    We estimate the numbers and mass spectra of observed lepton and kaon pairs produced from ϕ\phi meson decays in the central rapidity region of an Au+Au collision at lab energy 11.6 GeV/nucleon. The following effects are considered: possible mass shifts, thermal broadening due to collisions with hadronic resonances, and superheating of the resonance gas.     Back gating of a two-dimensional hole gas in a SiGe quantum well

    A device comprising a low-resistivity, n-type, Si substrate as a back gate to a p-type (boron), remote-doped, SiGe quantum well has been fabricated and characterized. Reverse and forward voltage biasing of the gate with respect to the two-dimensional hole gas in the quantum well allows the density of holes to be varied from 8 × 1011 cm–2 down to a measurement-limited value of 4 × 1011 cm–2.     Pathways to economic well-being among teenage mothers in Great Britain

    The present study examines pathways to independence from social welfare among 738 teenage mothers, participants of the 1970 British Cohort Study, who were followed up at age 30 years. Using a longitudinal design, a pathway model is tested, examining linkages between family social background, cognitive ability, school motivation, and individual investments in education, as well as work- and family-related roles. The most important factors associated with financial independence by age 30 are continued attachment to the labor market as well as a stable relationship with a partner (not necessarily the father of the child). Pathways to financial independence, in turn, are predicted through own cognitive resources, school motivation, and family cohesion. Implications of findings for policy making are discussed.© 2010 Hogrefe Publishing

    Delayed recovery of coronary resistive vessel function after coronary angioplasty

    AbstractObjectives. The aim of this study was to use Doppler catheterization and sequential dynamic positron emission tomography (PET) to investigate the role and time course of abnormal coronary resistive vessel function in the impairment of the coronary vasodilator response (maximal/basal coronary blood flow) after successful coronary angioplasty.Background. The coronary vasodilator response may be impaired immediately after coronary angioplasty, despite successful dilation of a flow-limiting stenosis.Methods. Twelve men (mean age 52 ± 10 years) with singlevessel coronary artery disease and normal left ventricular function were studied. The coronary vasodilator response to intravenous dipyridamole (0.5 mg·kg−1over 4 min) was determined from intracoronary Doppler measurement of coronary How velocity, before and after successful angioplasty. Basal and maximal myocardial blood flow in the angioplasty region and a normal region were determined in nine patients with positron emission tomography with H215O at 1 day (PET1), 7 days (PET2) and 3 months (PET3) after angioplasty.Results. The coronary vasodilator response, measured by Doppler catheterization, was similar before and immediately after angioplasty, 1.63 ± 0.41 and 1.62 ± 0.55, respectively (p = NS). After angioplasty, in seven of nine patients without restenosis, basal myocardial blood flow at PET1, PET2and PET3was 0.98 ± 0.16, 0.94 ± 0.09 and 0.99 ± 0.13 ml·min−1·g−1, respectively, in the remote region and 1.19 ± 0.23 (p < 0.01 vs. remote region), 1.17 ± 0.19 (p < 0.01 vs. remote region) and 1.10 ± 0.08 ml·min-1·g−1(p = NS vs. remote region), respectively, in the angioplasty region. Myocardial blood flow after dipyridamole at PET1, PET2and PET3was 3.04 ± 0.68, 3.00 ± 0.71 and 3.00 ± 0.60 ml·ml·min−1g−1, respectively, in the remote region and 2.11 ± 0.80 (p < 0.01 vs. remote region), 2.28 ± 0.73 (p = NS vs. remote region) and 3.06 ± 0.86 ml · min−1· g−1(p = NS vs. remote region), respectively, in the angioplasty region. The coronary vasodilator response at PET1, PET2and PET3was 3.15 ± 0.85, 3.18 ± 0.68 and 3.08 ± 0.75, respectively, in the remote region and 1.80 ± 0.68 (p < 0.01 vs. remote region), 1.94 ± 0.49 (p < 0.01 vs. remote region) and 2.77 ± 0.74 (p = NS vs. remote region), respectively, in the angioplasty region.Conclusions. After successful angioplasty, basal myocardial blood flow is increased for ≄7 days in the angioplasty region, with a reduction in the dipyridamole · induced increase in maximal myocardial blood flow for ≄24 h after the procedure. Thus, the coronary vasodilator response is impaired for ≄7 days after angioplasty, indicating that there is abnormal resistive vessel function in the coronary vascular bed distal to a coronary artery stenosis that persists for 7 days to 3 months

