Scenario's voor de West en de betekenis daarvan voor de Nederlandse Defensie

In 2010 the Kingdom of the Netherlands will undergo an important political change. One of the three countries of the Kingdom, The Netherlands Antilles, will be dissolved. This political revision is a new step in the ongoing, often laborious process of decolonisation of the former Dutch possessions in the Caribbean. The question what this step will mean for the future of these mutual relations is at the centre of this research. Extra focus will be on the presence and duties of the Dutch Military in this area because the Dutch Military on site is one of the eldest symbols of the ties with The Netherlands, and one of the few visible ones. For this research interviews were held with 41 experts concerning the Netherlands Antilles, Aruba and/or Military on site. One of the conclusions of this study is that power plays an important role in the Kingdom relations, and that this power is more of an economic and ideogical nature than a military one.LEI Universiteit LeidenNederlandse Defensie AcademiePolitieke Instituties: Ontwerp, functioneren, effecte

OntoJob: Automated Ontology Learning from Labor Market Data

    Get PDF
Due to the rapidly changing labor market and the consequently widening information gap between the labor market and education, there is a need for methods that can tackle, or at least ease, the construction of labor market ontologies. The current study set out to examine the viability of Ontology Learning (OL) methods for the (semi-)automated construction of labor market ontologies and / or taxonomies. The purpose of this paper is to propose an unsupervised framework, OntoJob, that can identify and extract from raw vacancy text instances, attributes, and relations, such as job titles, worker qualities, and the non-Taxonomic 'is-A' relations between those concepts, and convert those to an expressive descriptive logic. Evaluation of the extracted worker qualities from OntoJob, using a small sample of 5621 job postings representing 1048 occupations, showed an overall lexical precision of 0.36 and recall of 0.22. </p

The dating of shallow faults in the Earth's crust

Direct dating of ductile shear zones and calculation of uplift/exhumation rates can be done using various radiometric dating techniques. But radiometric dating of shallow crustal faulting, which occurs in the crust's brittle regime, has remained difficult(1-4) because the low temperatures typical of shallow crusted faults prevent the complete syntectonic mineral recrystallization that occurs in deeper faults. Both old (detrital) and newly grown (authigenic) fine-grained phyllosilicates are thus preserved in shallow fault zones and therefore their radiometric ages reflect a mixture of both mineral populations. Also, the loss of Ar-39 during neutron irradiation in dating of clay minerals can produce erroneously old ages. Here we present a method of characterizing the clay populations in fault gouge, using X-ray modelling, combined with sample encapsulation, and show how it can be used to date near-surface fault activity reliably. We examine fault gouge from the Lewis thrust of the southern Canadian Rockies, which we determine to be similar to 52 Myr old. This result requires the western North America stress regime to have changed from contraction to extension in only a few million years during the Eocene. We also estimate the uplift/exhumation age and sedimentary source of these rocks to be similar to 172 Myr.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/62567/1/412172a0.pd

Evaluation of a fourth-generation latex agglutination test for the identification of Staphylococcus aureus

In this study, we evaluated a fourth-generation agglutination assay (Staph Plus; DiaMondiaL[DML]) for the rapid identification of Staphylococcus aureus. First, comparison with three third-generation assays (Slidex Staph Plus, bioMérieux; Staphaurex Plus, Murex Diagnostics; Pastorex Staph-Plus, Sanofi Diagnostics Pasteur) was performed on a predefined strain collection: 265 coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS), 266 methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and 262 methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) strains (“strain study”). Second, patient material-derived strains (883 CNS, 847 MSSA and 135 MRSA) were tested concurrently with both the DML and Slidex assays (“daily practice study”). In the strain study, the overall sensitivity and specificity of the DML, Slidex, Staphaurex and Pastorex assays were 99.2% and 100%, 98.1% and 100%, 95.2% and 100%, and 98.2% and 98.8%, respectively. Using the respective tests, the result was indeterminate in 0.0%, 0.6%, 0.4% and 1.5% of the strains. Overall, the sensitivity of the DML and Slidex assays were comparable in both sub-studies. However, in MRSA strains, the sensitivity of the DML assay was significantly lower than the Slidex assay. The specificity of the Slidex assay was significantly higher than the DML assay. However, the percentage of indeterminate results was much higher for the Slidex than the DML assay. In conclusion, the presumptive identification of S. aureus by the DML assay proved to be equal to third-generation latex agglutination assays

    Factsheets. Netwerken Multifunctioneel Ondernemerschap
