    Quantum transport through a double Aharonov-Bohm-interferometer in the presence of Andreev reflection

    Quantum transport through a double Aharonov-Bohm-interferometer in the presence of Andreev reflection is investigated in terms of the nonequilibrium Green function method with which the reflection current is obtained. Tunable Andreev reflection probabilities depending on the interdot coupling strength and magnetic flux as well are analysised in detail. It is found that the oscillation period of the reflection probability with respect to the magnetic flux for the double interferometer depends linearly on the ratio of two parts magnetic fluxes n, i.e. 2(n+1)pi, while that of a single interferometer is 2pi. The coupling strength not only affects the height and the linewidth of Andreev reflection current peaks vs gate votage but also shifts the peak positions. It is furthermore demonstrated that the Andreev reflection current peaks can be tuned by the magnetic fluxes.Comment: 13 pages, 12 figur

    Treatment patterns and outcomes in patients with Pancoast tumors: a national cancer database analysis

    Background: Pancoast tumors represent 5% of non-small cell lung cancers. Complete surgical resection and no lymph node involvement are important positive prognostic factors. Previous literature has identified neoadjuvant chemoradiation treatment, followed by surgical resection, as the standard of care. But many institutions choose upfront surgery. Our goal was to identify the treatment patterns and outcomes in patients with node-negative Pancoast tumors using the National Cancer Database (NCDB). Methods: The NCDB was queried from 2004 through 2017 to identify all patients who had undergone surgery for a Pancoast tumor. Treatment patterns, including the percentage of patients who received neoadjuvant treatment, were recorded. Logistic regression and survival analyses were used to determine outcomes based on different treatment patterns. Secondary analyses were performed on the cohort who received upfront surgery. Results: A total of 2,910 patients were included in the study. Overall 30- and 90-day mortality were 3% and 7% respectively. Only 25% (717/2,910) of the group received neoadjuvant chemoradiation treatment prior to surgery. Patients who received neoadjuvant chemoradiation treatment experienced significantly improved 90-day survival (P\u3c0.01) and overall survival (P\u3c0.01). When analyzing the cohort who received upfront surgery, there was a statistically significant difference in survival based on adjuvant treatment pattern (P\u3c0.01). Patients in this group who received adjuvant chemoradiation had the best survival, whereas patients who received adjuvant radiation only or no treatment had the worst outcomes. Conclusions: Patients with Pancoast tumors receive neoadjuvant chemoradiation treatment in only a quarter of cases nationally. Patients who received neoadjuvant chemoradiation treatment had improved survival compared to patients who had upfront surgery. Similarly, when surgery is performed first, adjuvant chemoradiation treatment improved survival compared to other adjuvant strategies. These results suggest underutilization of neoadjuvant treatment for patients with node-negative Pancoast tumors. Future studies with a more clearly defined cohort are needed to assess the treatment patterns being utilized on patients with node-negative Pancoast tumors. It will be beneficial to see whether neoadjuvant treatment for Pancoast tumors has increased in recent years

    Scaling of Anisotropic Flows and Nuclear Equation of State in Intermediate Energy Heavy Ion Collisions

    Elliptic flow (v2v_2) and hexadecupole flow (v4v_4) of light clusters have been studied in details for 25 MeV/nucleon 86^{86}Kr + 124^{124}Sn at large impact parameters by Quantum Molecular Dynamics model with different potential parameters. Four parameter sets which include soft or hard equation of state (EOS) with/without symmetry energy term are used. Both number-of-nucleon (AA) scaling of the elliptic flow versus transverse momentum (ptp_t) and the scaling of v4/A2v_4/A^{2} versus (pt/A)2(p_t/A)^2 have been demonstrated for the light clusters in all above calculation conditions. It was also found that the ratio of v4/v22v_4/{v_2}^2 keeps a constant of 1/2 which is independent of ptp_t for all the light fragments. By comparisons among different combinations of EOS and symmetry potential term, the results show that the above scaling behaviors are solid which do not depend the details of potential, while the strength of flows is sensitive to EOS and symmetry potential term.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    Total Reaction Cross Section in an Isospin-Dependent Quantum Molecular Dynamics (IDQMD) Model

