Universality in nonadiabatic behaviour of classical actions in nonlinear models with separatrix crossings
We discuss dynamics of approximate adiabatic invariants in several nonlinear
models being related to physics of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC). We show
that nonadiabatic dynamics in Feshbach resonance passage, nonlinear
Landau-Zener (NLZ) tunnelling, and BEC tunnelling oscillations in a double-well
can be considered within a unifying approach based on the theory of separatrix
crossings. The separatrix crossing theory was applied previously to some
problems of classical mechanics, plasma physics and hydrodynamics, but has not
been used in the rapidly growing BEC-related field yet. We derive explicit
formulas for the change in the action in several models. Extensive numerical
calculations support the theory and demonstrate its universal character. We
also discovered a qualitatively new nonlinear phenomenon in a NLZ model which
we propose to call {\em separated adiabatic tunnelling}Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review E; Several misprints are

Stationary wave patterns generated by an impurity moving with supersonic velocity through a Bose-Einstein condensate
Formation of stationary 3D wave patterns generated by a small point-like
impurity moving through a Bose-Einstein condensate with supersonic velocity is
studied. Asymptotic formulae for a stationary far-field density distribution
are obtained. Comparison with three-dimensional numerical simulations
demonstrates that these formulae are accurate enough already at distances from
the obstacle equal to a few wavelengths.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure
Beyond Einstein-Cartan gravity: Quadratic torsion and curvature invariants with even and odd parity including all boundary terms
Recently, gravitational gauge theories with torsion have been discussed by an
increasing number of authors from a classical as well as from a quantum field
theoretical point of view. The Einstein-Cartan(-Sciama-Kibble) Lagrangian has
been enriched by the parity odd pseudoscalar curvature (Hojman, Mukku, and
Sayed) and by torsion square and curvature square pieces, likewise of even and
odd parity. (i) We show that the inverse of the so-called Barbero-Immirzi
parameter multiplying the pseudoscalar curvature, because of the topological
Nieh-Yan form, can only be appropriately discussed if torsion square pieces are
included. (ii) The quadratic gauge Lagrangian with both parities, proposed by
Obukhov et al. and Baekler et al., emerges also in the framework of Diakonov et
al.(2011). We establish the exact relations between both approaches by applying
the topological Euler and Pontryagin forms in a Riemann-Cartan space expressed
for the first time in terms of irreducible pieces of the curvature tensor.
(iii) Only in a Riemann-Cartan spacetime, that is, in a spacetime with torsion,
parity violating terms can be brought into the gravitational Lagrangian in a
straightforward and natural way. Accordingly, Riemann-Cartan spacetime is a
natural habitat for chiral fermionic matter fields.Comment: 12 page latex, as version 2 an old file was submitted by mistake,

