    Infra-Red thermal image analysis for grapevines

    Trabajo presentado en el 18th International Symposium of the Group of International Experts of vitivinicultural Systems for CoOperation (GIESCO 2013), celebrado en Oporto del 7 al 11 de julio de 2013.-- Número fuera de serie.Infrared thermal images (IRTI) have been used for grapevine research since the early 90’s. Even though its promising results in the assessment of canopy stomatal conductance and plant water status, from the beginning and recent research publications, it has not been fully applied on a commercial scale yet. It is believed that the bottleneck for this technology is the lack of reliable automation tools for IRTI analysis. Accurate and reliable automation technique s will allow the use of this technique to assess the spatial variability of physiological processes within the canopy using infrared cameras mounted on moving vehicles, drones, octocopters or robots. Automated analysis systems are requirement of The Vineyard of The Future initiative, which is an international effort to establis h fully monitored vineyards in the most prominent viticultural and winemaking areas in the world. In this work, a semi-automated IRTI analyses performed using a code written in MATLAB® for estimate dry and wet references excluding non-leaf temperatures was compared with evaporimeter (EvapoSensor, Skye Instruments Ltd, Powys, UK) measurements used to provide dry and wet references from IRTIs. Results obtained from this research (grapevines cv. Tempranillo) showed good and statistically significant correlations between temperatur e references obtained from IRTI analysis and measured values.     Comparison of Vegetation Indices for Leaf Area Index Estimation in Vertical Shoot Positioned Vine Canopies with and without Grenbiule Hail-Protection Netting

    Leaf area per unit surface (LAI—leaf area index) is a valuable parameter to assess vine vigour in several applications, including direct mapping of vegetative−reproductive balance (VRB). Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) has been successfully used to assess the spatial variability of estimated LAI. However, sometimes NDVI is unsuitable due to its lack of sensitivity at high LAI values. Moreover, the presence of hail protection with Grenbiule netting also affects incident light and reflection, and consequently spectral response. This study analyses the effect of protective netting in the LAI−NDVI relationship and, using NDVI as a reference index, compares several indices in terms of accuracy and sensitivity using linear and logarithmic models. Among the indices compared, results show NDVI to be the most accurate, and ratio vegetation index (RVI) to be the most sensitive. The wide dynamic range vegetation index (WDRVI) presented a good balance between accuracy and sensitivity. Soil-adjusted vegetation index 2 (SAVI2) appears to be the best estimator of LAI with linear models. Logarithmic models provided higher determination coefficients, but this has little influence over the normal range of LAI values. A similar NDVI−LAI relationship holds for protected and unprotected canopies in initial vegetation stages, but different functions are preferable once the canopy is fully developed, in particular, if tipping is performed

    Many irrigation strategies have been proposed in olive orchards to overcome both increasing water scarcity and competition for water with other sectors of society. However, threshold values of stomatal conductance (gs) and stem water potential (Ψstem) for use in designing deficit irrigation strategies have not yet been adequately defined. Thus, an experiment was conducted to determine gs and Ψstem thresholds for water stress in a super-intensive olive orchard (cv. Arbequina) located in Pencahue Valley (Maule Region, Chile) over three consecutive growing seasons. The experimental design was completely randomized with four irrigation treatments. The stem water potential (Ψstem) of the T1 treatment was maintained between − 1.4 and − 2.2 MPa, while the T2, T3, and T4 treatments did not receive irrigation from fruit set until they reached a Ψstem threshold of approximately − 3.5, − 5.0, and − 6.0 MPa, respectively. Stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration (Tl), net CO2 assimilation (An), and stem water potential (Ψstem) were measured fortnightly at midday. A significant nonlinear correlation between An and gs was used to establish different levels of water stress. Water stress was considered to be mild or absent when the gs values were greater than 0.18 mol m−2 s−1, whereas water stress was estimated to increase from moderate to severe as gs decreased significantly below 0.18 mol m−2 s−1. Similarly, water stress using Ψstem was determined to be mild or absent above − 2.0 MPa.
