    Published in the post-proceedings of TYPES but actually not presented orally to the conferenceInternational audienceIn Type Theory, definition by dependently-typed case analysis can be expressed by means of a set of equations — the semantic approach — or by an explicit pattern-matching construction — the syntactic approach. We aim at putting together the best of both approaches by extending the pattern-matching construction found in the Coq proof assistant in order to obtain the expressivity and flexibility of equation-based case analysis while remaining in a syntax-based setting, thus making dependently-typed programming more tractable in the Coq system. We provide a new rule that permits the omission of impossible cases, handles the propagation of inversion constraints, and allows to derive Streicher's K axiom. We show that subject reduction holds, and sketch a proof of relative consistency

    Dynamic conversion of solar generated heat to electricity

    The effort undertaken during this program led to the selection of the water-superheated steam (850 psig/900 F) crescent central receiver as the preferred concept from among 11 candidate systems across the technological spectrum of the dynamic conversion of solar generated heat to electricity. The solar power plant designs were investigated in the range of plant capacities from 100 to 1000 Mw(e). The investigations considered the impacts of plant size, collector design, feed-water temperature ratio, heat rejection equipment, ground cover, and location on solar power technical and economic feasibility. For the distributed receiver systems, the optimization studies showed that plant capacities less than 100 Mw(e) may be best. Although the size of central receiver concepts was not parametrically investigated, all indications are that the optimal plant capacity for central receiver systems will be in the range from 50 to 200 Mw(e). Solar thermal power plant site selection criteria and methodology were also established and used to evaluate potentially suitable sites. The result of this effort was to identify a site south of Inyokern, California, as typically suitable for a solar thermal power plant. The criteria used in the selection process included insolation and climatological characteristics, topography, and seismic history as well as water availability

    AbstractMitochondria with a ruptured outer membrane exhibited impaired import into this membrane of an outer membrane fusion protein containing the signal-anchor sequence of Mas70p. However, the Mas70p signal-anchor efficiently targeted and inserted the protein directly into exposed regions of the inner membrane. Import into the inner membrane was dependent on δψ and this dependence was due to the presence of the positively-charged amino acids located at positions 2, 7, and 9 of the signal-anchor. In contrast to wild-type signal-anchor, mutants lacking the positively-charged residues mediated import into the inner membrane in both the presence and absence of δψ. The results suggest two conclusions: (1) δψ-dependent import of the signal-anchor sequence was due exclusively to an effect of δψ on the positively-charged domain of the signal-anchor, rather than to an effect of δψ on a property of the inner membrane import machinery; (2) in the absence of δψ, the positively-charged domain of the signal-anchor prevented the otherwise import-competent signal-anchor from inserting into the membrane. This suggests that the positively-charged domain leads import across the inner membrane, and that dqi is required to vectorially clear this domain in order to allow the distal region of the signal-anchor to enter the translocation pathway. The implications of these findings on the mechanism of import into the mitochondrial inner membrane and matrix are discussed

    The Institute of Medicine noted that effective substance abuse treatment (SAT) programs integrate individual therapeutic approaches with transitional/ancillary services. In addition, research suggests that type of ownership impacts SAT services offered and that Medicaid plays a key role in SAT access. Data from the National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services for the years 2000 and 2002–2006 were used to examine relationships among SAT program Medicaid acceptance, program ownership, and transitional/ancillary service accessibility. Multivariate logistic regression models controlling for state- and program-level contextual factors were used to analyze the data. Nonprofit SAT programs were significantly more likely to offer transitional/ancillary services than for-profit programs. However, programs that accepted Medicaid, regardless of ownership, were significantly more likely to offer most transitional/ancillary services. The data suggest that Medicaid may play a significant role in offering key transitional/ancillary services related to successful treatment outcome, regardless of program ownership type
