mass and lifetime is largely unconstrained because missing energy and beam dump techniques are ineffective. With only small modifications, upcoming K^0 decay experiments can study most of the interesting range. The lightest gluino-containing baryon (uds-gluino) is long-lived or stable; experiments to find it and the uud-gluino are also discussed.Comment: 13 pp, 1 figure (uuencoded).     Relative CC"-Numerical Ranges for Applications in Quantum Control and Quantum Information

    Motivated by applications in quantum information and quantum control, a new type of CC"-numerical range, the relative CC"-numerical range denoted WK(C,A)W_K(C,A), is introduced. It arises upon replacing the unitary group U(N) in the definition of the classical CC"-numerical range by any of its compact and connected subgroups KU(N)K \subset U(N). The geometric properties of the relative CC"-numerical range are analysed in detail. Counterexamples prove its geometry is more intricate than in the classical case: e.g. WK(C,A)W_K(C,A) is neither star-shaped nor simply-connected. Yet, a well-known result on the rotational symmetry of the classical CC"-numerical range extends to WK(C,A)W_K(C,A), as shown by a new approach based on Lie theory. Furthermore, we concentrate on the subgroup SUloc(2n):=SU(2)...SU(2)SU_{\rm loc}(2^n) := SU(2)\otimes ... \otimes SU(2), i.e. the nn-fold tensor product of SU(2), which is of particular interest in applications. In this case, sufficient conditions are derived for WK(C,A)W_{K}(C,A) being a circular disc centered at origin of the complex plane.     A new multivariable 6-psi-6 summation formula

    By multidimensional matrix inversion, combined with an A_r extension of Jackson's 8-phi-7 summation formula by Milne, a new multivariable 8-phi-7 summation is derived. By a polynomial argument this 8-phi-7 summation is transformed to another multivariable 8-phi-7 summation which, by taking a suitable limit, is reduced to a new multivariable extension of the nonterminating 6-phi-5 summation. The latter is then extended, by analytic continuation, to a new multivariable extension of Bailey's very-well-poised 6-psi-6 summation formula.Comment: 16 page

    Search for antiproton decay at the Fermilab Antiproton Accumulator

    A search for antiproton decay has been made at the Fermilab Antiproton Accumulator. Limits are placed on thirteen antiproton decay modes. The results include the first explicit experimental limits on the muonic decay modes of the antiproton, and the first limits on the decay modes e- gamma gamma, and e- omega. The most stringent limit is for the decay mode pbar-> e- gamma. At 90% C.L. we find that tau/B(pbar-> e- gamma) > 7 x 10^5 yr. The most stringent limit for decay modes with a muon in the final state is for the decay pbar-> mu- gamma. At 90% C.L. we find that tau/B(pbar-> mu- gamma) > 5 x 10^4 yr.Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures.
