    Queering the grammar school boy: class, sexuality and authenticity in the works of Colin MacInnes and Ray Gosling

    In 1959 Colin MacInnes published the fourth in his series of social issue novels, Absolute Beginners. In it the unnamed protagonist is constructed as the iconic teenager, slick, cool, creative, with his ex-lover CrĂ©pe Suzette as the object of his art and as his Achilles heel. The novel is framed over one summer, against a backdrop of racial tension, which ultimately led the Boy towards adulthood. MacInnes’s protagonist has been dismissed as an emblem rather than a character, and MacInnes himself derided by George Melly as a perpetual teenager. However in this chapter, we will suggest that taken as a whole MacInnes’ work constructs a complex understanding of The Boy’s political possibilities intersecting with sexuality, gender, race and class. By integrating his novelistic work with his journalistic and activist writing, we will demonstrate the complexity of MacInnes’ Boy as an autonomous, queer political agent, embodied in the ultimate Boy; Ray Gosling. Gosling’s own writing becomes a lens through which to root historical understanding of teenagers and teenage cultures as sexual and racial constructs

    Carers of forensic mental health in-patients: what factors influence their satisfaction with services?

    Background Families are the main caring resource for service users with severe mental health problems. There has been limited work examining the needs of carers of people using forensic mental health services. Aims This study aimed to gain an understanding of carers satisfaction with services in forensic mental health inpatient settings. Method A survey design was used with 63 carers interviewed by telephone using a structured interview schedule. The data was analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively. Results Most carers were pleased with the service provided although some negative views were expressed with specific types of contact. Giving appropriate information to carers was strongly associated with satisfaction with the service being provided. Conclusions Carer satisfaction with forensic mental health services is likely to be higher with services that address carers’ information needs. New ways of providing this information may offer greater opportunities for working with carers

    Dungeons and Dragons is a tabletop roleplaying game which focuses heavily on character interaction and creating narratives. The current state of the game\u27s character creation process often bogs down new players in decisions related to game mechanics, not a character\u27s identity and personality. This independent study investigates the use of machine learning and natural language processing to make these decisions for a player based on their character\u27s backstory - the textual biography or description of a character. The study presents a collection of existing characters and uses these examples to create a family of models capable of predicting a character\u27s class, race, and attribute scores. The accuracy and limitations of these models are discussed, but they represent a first step in abstracting away some of the more tedious parts of character creation for new players

    Stages of development and injury: an epidemiological survey of young children presenting to an emergency department

    <p><b>Background:</b> The aim of our study was to use a local (Glasgow, west of Scotland) version of a Canadian injury surveillance programme (CHIRPP) to investigate the relationship between the developmental stage of young (pre-school) children, using age as a proxy, and the occurrence (incidence, nature, mechanism and location) of injuries presenting to a Scottish hospital emergency department, in an attempt to replicate the findings of a recent study in Kingston, Canada.</p> <p><b>Methods:</b> We used the Glasgow CHIRPP data to perform two types of analyses. First, we calculated injury rates for that part of the hospital catchment area for which reasonably accurate population denominators were available. Second, we examined detailed injury patterns, in terms of the circumstances, mechanisms, location and types of injury. We compared our findings with those of the Kingston researchers.</p> <p><b>Results:</b> A total of 17,793 injury records for children aged up to 7 years were identified over the period 1997–99. For 1997–2001, 6,188 were used to calculate rates in the west of the city only. Average annual age specific rates per 1000 children were highest in both males and females aged 12–35 months. Apart from the higher rates in Glasgow, the pattern of injuries, in terms of breakdown factors, mechanism, location, context, and nature of injury, were similar in Glasgow and Kingston.</p> <p><b>Conclusion:</b> We replicated in Glasgow, UK, the findings of a Canadian study demonstrating a correlation between the pattern of childhood injuries and developmental stage. Future research should take account of the need to enhance statistical power and explore the interaction between age and potential confounding variables such as socio-economic deprivation. Our findings highlight the importance of designing injury prevention interventions that are appropriate for specific stages of development in children.</p&gt

    Utilizing mHealth technology to increase HPV knowledge and HPV vaccine uptake in adolescents: A qualitative study

    This study sought to identify communication preferences for tailoring mHealth interventions on HPV and what information in messaging should be included to increase HPV education, vaccination and schedule adherence among youth. A convenient sample of 210 students answered an online survey. Participants were 18 – 25 years old (88%), female (85.6%), Caucasian (60%), never been diagnosed with HPV (92.9%) and completed all 3 doses (61.6%). Our respondents were initially hesitant to use SMS text messages and mobile apps for HPV primarily due to privacy, memory and data cost concerns but thought the personalization options would increase message saliency and information trustworthiness if sent by a healthcare provider. Healthcare providers should use the information to tailor HPV and sexual health interventions