    Thermal effects in Ni/Au and Mo/Au gate metallization AlGaN/GaN HEMT's reliability

    AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMT) are key devices for the next generation of high-power, high-frequency and high-temperature electronics applications. Although significant progress has been recently achieved [1], stability and reliability are still some of the main issues under investigation, particularly at high temperatures [2-3]. Taking into account that the gate contact metallization is one of the weakest points in AlGaN/GaN HEMTs, the reliability of Ni, Mo, Pt and refractory metal gates is crucial [4-6]. This work has been focused on the thermal stress and reliability assessment of AlGaN/GaN HEMTs. After an unbiased storage at 350 o C for 2000 hours, devices with Ni/Au gates exhibited detrimental IDS-VDS degradation in pulsed mode. In contrast, devices with Mo/Au gates showed no degradation after similar storage conditions. Further capacitance-voltage characterization as a function of temperature and frequency revealed two distinct trap-related effects in both kinds of devices. At low frequency (< 1MHz), increased capacitance near the threshold voltage was present at high temperatures and more pronounced for the Ni/Au gate HEMT and as the frequency is lower. Such an anomalous “bump” has been previously related to H-related surface polar charges [7]. This anomalous behavior in the C-V characteristics was also observed in Mo/Au gate HEMTs after 1000 h at a calculated channel temperatures of around from 250 o C (T2) up to 320 ÂșC (T4), under a DC bias (VDS= 25 V, IDS= 420 mA/mm) (DC-life test). The devices showed a higher “bump” as the channel temperature is higher (Fig. 1). At 1 MHz, the higher C-V curve slope of the Ni/Au gated HEMTs indicated higher trap density than Mo/Au metallization (Fig. 2). These results highlight that temperature is an acceleration factor in the device degradation, in good agreement with [3].     The effect of substrate bias and surface gate voltage on the low temperature resistivity of a Si-MOSFET is studied for electron concentrations where the resistivity increases with increasing temperature. This technique offers two degrees of freedom for controlling the electron concentration and the device mobility, thereby providing a means to evaluate the relative importance of electron-electron interactions and disorder in this so-called ``metallic'' regime. For temperatures well below the Fermi temperature, the data obey a scaling law where the disorder parameter (kFlk_{\rm{F}}l), and not the concentration, appears explicitly. This suggests that interactions, although present, do not alter the Fermi-liquid properties of the system fundamentally. Furthermore, this experimental observation is reproduced in results of calculations based on temperature-dependent screening, in the context of Drude-Boltzmann theory.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure

    Molecular hierarchy of mammary differentiation yields refined markers of mammary stem cells

    The partial purification of mouse mammary gland stem cells (MaSCs) using combinatorial cell surface markers (Lin-CD24+CD29hCD49fh) has improved our understanding of their role in normal development and breast tumorigenesis. Despite the significant improvement in MaSC enrichment, there is presently no methodology that adequately isolates pure MaSCs. Seeking new markers of MaSCs, we characterized the stem-like properties and expression signature of label-retaining cells from the mammary gland of mice expressing a controllable H2b-GFP transgene. In this system, the transgene expression can be repressed in a doxycycline-dependent fashion, allowing isolation of slowly dividing cells with retained nuclear GFP signal. Here, we show that H2b-GFPh cells reside within the predicted MaSC compartment and display greater mammary reconstitution unit frequency compared with H2b-GFPneg MaSCs. According to their transcriptome profile, H2b-GFPh MaSCs are enriched for pathways thought to play important roles in adult stem cells. We found Cd1d, a glycoprotein expressed on the surface of antigen-presenting cells, to be highly expressed by H2b-GFPh MaSCs, and isolation of Cd1d+ MaSCs further improved the mammary reconstitution unit enrichment frequency to nearly a single-cell level. Additionally, we functionally characterized a set of MaSC-enriched genes, discovering factors controlling MaSC survival. Collectively, our data provide tools for isolating a more precisely defined population of MaSCs and point to potentially critical factors for MaSC maintenance
