The names of southwestern European goats: is Iberian ibex the best common name for Capra pyrenaica? The common name designated to a species is important because it connects specialists with non–experts. The matter of the correct common name is relevant to the conservation and management of conspicuous or flag species. The English name "Spanish ibex" to designate Capra pyrenaica is extensive in the scientific literature, and some have defended its appropriateness. However, in our opinion, it is not the best term to designate this species. We propose that "Iberian wild goat" should be used. Herein, we review the etymology, history, taxonomy and public use of the names used to designate goats (domestic and wild) in southwestern Europe during the last two millennia. Used first by Pliny the Elder, the name "ibex" has been applied most often for the Alpine wild goat (C. ibex), and few authors applied this name to C. pyrenaica until the 20th century when some influential works extended its use in the scientific literature. Adult males of C. pyrenaica have lyre–shaped, and typically smooth horns that do not match the ibex morphotype, which has scimitar–shaped knotted horns. Although C. pyrenaica and C. ibex are probably phylogenetically close, their common names do not necessarily have to match. The rules of common names differ from those of scientific names. Cabra montés or cabra brava (wild goat) is the common name used by most authors in the Iberian peninsula. This name is deeply entrenched in the Iberian languages and has been used since the earliest references to the species in mediaeval times. We propose the adoption of "Iberian wild goat" for legal and scientific communication and when interacting with the media

Heat capacity and glass transition in P2O5-H 2O solutions: Support for Mishima's conjecture on solvent water at low temperature

The P2O5-water system has the widest range of continuously glass-forming compositions known for any glassformer + water binary system. Despite the great range of structures explored by the glasses and liquids in this system, the glass transition temperature (Tg) itself varies in a simple monotonic fashion. However the values of Tg reported in the literature show wide disagreement, linked to the different methods of measurement employed. In this work we use differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to obtain both Tg itself and the jump in heat capacity that occurs as the metastable equilibrium of the supercooled liquid relieves the non-ergodic glassy state. Our study covers the molar ratio range of H2O/P2O5 from 1.5 to 14 (corresponding to the mass fraction of P2O5 between 0.36 and 0.84), which includes the compositions corresponding to pyrophosphoric acid (H 4P2O7) and orthophosphoric acid (H 3PO4). The theoretical model of Couchman and Karasz predicts very well the glass transition temperatures of the P2O 5-H2O system over the whole composition range if the relatively large heat capacity change associated with water in aqueous solutions at the glass transition temperature is adopted, instead of the vanishingly small value observed for vapor deposited or hyperquenched pure water. Therefore, solvent water in this ambient pressure P2O5-H 2O system behaves like a different liquid, more closely resembling a high-density liquid (HDL) polyamorph, as suggested by Mishima for electrolytes at high pressures.Fil: Corti, Horacio Roberto. Functional outcomes of supraglottic squamous cell carcinoma treated by transoral laser microsurgery compared with horizontal supraglottic laryngectomy in patients younger and older than 65 years

Splenic size after division of the short gastric vessels in Nissen fundoplication in children

Item does not contain fulltextPURPOSE: Nissen fundoplication is an effective treatment for gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD). Mobilization of the gastric fundus during fundoplication requires division of short gastric vessels of the spleen, which may cause splenic ischemia. The aim of this study was to determine if Nissen fundoplication results in hypotrophy of the spleen. METHODS: We performed pre-operative and post-operative ultrasound measurements of the spleen in children undergoing Nissen fundoplication. During operation, the surgeon estimated the compromised blood flow by assessment of the percentage of discoloration of the spleen. RESULTS: Twenty-four consecutive children were analyzed. Discoloration of the upper pole of the spleen was observed in 11 patients (48%) of a median estimated splenic surface of 20% (range 5-50%). The median ratio for pre-operative and post-operative length, width, and area of the spleen was 0.97, 1.03, and 0.96, respectively. The percentage of the estimated perfusion defect during surgery was not correlated with the ratios. In three patients, the area ratio was smaller than 0.8 (0.67-0.75), meaning that the area decreased with at least 20% after surgery. In none of these patients a discoloration was observed. CONCLUSION: Discoloration of the spleen after Nissen fundoplication is not associated with post-operative splenic atrophy.1 maart 201
