Multilevel Preconditioning of Discontinuous-Galerkin Spectral Element Methods, Part I: Geometrically Conforming Meshes
This paper is concerned with the design, analysis and implementation of
preconditioning concepts for spectral Discontinuous Galerkin discretizations of
elliptic boundary value problems. While presently known techniques realize a
growth of the condition numbers that is logarithmic in the polynomial degrees
when all degrees are equal and quadratic otherwise, our main objective is to
realize full robustness with respect to arbitrarily large locally varying
polynomial degrees degrees, i.e., under mild grading constraints condition
numbers stay uniformly bounded with respect to the mesh size and variable
degrees. The conceptual foundation of the envisaged preconditioners is the
auxiliary space method. The main conceptual ingredients that will be shown in
this framework to yield "optimal" preconditioners in the above sense are
Legendre-Gauss-Lobatto grids in connection with certain associated anisotropic
nested dyadic grids as well as specially adapted wavelet preconditioners for
the resulting low order auxiliary problems. Moreover, the preconditioners have
a modular form that facilitates somewhat simplified partial realizations. One
of the components can, for instance, be conveniently combined with domain
decomposition, at the expense though of a logarithmic growth of condition

Cooperative Learning Approach to Delivering Professional Modules to Bachelor and Master Students: TPU Experience
Modern tendencies in engineering education set certain requirements on the competences to be obtained. To enable a future engineer to work at a highly competitive level and become an internationally recognized specialist, they must possess advanced English speaking and writing skills. At present most universities introduce educational programs that attract bright domestic and international students to ensure that they are in demand at the global market. The Strategic Program on Competitiveness Enhancement of National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University proposes that modules of professional training should be developed and delivered in English as a language of instruction so that the quality of teaching could be raised. To develop their own approaches to teaching, improve their language proficiency and develop courses and their elements in English, TPU teachers are to meet these challenging requirements and design course documentation and teaching aids, and engage modern teaching approaches in order to ensure high quality work with student groups which are often mixed in their abilities in both professional subjects and language proficiency levels. This paper addresses the course "Professional Training in English" which was developed upon completion of the joint program of TPU and the University of Southampton "Delivering through the Medium of English" and has successfully been delivered to bachelor students with the major "Oil and Gas Engineering" using the cooperative learning approach. Sex differences in cardiovascular responses to orthostatic challenge in healthy older persons: A pilot study
Background Premenopausal women show a higher incidence of orthostatic hypotension than age-matched men, but there are limited data available on sex differences in cardiovascular responses to orthostatic challenge in healthy older persons. We investigated sex differences in hemodynamic and autonomic responses to orthostatic challenge in healthy older males and females. Materials and methods Fourteen older healthy women and 10 age-matched men performed a sit-to-stand test (5 min of sitting followed by 5 min of standing). A Task Force® Monitor continuously measured the following beat-to-beat hemodynamic parameters: heart rate, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, mean blood pressure, stroke index, cardiac index, and total peripheral resistance index. Cardiac autonomic activity, low-frequency (LF: 0.04–0.15 Hz) normalized (LFnuRRI) and high-frequency (HF: 0.15–0.4 Hz) normalized (HFnuRRI) components, and the ratio between LF and HF power (LF/HF) were calculated using power spectral analysis of heart rate variability. Results Across all hemodynamic parameters, there were no significant differences between the sexes at baseline and during standing. LFnuRRI (median: 70.2 vs. 52.3, p < 0.05) and LF/HF ratio (median: 2.4 vs. 1.1, p < 0.05) were significantly higher, whereas HFnuRRI (median: 29.8 vs. 47.7, p < 0.05) was lower among women at baseline. All other heart rate variability measures did not differ between the sexes. Conclusions The data indicate that older women showed higher sympathetic and lower parasympathetic activity at rest compared to age-matched men. These results are contradictory to the observations from previous studies, which showed a reduced sympathetic and enhanced parasympathetic activity in women in all ages. Further studies are required to determine the underlying mechanisms contributing to higher incidence of orthostatic hypotension in older females

