Resilience of multi-photon entanglement under losses
We analyze the resilience under photon loss of the bi-partite entanglement
present in multi-photon states produced by parametric down-conversion. The
quantification of the entanglement is made possible by a symmetry of the states
that persists even under polarization-independent losses. We examine the
approach of the states to the set of states with a positive partial transpose
as losses increase, and calculate the relative entropy of entanglement. We find
that some bi-partite distillable entanglement persists for arbitrarily high
losses.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, title changed, minor typographic errors correcte
Experimental Quantum Cloning of Single Photons
Although perfect copying of unknown quantum systems is forbidden by the laws
of quantum mechanics, approximate cloning is possible. A natural way of
realizing quantum cloning of photons is by stimulated emission. In this context
the fundamental quantum limit to the quality of the clones is imposed by the
unavoidable presence of spontaneous emission. In our experiment a single input
photon stimulates the emission of additional photons from a source based on
parametric down-conversion. This leads to the production of quantum clones with
near optimal fidelity. We also demonstrate universality of the copying
procedure by showing that the same fidelity is achieved for arbitrary input
states.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Dynamics of Entanglement Transfer Through Multipartite Dissipative Systems
We study the dynamics of entanglement transfer in a system composed of two
initially correlated three-level atoms, each located in a cavity interacting
with its own reservoir. Instead of tracing out reservoir modes to describe the
dynamics using the master equation approach, we consider explicitly the
dynamics of the reservoirs. In this situation, we show that the entanglement is
completely transferred from atoms to reservoirs. Although the cavities mediate
this entanglement transfer, we show that under certain conditions, no
entanglement is found in cavities throughout the dynamics. Considering the
entanglement dynamics of interacting and non-interacting bipartite subsystems,
we found time windows where the entanglement can only flow through interacting
subsystems, depending on the system parameters.Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures, publishe in Physical Review
Quantum filter for non-local polarization properties of photonic qubits
We present an optical filter that transmits photon pairs only if they share
the same horizontal or vertical polarization, without decreasing the quantum
coherence between these two possibilities. Various applications for
entanglement manipulations and multi-photon qubits are discussed.Comment: 7 pages, including one figure, short discussion of error sources

Opto-mechanical micro-macro entanglement
We propose to create and detect opto-mechanical entanglement by storing one
component of an entangled state of light in a mechanical resonator and then
retrieving it. Using micro-macro entanglement of light as recently demonstrated
experimentally, one can then create opto-mechanical entangled states where the
components of the superposition are macroscopically different. We apply this
general approach to two-mode squeezed states where one mode has undergone a
large displacement. Based on an analysis of the relevant experimental
imperfections, the scheme appears feasible with current technology.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, to appear in PRL, submission coordinated with

Cross-border investment expenditure spillovers in European gas infrastructure
This work is part of the EDGaR project âOperating the gas transmission system: institutional design challenges and solutionsâ. This research has been financed by the Energy Delta Gas Research (EDGaR) program. EDGaR is co-financed by the Northern Netherlands Provinces, the European Fund for Regional Development, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation and the Province of Groningen. We investigate the implications of an integrated vis-Ă -vis a national perspective regarding investment in natural gas infrastructure. In particular, we analyze cross-border spillovers related to the investment expenditure of five Western European countries. We develop a practical approach to estimate such cross-border investment expenditure spillovers using a multi-regional input-output model. We find that international spillovers are generally larger for employment compensation compared to capital compensation and that the spillovers are unevenly distributed among the countries and the types of labor. Both high-skilled and medium-skilled labor is impacted most in the country where the investments take place, whereas low-skilled labor is mostly generated outside the EU. We argue that an integrated European gas infrastructure investment policy is to be recommended.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Signature of the Overhauser field on the coherent spin dynamics of donor-bound electron in a single CdTe quantum well
We have studied the coherent spin dynamics in an oblique magnetic field of
electrons localized on donors and placed in the middle of a single CdTe quantum
well, by using a time-resolved optical technique: the photo-induced Faraday
rotation. We showed that this dynamics is affected by a weak Overhauser field
created via the hyperfine interaction of optically spin-polarized donor-bound
electrons with the surrounding nuclear isotopes carrying non-zero spins. We
have measured this nuclear field, which is on the order of a few mT and can
reach a maximum experimental value of 9.4 mT. This value represents 13 % of the
maximal nuclear polarization, and corresponds also to 13 % of maximal
electronic polarization.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure
Towards quantum superpositions of a mirror
We propose a scheme for creating quantum superposition states involving of
order atoms via the interaction of a single photon with a tiny
mirror. This mirror, mounted on a high-quality mechanical oscillator, is part
of a high-finesse optical cavity which forms one arm of a Michelson
interferometer. By observing the interference of the photon only, one can study
the creation and decoherence of superpositions involving the mirror. All
experimental requirements appear to be within reach of current technology.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
