    Benthic Foraminiferal response to sea level change in the mixed siliciclastic-carbonate system of southern Ashmore Trough (Gulf of Papua)

    Ashmore Trough in the western Gulf of Papua (GoP) represents an outstanding modern example of a tropical mixed siliciclastic-carbonate depositional system where significant masses of both river-borne silicates and bank-derived neritic carbonates accumulate. In this study, we examine how benthic foraminiferal populations within Ashmore Trough vary in response to sea level–driven paleoenvironmental changes, particularly organic matter and sediment supply. Two 11.3-m-long piston cores and a trigger core were collected from the slope of Ashmore Trough and dated using radiocarbon and oxygen isotope measurements of planktic foraminifera. Relative abundances, principal component analyses, and cluster analyses of benthic foraminiferal assemblages in sediment samples identify three distinct assemblages whose proportions changed over time. Assemblage 1, with high abundances of Uvigerina peregrina and Bolivina robusta, dominated between ∼83 and 70 ka (early regression); assemblage 2, with high abundances of Globocassidulina subglobosa, dominated between ∼70 and 11 ka (late regression through lowstand and early transgression); and assemblage 3, with high abundances of neritic benthic species such as Planorbulina mediterranensis, dominated from ∼11 ka to the present (late transgression through early highstand). Assemblage 1 represents heightened organic carbon flux or lowered bottom water oxygen concentration, and corresponds to a time of maximum siliciclastic fluxes to the slope with falling sea level. Assemblage 2 reflects lowered organic carbon flux or elevated bottom water oxygen concentration, and corresponds to an interval of lowered siliciclastic fluxes to the slope due to sediment bypass during sea level lowstand. Assemblage 3 signals increased off-shelf delivery of neritic carbonates, likely when carbonate productivity on the outer shelf (Great Barrier Reef) increased significantly when it was reflooded. Benthic foraminiferal assemblages in the sediment sink (slopes of Ashmore Trough) likely respond to the amount and type of sediment supplied from the proximal source (outer GoP shelf)

    Self-avoiding walks and connective constants

    The connective constant μ(G)\mu(G) of a quasi-transitive graph GG is the asymptotic growth rate of the number of self-avoiding walks (SAWs) on GG from a given starting vertex. We survey several aspects of the relationship between the connective constant and the underlying graph GG. \bullet We present upper and lower bounds for μ\mu in terms of the vertex-degree and girth of a transitive graph. \bullet We discuss the question of whether μϕ\mu\ge\phi for transitive cubic graphs (where ϕ\phi denotes the golden mean), and we introduce the Fisher transformation for SAWs (that is, the replacement of vertices by triangles). \bullet We present strict inequalities for the connective constants μ(G)\mu(G) of transitive graphs GG, as GG varies. \bullet As a consequence of the last, the connective constant of a Cayley graph of a finitely generated group decreases strictly when a new relator is added, and increases strictly when a non-trivial group element is declared to be a further generator. \bullet We describe so-called graph height functions within an account of "bridges" for quasi-transitive graphs, and indicate that the bridge constant equals the connective constant when the graph has a unimodular graph height function. \bullet A partial answer is given to the question of the locality of connective constants, based around the existence of unimodular graph height functions. \bullet Examples are presented of Cayley graphs of finitely presented groups that possess graph height functions (that are, in addition, harmonic and unimodular), and that do not. \bullet The review closes with a brief account of the "speed" of SAW.Comment: Accepted version. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1304.721

    Optimization of an Alkylpolyglucoside-Based Dishwashing Detergent Formulation.

    The aim of this work was to formulate and optimize the washing performance of an alkylpolyglucoside-based dishwashing detergent. The liquid detergent was formulated with five ingredients of commercial origin: anionic (linear sodium alkylbenzenesulfonate and sodium laurylethersulfate), nonionic (C12–C14 alkylpolyglucoside) and zwitterionic (a fatty acid amide derivative with a betaine structure) surfactants, and NaCl for viscosity control. In addition to the plate test, other properties were investigated including ‘‘cloud point’’, viscosity, and emulsion stability. Statistical analysis software was used to generate a central composite experimental design. Then, a second order design and analysis of experiments approach, known as the Response Surface Methodology, was set up to investigate the effects of the five components of the formulation on the studied properties in the region covering plausible component ranges. The method proved to be efficient for locating the domains of concentrations where the desired properties were met

    Effects of serotonin depletion and dopamine depletion on bimodal divided attention.

    OBJECTIVES:This study aimed to explore the effects of acute phenylalanine-tyrosine depletion (APTD) and acute tryptophan depletion (ATD) on bimodal divided attention. A balanced amino acid mixture (BAL) served as control condition. METHODS:54 healthy adults (age: M = 23.8 years) were randomly assigned to APTD, ATD or BAL in a double-blind, between-subject approach. Divided attention was assessed after 4 hours. Blood samples were taken before and 6 hours after challenge intake. RESULTS:Amino acid concentrations following challenge intake significantly decreased (all p ≤ .01). There was a significant difference in the mean reaction time (RT) towards auditory stimuli, but not towards visual stimuli between the groups. Post-hoc comparison of mean RT's (auditory stimuli) showed a significant difference between ATD (RT = 604.0 ms, SD = 56.9 ms) and APTD (RT = 556.4 ms, SD = 54.2 ms; p = .037), but no RT-difference between ATD and BAL or APTD and BAL (RT = 573.6 ms, SD = 45.7 ms). CONCLUSIONS:The results indicate a possible dissociation between the effects of a diminished brain 5-HT and DA synthesis on the performance in a bimodal divided attention task. The difference was exclusively observed within the RT towards auditory signals.     Heavy Meson Production in Proton-Nucleus Reactions with Empirical Spectral Functions

    We study the production of K+,ρ,ωK^+, \rho, \omega and ϕ\phi mesons in p+12Cp + ^{12}C reactions on the basis of empirical spectral functions. The high momentum, high removal energy part of the spectral function is found to be negligible in all cases close to the absolute threshold. Furthermore, the two-step process (pNπNN;πNN+K+,ρ,ω,ϕpN \rightarrow \pi N N; \pi N \rightarrow N + K^+, \rho, \omega, \phi) dominates the cross section at threshold energies in line with earlier calculations based on the folding model.Comment: 18 pages, LaTeX, plus 14 postscript figures, submitted to Z. We show that in the broken symmetry phase a graviton absorbs all scalars and become massive spin 2 particle with five degrees of freedom.