Swiss clinical practice guidelines on field cancerization of the skin.
Actinic keratosis (AK) affects millions of people worldwide, and its prevalence continues to increase. AK lesions are caused by chronic ultraviolet radiation exposure, and the presence of two or more AK lesions along with photodamage should raise the consideration of a diagnosis of field cancerization. Effective treatment of individual lesions as well as field cancerization is essential for good long-term outcomes. The Swiss Registry of Actinic Keratosis Treatment (REAKT) Working Group has developed clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of field cancerization in patients who present with AK. These guidelines are intended to serve as a resource for physicians as to the most appropriate treatment and management of AK and field cancerization based on current evidence and the combined practical experience of the authors. Treatment of AK and field cancerization should be driven by consideration of relevant patient, disease, and treatment factors, and appropriate treatment decisions will differ from patient to patient. Prevention measures and screening recommendations are discussed, and special considerations related to management of immunocompromised patients are provided
Determination of electromagnetic medium from the Fresnel surface
We study Maxwell's equations on a 4-manifold where the electromagnetic medium
is described by an antisymmetric -tensor . In this setting,
the Tamm-Rubilar tensor density determines a polynomial surface of fourth order
in each cotangent space. This surface is called the Fresnel surface and acts as
a generalisation of the light-cone determined by a Lorentz metric; the Fresnel
surface parameterises electromagnetic wave-speed as a function of direction.
Favaro and Bergamin have recently proven that if has only a principal
part and if the Fresnel surface of coincides with the light cone for a
Lorentz metric , then is proportional to the Hodge star operator of
. That is, under additional assumptions, the Fresnel surface of
determines the conformal class of . The purpose of this paper is
twofold. First, we provide a new proof of this result using Gr\"obner bases.
Second, we describe a number of cases where the Fresnel surface does not
determine the conformal class of the original -tensor . For
example, if is invertible we show that and have
the same Fresnel surfaces.Comment: 23 pages, 1 figur
Near-adiabatic parameter changes in correlated systems: Influence of the ramp protocol on the excitation energy
We study the excitation energy for slow changes of the hopping parameter in
the Falicov-Kimball model with nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory. The
excitation energy vanishes algebraically for long ramp times with an exponent
that depends on whether the ramp takes place within the metallic phase, within
the insulating phase, or across the Mott transition line. For ramps within
metallic or insulating phase the exponents are in agreement with a perturbative
analysis for small ramps. The perturbative expression quite generally shows
that the exponent depends explicitly on the spectrum of the system in the
initial state and on the smoothness of the ramp protocol. This explains the
qualitatively different behavior of gapless (e.g., metallic) and gapped (e.g.,
Mott insulating) systems. For gapped systems the asymptotic behavior of the
excitation energy depends only on the ramp protocol and its decay becomes
faster for smoother ramps. For gapless systems and sufficiently smooth ramps
the asymptotics are ramp-independent and depend only on the intrinsic spectrum
of the system. However, the intrinsic behavior is unobservable if the ramp is
not smooth enough. This is relevant for ramps to small interaction in the
fermionic Hubbard model, where the intrinsic cubic fall-off of the excitation
energy cannot be observed for a linear ramp due to its kinks at the beginning
and the end.Comment: 24 pages, 6 figure
An assessment of Evans' unified field theory I
Evans developed a classical unified field theory of gravitation and
electromagnetism on the background of a spacetime obeying a Riemann-Cartan
geometry. This geometry can be characterized by an orthonormal coframe theta
and a (metric compatible) Lorentz connection Gamma. These two potentials yield
the field strengths torsion T and curvature R. Evans tried to infuse
electromagnetic properties into this geometrical framework by putting the
coframe theta to be proportional to four extended electromagnetic potentials A;
these are assumed to encompass the conventional Maxwellian potential in a
suitable limit. The viable Einstein-Cartan(-Sciama-Kibble) theory of gravity
was adopted by Evans to describe the gravitational sector of his theory.
Including also the results of an accompanying paper by Obukhov and the author,
we show that Evans' ansatz for electromagnetism is untenable beyond repair both
from a geometrical as well as from a physical point of view. As a consequence,
his unified theory is obsolete.Comment: 39 pages of latex, modified because of referee report, mistakes and

On quantum mean-field models and their quantum annealing
This paper deals with fully-connected mean-field models of quantum spins with
p-body ferromagnetic interactions and a transverse field. For p=2 this
corresponds to the quantum Curie-Weiss model (a special case of the
Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model) which exhibits a second-order phase transition,
while for p>2 the transition is first order. We provide a refined analytical
description both of the static and of the dynamic properties of these models.
In particular we obtain analytically the exponential rate of decay of the gap
at the first-order transition. We also study the slow annealing from the pure
transverse field to the pure ferromagnet (and vice versa) and discuss the
effect of the first-order transition and of the spinodal limit of metastability
on the residual excitation energy, both for finite and exponentially divergent
annealing times. In the quantum computation perspective this quantity would
assess the efficiency of the quantum adiabatic procedure as an approximation
algorithm.Comment: 44 pages, 23 figure
Classical Dynamics of the Time-Dependent Elliptical Billiard
In this work we study the nonlinear dynamics of the static and the driven
ellipse. In the static case, we find numerically an asymptotical algebraic
decay for the escape of an ensemble of non-interacting particles through a
small hole due to the integrable structure of the phase space of the system.
Furthermore, for a certain hole position a saturation value in the decay that
can be tuned arbitrarily by varying the eccentricity of the ellipse is observed
and explained. When applying harmonic boundary oscillations this saturation
value caused by librator type orbits is gradually destroyed via two fundamental
processes which are discussed in detail. As a result, an amplitude dependent
emission rate is obtained in the long time behavior of the decay, suggesting
that the driven elliptical billiard can be used as a controllable source of
particles
Quadratic-nonlinear Landau-Zener transition for association of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate with inter-particle elastic interactions included
We study the strong coupling limit of a quadratic-nonlinear Landau-Zener
problem for coherent photo- and magneto-association of cold atoms taking into
account the atom-atom, atom-molecule, and molecule-molecule elastic scattering.
Using an exact third-order nonlinear differential equation for the molecular
state probability, we develop a variational approach which enables us to
construct a highly accurate and simple analytic approximation describing the
time dynamics of the coupled atom-molecule system. We show that the
approximation describing time evolution of the molecular state probability can
be written as a sum of two distinct terms; the first one, being a solution to a
limit first-order nonlinear equation, effectively describes the process of the
molecule formation while the second one, being a scaled solution to the linear
Landau-Zener problem (but now with negative effective Landau-Zener parameter as
long as the strong coupling regime is considered), corresponds to the remaining
oscillations which come up when the process of molecule formation is over.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Eur. Phys. J.
