    General multiyear aggregation technology: Methodology and software documentation

    A general methodology is presented for estimating a stratum's at-harvest crop acreage proportion for a given crop year (target year) from the crop's estimated acreage proportion for sample segments from within the stratum. Sample segments from crop years other than the target year are (usually) required for use in conjunction with those from the target year. In addition, the stratum's (identifiable) crop acreage proportion may be estimated for times other than at-harvest in some situations. A by-product of the procedure is a methodology for estimating the change in the stratum's at-harvest crop acreage proportion from crop year to crop year. An implementation of the proposed procedure as a statistical analysis system routine using the system's matrix language module, PROC MATRIX, is described and documented. Three examples illustrating use of the methodology and algorithm are provided

    Inhibition of DNA ejection from bacteriophage by Mg+2 counterions

    The problem of inhibiting viral DNA ejection from bacteriophages by multivalent counterions, specifically Mg+2^{+2} counterions, is studied. Experimentally, it is known that MgSO4_4 salt has a strong and non-monotonic effect on the amount of DNA ejected. There exists an optimal concentration at which the minimum amount of DNA is ejected from the virus. At lower or higher concentrations, more DNA is ejected from the capsid. We propose that this phenomenon is the result of DNA overcharging by Mg+2^{+2} multivalent counterions. As Mg+2^{+2} concentration increases from zero, the net charge of DNA changes from negative to positive. The optimal inhibition corresponds to the Mg+2^{+2} concentration where DNA is neutral. At lower/higher concentrations, DNA genome is charged. It prefers to be in solution to lower its electrostatic self-energy, which consequently leads to an increase in DNA ejection. By fitting our theory to available experimental data, the strength of DNA−-DNA short range attraction energies, mediated by Mg+2^{+2}, is found to be −-0.004 kBTk_BT per nucleotide base. This and other fitted parameters agree well with known values from other experiments and computer simulations.     Using coherent dynamics to quantify spin-coupling within triplet-exciton/polaron complexes in organic diodes

    Quantifying the spin-spin interactions which influence electronic transitions in organic semiconductors is crucial for understanding their magneto-optoelectronic properties. By combining a theoretical model for three spin interactions in the coherent regime with pulsed electrically detected magnetic resonance experiments on MEH-PPV diodes, we quantify the spin-coupling within complexes comprising three spin-half particles. We determine that these particles form triplet-exciton:polaron pairs, where the polaron:exciton exchange is over 5 orders of magnitude weaker (less than 170 MHz) than that within the exciton. This approach providing a direct spectroscopic approach for distinguishing between coupling regimens, such as strongly bound trions, which have been proposed to occur in organic devices.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Aircraft and satellite measurement of ocean wave directional spectra using scanning-beam microwave radars

    A microwave radar technique for remotely measuring the vector wave number spectrum of the ocean surface is described. The technique, which employs short-pulse, noncoherent radars in a conical scan mode near vertical incidence, is shown to be suitable for both aircraft and satellite application, the technique was validated at 10 km aircraft altitude, where we have found excellent agreement between buoy and radar-inferred absolute wave height spectra

    Structural analysis of stratocumulus convection

    The 1 and 20 Hz data are examined from the Electra flights made on July 5, 1987. The flight legs consisted of seven horizontal turbulent legs at the inversion, midcloud, and below clouds, plus 4 soundings made within the same period. The Rosemont temperature sensor and the top and bottom dewpoint sensors were used to measure temperature and humidity at 1 Hz. Inversion structure and entrainment; local dynamics and large scale forcing; convective elements; and decoupling of cloud and subcloud are discussed in relationship to the results of the Electra flight

    Turbulent entrainment at zero mean shear stratified interfaces has been studied extensively in the laboratory and theoretically for the classical situation in which density is a passive tracer of the mixing and the turbulent motions producing the entrainment are directed toward the interface. It is the purpose of the numerical simulations and data analysis to investigate these processes and, specifically, to focus on the following questions: (1) Can local cooling below cloudtop play an important role in setting up convective circulations within the cloud, and bringing about entrainment; (2) Can Cloudtop Entrainment Instability (CEI) alone lead to runaway entrainment under geophysically realistic conditions; and (3) What are the important mechanisms of entrainment at cloudtop under zero or low mean shear conditions

    Mitochondrial DNA and temperature tolerance in lager yeasts

    A growing body of research suggests that the mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) is important for temperature adaptation. In the yeast genus Saccharomyces, species have diverged in temperature tolerance, driving their use in high- or low-temperature fermentations. Here, we experimentally test the role of mtDNA in temperature tolerance in synthetic and industrial hybrids (Saccharomyces cerevisiae × Saccharomyces eubayanus or Saccharomyces pastorianus), which cold-brew lager beer. We find that the relative temperature tolerances of hybrids correspond to the parent donating mtDNA, allowing us to modulate lager strain temperature preferences. The strong influence of mitotype on the temperature tolerance of otherwise identical hybrid strains provides support for the mitochondrial climactic adaptation hypothesis in yeasts and demonstrates how mitotype has influenced the world’s most commonly fermented beverage.This work was supported by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (Hatch project no. 1003258), the NSF (grant no.     Slow Hopping and Spin Dephasing of Coulombically Bound Polaron Pairs in an Organic Semiconductor at Room Temperature

    Polaron pairs are intermediate electronic states that are integral to the optoelectronic conversion process in organic semiconductors. Here, we report on electrically detected spin echoes arising from direct quantum control of polaron pair spins in an organic light-emitting diode at room temperature. This approach reveals phase coherence on a microsecond time scale, and offers a direct way to probe charge recombination and dissociation processes in organic devices, revealing temperature-independent intermolecular carrier hopping on slow time scales. In addition, the long spin phase coherence time at room temperature is of potential interest for developing quantum-enhanced sensors and information processing systems which operate at room temperature