    The isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics (IDQMD) model is used to study the total reaction cross section σR\sigma_R. The energy-dependent Pauli volumes of neutrons and protons have been discussed and introduced into the IDQMD calculation to replace the widely used energy-independent Pauli volumes. The modified IDQMD calculation can reproduce the experimental σR\sigma_R well for both stable and exotic nuclei induced reactions. Comparisons of the calculated σR\sigma_R induced by 11Li^{11}Li with different initial density distributions have been performed. It is shown that the calculation by using the experimentally deduced density distribution with a long tail can fit the experimental excitation function better than that by using the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock calculated density without long tails. It is also found that σR\sigma_R at high energy is sensitive to the long tail of density distribution.Comment: 4 page, 4 fig

    Strong and Electromagnetic Decays of X(1835) as a Baryonium State

    With the assumption that the recently observed X(1835) is a baryonium state we have studied the strong decays of X(1835)η()π+π,η()π0π0X(1835) \to \eta^{(\prime)} \pi^+ \pi^-, \eta^{(\prime)} \pi^0 \pi^0 and the electromagnetic decay of X(1835)2γX(1835) \to 2\gamma in the framework of effective Lagrangian formalism. In the present investigation we have included the contributions from the iso-singlet light scalar resonances but we have not included the isospin violating effect. Our result for the strong decay of X(1835)ηπ+πX(1835) \to \eta^{\prime} \pi^+ \pi^- is smaller than the observed data. The decay width for the radiative decay of X(1835)2γX(1835) \to 2\gamma is consistent with the assumption that it decays through the glueball. In addition, the width for the strong decay of X(1835)ηπ+πX(1835) \to \eta \pi^+ \pi^- is larger than that of the strong decay of X(1835)ηπ+πX(1835) \to \eta^{\prime} \pi^+ \pi^- due to the large phase space and coupling constant gNNˉηg_{N\bar{N}\eta}. From our investigation, it is not possible to interpret X(1835) as a baryonium.Comment: Corrected typo

    Fish-T1K (Transcriptomes of 1,000 Fishes) Project: Large-Scale Transcriptome Data for Fish Evolution Studies

    Ray-finned fishes (Actinopterygii) represent more than 50 % of extant vertebrates and are of great evolutionary, ecologic and economic significance, but they are relatively underrepresented in ‘omics studies. Increased availability of transcriptome data for these species will allow researchers to better understand changes in gene expression, and to carry out functional analyses. An international project known as the “Transcriptomes of 1,000 Fishes” (Fish-T1K) project has been established to generate RNA-seq transcriptome sequences for 1,000 diverse species of ray-finned fishes. The first phase of this project has produced transcriptomes from more than 180 ray-finned fishes, representing 142 species and covering 51 orders and 109 families. Here we provide an overview of the goals of this project and the work done so far

    Noise smoothing for VR equipment in quaternions

    Smooth motion generation is an important issue in the computer animation and virtual reality (VR) area. In general, the motion of a rigid body consists of translation and orientation. The former is described by a space curve in 3-dimensional Euclidean space, while the latter is represented by a curve in the unit quaternion space. Although there are well-known techniques for smoothing the translation curve in the Euclidean space, few results have been reported for smoothing motion as a whole.     Establishment of a Reverse Genetics System for Studying Human Bocavirus in Human Airway Epithelia

    Human bocavirus 1 (HBoV1) has been identified as one of the etiological agents of wheezing in young children with acute respiratory-tract infections. In this study, we have obtained the sequence of a full-length HBoV1 genome (including both termini) using viral DNA extracted from a nasopharyngeal aspirate of an infected patient, cloned the full-length HBoV1 genome, and demonstrated DNA replication, encapsidation of the ssDNA genome, and release of the HBoV1 virions from human embryonic kidney 293 cells. The HBoV1 virions generated from this cell line-based production system exhibits a typical icosahedral structure of approximately 26 nm in diameter, and is capable of productively infecting polarized primary human airway epithelia (HAE) from the apical surface. Infected HAE showed hallmarks of lung airway-tract injury, including disruption of the tight junction barrier, loss of cilia and epithelial cell hypertrophy. Notably, polarized HAE cultured from an immortalized airway epithelial cell line, CuFi-8 (originally derived from a cystic fibrosis patient), also supported productive infection of HBoV1. Thus, we have established a reverse genetics system and generated the first cell line-based culture system for the study of HBoV1 infection, which will significantly advance the study of HBoV1 replication and pathogenesis.This work was supported by PHS R21 grant AI085236 and PHS R01 grant AI070723 from NIAID (J Qiu) and PHS R01 grant HL108902 from NHLBI (J Engelhardt)