    Characterisation of the Medipix3 detector for 60 and 80 keV electrons

    In this paper we report quantitative measurements of the imaging performance for the current generation of hybrid pixel detector, Medipix3, used as a direct electron detector. We have measured the modulation transfer function and detective quantum efficiency at beam energies of 60 and 80 keV. In single pixel mode, energy threshold values can be chosen to maximize either the modulation transfer function or the detective quantum efficiency, obtaining values near to, or exceeding those for a theoretical detector with square pixels. The Medipix3 charge summing mode delivers simultaneous, high values of both modulation transfer function and detective quantum efficiency. We have also characterized the detector response to single electron events and describe an empirical model that predicts the detector modulation transfer function and detective quantum efficiency based on energy threshold. Exemplifying our findings we demonstrate the Medipix3 imaging performance recording a fully exposed electron diffraction pattern at 24-bit depth together with images in single pixel and charge summing modes. Our findings highlight that for transmission electron microscopy performed at low energies (energies <100 keV) thick hybrid pixel detectors provide an advantageous architecture for direct electron imaging

    A pilot trial to assess the effect of a structured COMmunication approach on QUality Of Life in secure mental health settings (Comquol)

    Forensic mental health services have largely ignored examining users’ views on the nature of the service offered to them. Priebe and colleagues have developed a structured communication approach placing the service users’ perspective of their care at the heart of the discussions between service users and clinicians. This approach was used as the basis of a pilot study to evaluate a structured six-month approach designed to increase the quality of life of service users in secure settings. The specific objectives of the study were to: ‱ Establish the feasibility of the trial design as the basis for determining the viability of a large full-scale trial ‱ Determine the variability of the outcomes of interest ‱ Estimate the costs of the intervention ‱ If necessary, to refine the intervention following the study based upon the experiences of the clinicians and service users. A 36 month pilot trial was undertaken. Participants were recruited from 6 medium secure in–patient services with 55 patients in the intervention group and 57 in the control group as well as 92 nurses (47 in the intervention group and 45 in the control group). The intervention was based on the structured communication approach. Assessments took place prior to the intervention (baseline), at 6 months (post intervention) and at 12 months (follow-up). A review of the trial design indicated this approach was viable as the basis for a large full-scale trial; no refinements were needed to the intervention. The variability of the outcomes can be used start thinking about how large a full scale trial needs to be. A full trial would be able to estimate the effect of the intervention whereas this small pilot study cannot. The total cost of the intervention was £29,100 (£529 per patient) when assuming the intervention was part of the nurses normal work. Disturbed behaviour was also found to be costly since it was associated with significant use of NHS resources and police

    In our article we report first quantitative measurements of imaging performance for the current generation of hybrid pixel detector, Medipix3, as direct electron detector. Utilising beam energies of 60 & 80 keV, measurements of modulation transfer function (MTF) and detective quantum efficiency (DQE) have revealed that, in single pixel mode (SPM), energy threshold values can be chosen to maximize either the MTF or DQE, obtaining values near to, or even exceeding, those for an ideal detector. We have demonstrated that the Medipix3 charge summing mode (CSM) can deliver simultaneous, near ideal values of both MTF and DQE.     Study to assess the effect of a structured communication approach on quality of life in secure mental health settings (Comquol): study protocol for a pilot cluster randomized trial

    Background Forensic mental health services have largely ignored examining patients’ views on the nature of the service offered to them. A structured communication approach (DIALOG) has been developed with the aim of placing the patient’s perspective of their care at the heart of the discussions between patients and clinicians. The effectiveness of the structured communication approach in community mental health services has been demonstrated but no trial taken place in a secure psychiatric setting. This pilot study is evaluating a six-month intervention combining DIALOG with principles of Solution Focused Therapy (SFT) on quality of life in medium secure settings. Methods/design A cluster randomized controlled trial design is being employed to conduct a 36 months pilot study. Participants are recruited from six medium secure in–patient services with 48 patients in the intervention group and 48 in the control group. The intervention uses a structured communication approach. It comprises of six meetings between patient and nurse over held once a month a six month period. During each meeting patients rate their satisfaction with a range of life and treatment domains with responses displayed on a tablet. The rating is followed by a discussion on how to improve the current situation in those domains identified by the patient. Assessments take place prior to the intervention (baseline), at 6 months (post intervention) and at 12 months (follow-up). The primary outcome is self reported Quality of Life. Discussion: The study aims to a) establish the feasibility of the trial design as the basis for determining the viability of a large full-scale trial, b) determine the variability of the outcomes of interest (quality of life, levels of satisfaction, disturbance, ward climate, and engagement with services) c) estimate the costs of the intervention and d) refine the intervention following the outcome of the study based upon the experiences of the nurses and patients. The intervention allows patients to have a greater say in how they are treated and targets care on areas that patients identify as important to them. It is intended to establish systems that support meaningful patient (and carer) involvement and participation.     Autonomous three-dimensional formation flight for a swarm of unmanned aerial vehicles

    This paper investigates the development of a new guidance algorithm for a formation of unmanned aerial vehicles. Using the new approach of bifurcating potential fields, it is shown that a formation of unmanned aerial vehicles can be successfully controlled such that verifiable autonomous patterns are achieved, with a simple parameter switch allowing for transitions between patterns. The key contribution that this paper presents is in the development of a new bounded bifurcating potential field that avoids saturating the vehicle actuators, which is essential for real or safety-critical applications. To demonstrate this, a guidance and control method is developed, based on a six-degreeof-freedom linearized aircraft model, showing that, in simulation, three-dimensional formation flight for a swarm of unmanned aerial vehicles can be achieved
