    SEOM guidelines on hydroelectrolytic disorders

    Hydroelectrolytic disorders are one of the most common metabolic complications in cancer patients. Although often metabolic alterations affecting various ions are part of the manifestations of the oncological disease, even in the form of paraneoplastic syndrome, we must not forget that very often, these disorders could be caused by various drugs, including some of the antineoplastic agents most frequently used, such as platin derivatives or some biologics. These guidelines review major management of diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of the most common alterations of sodium, calcium, magnesium and potassium in cancer patients. Aside from life-sustaining treatments, we have reviewed the role of specific drug treatments aimed at correcting some of these disorders, such as intravenous bisphosphonates for hypercalcemia or V2 receptor antagonists in the management of syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion-related hyponatremia

    Presencia de bacterias asociadas a nieve marina en arrecifes influenciados por escorrentía continental del Caribe colombiano: primer acercamiento

    Part of the degradation of coral reefs has been attributed to the effect of freshwater inputs with nutrients and fine-grain sediments. These conditions favor the formation of muddy marine snow which transports great bacterial loads that can be pathogenic to corals. Therefore, the presence of bacteria associated to muddy marine snow in a reef zone of the Colombian Caribbean in a distance gradient to the mouth of the Dique Channel (Cartagena), was done. Using molecular techniques like PCR-DGGE, low species richness was registered by means of seven phylogroups possibly representing seven different species. The number of species differed according to the site, but no relation with the proximity to source point of run-off was found. As a pioneer study, it serves as a starting point for studies on reefs exposed to run-off.Parte del deterioro de los arrecifes de coral se atribuye al efecto del aporte de agua dulce cargada de nutrientes y sedimentos finos. Estas condiciones favorecen la formación de nieve marina lodosa que transporta gran carga de bacterias que pueden ser patógenos de corales. Por lo anterior, se estudió la presencia de bacterias asociadas a nieve marina lodosa en una zona arrecifal del Caribe colombiano en un gradiente de distancia a la desembocadura del canal del Dique (Cartagena). Por medio de técnicas moleculares PCR-DGGE, se registró baja riqueza, con bandas representativas de siete bacterias diferentes. El número de especies varió según el sitio, pero no hubo relación con la cercanía a la fuente de escorrentía. Como estudio pionero, sirve como punto de partida para estudios en arrecifes del Caribe colombiano impactados por escorrentía.&nbsp

    Econometric analysis of the industrial growth determinants in Colombia

    An econometric study is carried out using a panel data model with fixed effects to identify the industrial development determinants in Colombia during the term 2005–2015. The database used in the study corresponds to World Bank and the Colombian state. The determinants of industrial growth identified at the theoretical level that allow the enhancement of productive capacities to face foreign competition in Colombia are: innovation; networks of innovations and knowledge among companies and organizations; the interest rate; the capital-product ratio, the unit labor cost; and the exchange rate. The amount invested in scientific, technological and innovation activities by industrial group is the only variable that is not significant in the model

    Citescore of publications indexed in Scopus: an implementation of panel data

    This article is intended to establish the variables that explain the behavior of the CiteScore metrics from 2014 to 2016, for journals indexed in Scopus in 2017. With this purpose, journals with a CiteScore value greater than 11 were selected in any of the periods, that is to say, 133 journals. For the data analysis, a model of standard corrected errors for panel was used, from which a coefficient of determination of 77% was obtained. From the results, it was possible to state that journals of arts and humanities; business; administration and accounting; economics, econometrics, and finance; immunology and microbiology; medicine and social sciences, have the greatest impact.Corporación Universitaria Minuto de Dios, Fundación Universitaria Konrad Lorenz, Universidad de La Habana, Universidad de la Costa

    Polinización por abejas en cultivos promisorios de Colombia

    "El presente libro hace parte de los resultados del proyecto de investigación “Valoración de los servicios de polinización por abejas en algunos frutales promisorios de Colombia, financiado por COLCIENCIAS y la Universidad Nacional de Colombia. Seleccionamos tres frutales promisorios, es decir aquellos cultivados y aprovechados en forma local, y que a pesar de su importancia son poco conocidos: Agraz (Vaccinium meridionale), fuente de antioxidantes; guayaba chamba (Campomanesia lineatifolia) fruto aromático y delicado aprovechado profusamente en Miraflores (Boyacá) y Cholupa (Passiflora maliformis), prima de la granadilla y el maracuyá, pero también poco conocida fuera de Rivera (Huila). Gracias a esta investigación aprendimos que las abejas son los polinizadores importantes de estos tres frutales. Según la estrategia reproductiva del agraz se estima que el 65% de la producción de frutos depende de la polinización por abejas. Por su parte, la chamba es una especie xenógama obligada y los polinizares son esenciales para la formación de frutos y semillas. En cuanto a la cholupa los ensayos de polinización demuestran que la dependencia de las abejas polinizadoras es alta, ya que sin la acción de estos vectores de polen la producción se reduce un 77.7%. Especies de Melipona, Bombus, Xylocopa y Apis mellifera son algunos de los polinizadores importantes de estas especies vegetales.     Toxicity of wine effluents and assessment of a depuration system for their control: assay with tadpoles of Rhinella arenarum (BUFONIDAE)

    We evaluated the toxicity of the winery effluent and the efficiency of a symbiotic depuration system by means an experiment with Rhinella arenarum tadpoles. The studied effluent was taken from warehouses during the cleaning season. These effluents subsequently subjected to the purification treatment under evaluation. The effluent samples differentiated into two treatment levels: “raw” where the effluent was evaluated with field conditions and “treated” where the effluent was previously filtered with the symbiotic depuration system. The results of the bioassays compared with the physicochemical parameters determined in the effluent samples. The lethal response had a clear-cut correspondence with the effluent quality assessed utilizing physicochemical parameters. In all cases, dilution of the samples resulted in a significant reduction of their toxicity. It concluded that (a) winery effluents could be harmful to tadpoles of R. arenarum, (b) the symbiotic purification system used to treat wine effluents it would produce a significant reduction in the contaminant levels of the effluent. However, this reduction in contaminant levels does not provide sufficient safety for the release of the effluents into the environment.Fil: Navas Romero, Ana Laura.     Animal models for COVID-19

    Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the aetiological agent of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), an emerging respiratory infection caused by the introduction of a novel coronavirus into humans late in 2019 (first detected in Hubei province, China). As of 18 September 2020, SARS-CoV-2 has spread to 215 countries, has infected more than 30 million people and has caused more than 950,000 deaths. As humans do not have pre-existing immunity to SARS-CoV-2, there is an urgent need to develop therapeutic agents and vaccines to mitigate the current pandemic and to prevent the re-emergence of COVID-19. In February 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) assembled an international panel to develop animal models for COVID-19 to accelerate the testing of vaccines and therapeutic agents. Here we summarize the findings to date and provides relevant information for preclinical testing of vaccine candidates and therapeutic agents for COVID-19