Methodologies for the analysis of pesticides and pharmaceuticals in sediments and plant tissue
Eco-technologies that utilize natural processes involving wetland vegetation, soil and their associated microbial assemblages are increasingly used for the removal of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) from polluted water. However, information on removal processes in these systems is not always available, possibly due to the lack of simple and robust methodologies for analysis of CECs in complex matrices such as sediment and plant tissue. The aim of the present study was to use a simple and fast procedure based on ultrasonic extraction (USE) and reduced clean-up procedures to analyse 8 pesticides and 9 pharmaceuticals by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with diode array detector.
The established methods demonstrated suitable sensitivity and reliability, and proved fit-for-purpose in quantifying multiple classes of pesticides and pharmaceuticals. For sediments, extraction with methanol/acetone (95:5, v/v) followed by a simple evaporation to dryness and redissolution (water:methanol 50:50) provided acceptable recovery (50 - 101%) and RSD 64%) with RSD < 22% determined using different types of wetland plants.

Phosphorus removal in constructed wetlands: can suitable alternative media be identified
Abstract Removal of phosphorous in constructed wetlands is limited by the capacity of the media to adsorb, bind or precipitate the incoming P. To enhance P removal and the life span of constructed wetlands the approach might be to use natural sands rich in calcium or iron, to use an alternative 'artificial' medium with high P-binding capacity, or to establish external P-binding filters after the wetland. Our studies focused on the evaluation of calcium-rich materials potentially useful as P-binding media. The materials tested included calcite products, natural sands and seashells. Tests included assessment of physical and chemical properties of the materials, extractions in P-spiked water at different P concentrations to determine P-binding equilibrium isotherms, and column experiments. In addition, full-scale tests were performed with calcite in an external filter. The result showed that equilibrium isotherm is an indicator of the potential P-sorption capacity of the media, although the value is of limited application for the determination of the binding capacity in full-scale systems. The columns showed that the materials do bind phosphorus. However, the binding capacities are still insufficient for the establishment of external P-removal filter; the volumes of the filters would be too large to be of practical use
Intrinsic quadrupole moment of the nucleon
We address the question of the intrinsic quadrupole moment Q_0 of the nucleon
in various models. All models give a positive intrinsic quadrupole moment for
the proton. This corresponds to a prolate deformation. We also calculate the
intrinsic quadrupole moment of the Delta(1232). All our models lead to a
negative intrinsic quadrupole moment of the Delta corresponding to an oblate

Treatment of Low-flow Vascular Malformations by Ultrasound-guided Sclerotherapy with Polidocanol Foam: 24 Cases and Literature Review
AbstractObjectivesTreatment by sclerotherapy has been suggested as a first-line treatment of low-flow vascular malformations. This study reports our experience in treating low-flow vascular malformations by ultrasound-guided sclerosis with polidocanol foam at the Vascular Medicine Department in Grenoble, France.DesignRetrospective single-centre consecutive series.Materials and methodsBetween January 2006 and December 2009, we analysed the complete records of patients with symptomatic low-flow vascular malformations of venous, lymphatic or complex type (Klippel–Trenaunay syndrome, KTS) treated by ultrasound-guided sclerosis. The therapeutic indication was always validated by the Consultative Committee for vascular malformations of the University Hospital of Grenoble. All vascular malformations were classified according to the Hamburg Classification. The sclerosing agent was polidocanol used as foam.ResultsA total of 24 patients between 7 and 78 years were treated (19 venous malformations, three KTSs and two venous-lymphatic malformations). The concentrations of polidocanol used ranged from 0.25% to 3%. The average number of sessions was 2.3 (1–16). After a median follow-up at 5 months after the last session, 23 out of 24 patients reported a decrease in pain; in nine cases (37.5%), over 50% reduction in size was observed, and in 14 cases (58.3%), a reduction of less than 50% of the original size was obtained. Two minor side effects were reported.ConclusionsTreatment by ultrasound-guided sclerosis using polidocanol foam seems to be well tolerated and can improve the symptoms of low-flow malformations without the risks of more aggressive sclerosing agents, such as ethanol
