Linking landscape pattern and human disturbance on a regional level : a case study in Beira Interior region, Portugal

The land use and land cover pattern of landscapes are key elements of basic landscape structure; accordingly, his pattern has an important role in landscape management, nature conservation and preservation. In the other hand the human impact on the ecological environment has attracted a significant amount of attention. In this study, hemeroby index (HI) was used to quantify the degree of human disturbance, and the relationship between HI and landscape pattern metrics was explored in a region of Central Portugal. The main objectives of this study were to analyze the temporal and spatial characteristics of landscape pattern, and its relationship with different degrees of human disturbance. The Spearman’s correlations were determined to reveal the statistical connections between the landscape metric parameters and the HI values. At a landscape level the Mean Perimeter-Area Ratio (MPAR) showed a significant statistical connection with the HI. At a class level most of the metrics can be used to estimate the spatial changes of the hemeroby level, with Mean Patch Size (MPS) and Mean Perimeter-Area Ratio (MPAR) showing significant statistical connection with the hemeroby index, for agricultural areas, pastures and seminatural areas.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

An integrated agroforestal suitability model using a GIS-based multicriteria analysis method: A case study of Portugal

It is generally agreed that the choice of the most suitable uses based in soil and climatic factors, complemented with socio-economic criteria, promotes sustainable use of rural land. There are, however, different methodologies for defining the soil suitability to agroforestal systems or natural and seminatural ecosystems, including agricultural uses, forest plantations, agro-forestry areas and priority areas for nature conservation. Many of these methods rely on decision support systems based on multicriteria spatial analysis. In this study we intended to determine the different levels of suitability for agro-forestry use in a subregion located in the center of Portugal, near the border with Spain. To the effect we used a set of soil and topographic variables. The legal constraints and land cover were also included. The suitability evaluation was performed using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). A spatial analysis was also performed in order to confront the land use matrix with the soil potentiality. Bioclimatic modelling in the holocene and in future warming scenarios in Arbutus unedo L.

Growing forests wildfires in Portugal are an increasing concern since forests in the Mediterranean region are vulnerable to recent global warming. Long-term negative effects are expected on the vegetation with the coming increasing drought. The strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo L.) displays potential to be a successfully business-like cultured in several regions of Portugal and southern Europe, as it is well adapted to climate and soils. In Portugal, this species has been used by local populations particularly for spirit production and for fruit consumption, although it has different possible commercial uses, from processed and fresh fruit production to ornamental, pharmaceutical and chemical applications. In addition, due to its pioneer status, it is valuable for land recovery and desertification avoidance, besides being fire resistant. The available strawberry tree’s data is presence-only. For modelling purposes, a set of placements within the landscape of interest (Portugal) was applied. The species, observed in 318 plots, together with a vector of environmental covariates (7 bioclimatic attributes, slope and altitude) and a defined background were used for modeling purposes. Maxent 3.4.1 was the used software, where the estimated quantity is the probability of the presence of the species, conditioned on the environment. Maxent uses the environmental covariate data from the occurrence records and the background sample, to estimate the ratio between the conditional density of the covariates at the presence sites and the marginal (i.e., unconditional) density of covariates across the study area and so, estimating the relative suitability of one place vs. another. Three different climate scenarios (control run; 2050 and 2070) were tested for two emission scenarios (RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5, WorldClim), besides the past, 6,000 BP (Mid-Holocene). The reduction of habitat suitable for this species is very significant in the southern regions, even for the best warming scenario (RCP 4.5) in 2050. Central and Northern mountain regions are predicted refuge for this species. Forest policies and management should consider the impact of climate change on the usable areas for forestry, seeing a case-study species particularly adapted to the Mediterranean regions and wildfires, such as strawberry tree. The distribution of the species in the Middle Holocene agrees with previous genetic and fossils studies in the region, which supported two putative refuges for the species since the Last Glacial Maximum and a cryptic refugia in the East-Central mountain region.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Avaliação dos impactes ambientais de sistemas de produção agrícola alternativos no Baixo Mondego

O objectivo principal deste trabalho centra-se em avaliar os impactes ambientais de dois sistemas de produção agrícola na cultura do milho – Sementeira Directa (SD) e Modo de Produção Biológico (MPB) - na região do Baixo Mondego, Portugal. Durante o estudo, um programa de computador AMBITEC-AGRO - sistema da avaliação do impacto ambiental da tecnologia agropecuária foi utilizado após a adaptação do mesmo à realidade Portuguesa. Um inquérito foi preparado e apresentado aos produtores que aplicavam a(s) tecnologia(s) afim de obter informações sobre o impacte das mesmas quer na parcela ou na região. Os resultados foram recolhidos e inseridos posteriormente no programa afim de proceder à avaliação dos impactes ambientais. Os resultados principais mostram que ambos os sistemas de produção indicam um impacte positivo, com +2.22 para a SD e +2.07 para MPB numa escala de -15 a +15. O software utilizado para avaliação do impacte é de fácil aplicação e pode ser extremamente útil na eco-certificação futura das explorações agrícolas, fornecendo uma ferramenta para avaliar a sua sustentabilidade

Hubungan Penerapan Pendidikan Karakter terhadap Perilaku Sosial Siswa

The aim of this research was identify the correlation between implementation of character education with social behavior of students. The design of the study was correlation research with cross sectional approach. The sampling technique was consecutive sampling with 94 students who attend school in Vocational High School Pekanbaru State 2 were selected based on inclusion criteria. Instrument used the study was a questionnaire consisted of 20 question to asses implementation of character education and 26 question to asses social behavior of students which was valid and reliable. Data analyses used in the study were univariate analysis to know distribution of frequency and bivariate analyses by using chi square. The result showed that p value (0,054) < alpha (0,10). It meant that there was a correlation between implementation of character education with social behavior of students. Educational institutions are expected to be able to optimize the implementation of character education efforts in schools to increase student achievement and to minimize deviant behavior of students

The Effect of Job Motivation, Job Satisfaction, and Attitude towards Profession on Nurse Performance in Outpatient Clinic of Prof. Dr. R.D. Kandou Hospital

In an effort to achieve the goals set by hospital, qualified nurses are needed. Qualified nurses must show good performance. There are many factors that affect nurse performance. This research was conducted to study the effect of job motivation, job satisfaction, and attitude towards profession on nurse performance in the Outpatient Clinics of Prof. Dr. R. D. Kandou Hospital. The research was an analytical study using a survey method. The subjects of this research were the 62 nurses in the Outpatient Clinics. Data were collected via a self-administered questionnaire. Multiple regression analysis was used to examine the relationship among variables. Results show that job motivation had a significant direct influence on nurse performance, job satisfaction also had an effect directly on nurse performance, and attitude toward profession had an effect on nurse performance. Besides that, job motivation and attitude towards the nurse profession proved to have a direct influence on job satisfaction. Based on the findings above, it can be concluded that the variations that occur on nurse performance variable are influenced directly by job motivation, job satisfaction, and attitude towards the profession.
