    Proceedings of the OECD/PACIOLI Workshop on Information Needs for the Analysis of Farm Household Income Issues

    The assessment of agricultural policies depends more and more on micro-economic data sets. This is especially true for policies with an income objective in a situation where farm households have different income sources. Among others the OECD has stressed this point in recent years with analytical reports. The PACIOLI network yearly brings together data managers and researchers interested in the innovation of data collection in this area. In April 2004 a joint workshop was organised at the OECD in Paris to bring experts together to exchange best practices. This report contains the proceedings of that workshop

    Decreasing pH impairs sexual reproduction in a Mediterranean coral transplanted at a CO2 vent

    Ocean acidification, due to the increase of carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration in the atmosphere and its absorption by the oceans, affects many aspects of marine calcifying organisms' biology, including reproduction. Most of the available studies on low pH effects on coral reproduction have been conducted on tropical species under controlled conditions, while little information is reported for either tropical or temperate species in the field. This study describes the influence of decreasing pH on sexual reproduction of the temperate non-zooxanthellate colonial scleractinian Astroides calycularis, transplanted in four sites along a natural pH gradient at the underwater volcanic crater of Panarea Island (Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy). The average pH values of each site (range: pHTS 8.07–7.40) match different scenarios of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for the end of the century. After 3 months under experimental conditions, the reproductive parameters of both oocytes and spermaries (abundance, gonadal index, and diameters) seem to be unaffected by low pH. However, a delay in spermary development in the pre-fertilization period and a persistence of mature oocytes in the fertilization period were observed in the most acidic site. Furthermore, no embryos were found in colonies from the two most acidic sites, suggesting a delay or an interruption of the fertilization process due to acidified conditions. These findings suggest a negative effect of low pH on A. calycularis sexual reproduction. However, long-term experiments, including the synergistic impact of pH and temperature, are needed to predict if this species will be able to adapt to climate change over the next century

    Incidence of salivary side effects after radioiodine treatment using a new specifically-designed questionnaire

    International audienceSialadenitis is one of the common complications of radioiodine treatment for thyroid malignancy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of radioiodine-induced sialadenitis and other side effects by using a self-administered questionnaire. From 1 January 2011 to 31 December 2012 all consecutive patients with a newly-established diagnosis of thyroid cancer who were treated with adjuvant radioiodine at La Timone University Hospital were sent a self-administered questionnaire on salivary complaints that had been specifically designed for this study. A total of 413 patients sent the questionnaire back, of whom 100 (24%) had experienced pain, 116 (28%) discomfort or swelling, and 147 (36%) dry mouth or xerostomia. This survey has highlighted the number of side effects of radioiodine treatment in a large group of patients and corroborates previous observations. Our new self-administered questionnaire may be useful to others for follow-up and research

    Smartphone-based colorimetric detection system for portable health tracking

    Colorimetric tests for at-home health monitoring became popular 50 years ago with the advent of the urinalysis test strips, due to their reduced costs, practicality, and ease of operation. However, developing digital systems that can interface these sensors in an efficient manner remains a challenge. Efforts have been put towards the development of portable optical readout systems, such as smartphones. However, their use in daily settings is still limited by their error-prone nature associated to optical noise from the ambient lighting, and their low sensitivity. Here, a smartphone application (Colourine) to readout colorimetric signals was developed on Android OS and tested on commercial urinalysis test strips for pH, proteins, and glucose detection. The novelty of this approach includes two features: a pre-calibration step where the user is asked to take a photo of the commercial reference chart, and a CIE-RGB-to-HSV color space transformation of the acquired data. These two elements allow the background noise given by environmental lighting to be minimized. The sensors were characterized in the ambient light range 100–400 lx, yielding a reliable output. Readouts were taken from urine strips in buffer solutions of pH (5.0–9.0 units), proteins (0–500 mg dL−1) and glucose (0–1000 mg dL−1), yielding a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.13 units (pH), 7.5 mg dL−1 (proteins) and 22 mg dL−1 (glucose), resulting in an average LOD decrease by about 2.8 fold compared to the visual method
