Gamow Shell Model Description of Neutron-Rich Nuclei
This work presents the first continuum shell-model study of weakly bound
neutron-rich nuclei involving multiconfiguration mixing. For the
single-particle basis, the complex-energy Berggren ensemble representing the
bound single-particle states, narrow resonances, and the non-resonant continuum
background is taken. Our shell-model Hamiltonian consists of a one-body finite
potential and a zero-range residual two-body interaction. The systems with two
valence neutrons are considered. The Gamow shell model, which is a
straightforward extension of the traditional shell model, is shown to be an
excellent tool for the microscopic description of weakly bound systems. It is
demonstrated that the residual interaction coupling to the particle continuum
is important; in some cases, it can give rise to the binding of a nucleus.Comment: 4 pages, More realistic s.p. energies used than in the precedent

Dynamics of open quantum systems
The coupling between the states of a system and the continuum into which it
is embedded, induces correlations that are especially large in the short time
scale. These correlations cannot be calculated by using a statistical or
perturbational approach. They are, however, involved in an approach describing
structure and reaction aspects in a unified manner. Such a model is the SMEC
(shell model embedded in the continuum). Some characteristic results obtained
from SMEC as well as some aspects of the correlations induced by the coupling
to the continuum are discussed.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure
MORPH: A Reference Architecture for Configuration and Behaviour Self-Adaptation
An architectural approach to self-adaptive systems involves runtime change of
system configuration (i.e., the system's components, their bindings and
operational parameters) and behaviour update (i.e., component orchestration).
Thus, dynamic reconfiguration and discrete event control theory are at the
heart of architectural adaptation. Although controlling configuration and
behaviour at runtime has been discussed and applied to architectural
adaptation, architectures for self-adaptive systems often compound these two
aspects reducing the potential for adaptability. In this paper we propose a
reference architecture that allows for coordinated yet transparent and
independent adaptation of system configuration and behaviour
A study of nuclei of astrophysical interest in the continuum shell model
We present here the first application of realistic shell model (SM) including
coupling between many-particle (quasi-)bound states and the continuum of
one-particle scattering states to the spectroscopy of 8B and to the calculation
of astrophysical factors in the reaction 7Be(p,gamma)8B.Comment: 9 pages incl. 3 figures, LaTeX with iopart class and epsf. Invited

Carrier drift velocity and edge magnetoplasmons in graphene
We investigate electron dynamics at the graphene edge by studying the
propagation of collective edge magnetoplasmon (EMP) excitations. By timing the
travel of narrow wave-packets on picosecond time scales around exfoliated
samples, we find chiral propagation with low attenuation at a velocity which is
quantized on Hall plateaus. We extract the carrier drift contribution from the
EMP propagation and find it to be slightly less than the Fermi velocity, as
expected for an abrupt edge. We also extract the characteristic length for
Coulomb interaction at the edge and find it to be smaller than for soft,
depletion edge systems.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures of main text and 6 pages, 6 figures of

A Framework for Decision-based Consistencies
International audienceConsistencies are properties of constraint networks that can be enforced by appropriate algorithms to reduce the size of the search space to be explored. Recently, many consistencies built upon taking decisions (most often, variable assignments) and stronger than (general- ized) arc consistency have been introduced. In this paper, our ambition is to present a clear picture of decision-based consistencies. We identify four general classes (or levels) of decision-based consistencies, denoted by S∆φ, E∆φ, B∆φ and D∆φ, study their relationships, and show that known consistencies are particular cases of these classes. Interestingly, this gen- eral framework provides us with a better insight into decision-based con- sistencies, and allows us to derive many new consistencies that can be directly integrated and compared with other ones
Competing phases in the high field phase diagram of (TMTSF)ClO
A model is presented for the high field phase diagram of (TMTSF)ClO,
taking into account the anion ordering, which splits the Fermi surface in two
bands. For strong enough field, the largest metal-SDW critical temperature
corresponds to the N=0 phase, which originates from two intraband nesting
processes. At lower temperature, the competition between these processes puts
at disadvantage the N=0 phase vs. the N=1 phase, which is due to interband
nesting. A first order transition takes then place from the N=0 to N=1 phase.
We ascribe to this effect the experimentally observed phase diagrams.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures (to appear in Phys. Rev. Lett.
Exogenous Transforming Growth Factor-β1 and Its Helminth-Derived Mimic Attenuate the Heart\u27s Inflammatory Response to Ischemic Injury and Reduce Mature Scar Size
\ua9 2024 American Society for Investigative Pathology. Coronary reperfusion after acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is standard therapy to salvage ischemic heart muscle. However, subsequent inflammatory responses within the infarct lead to further loss of viable myocardium. Transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1 is a potent anti-inflammatory cytokine released in response to tissue injury. The aim of this study was to investigate the protective effects of TGF-β1 after MI. In patients with STEMI, there was a significant correlation (P = 0.003) between higher circulating TGF-β1 levels at 24 hours after MI and a reduction in infarct size after 3 months, suggesting a protective role of early increase in circulating TGF-β1. A mouse model of cardiac ischemia reperfusion was used to demonstrate multiple benefits of exogenous TGF-β1 delivered in the acute phase. It led to a significantly smaller infarct size (30% reduction, P = 0.025), reduced inflammatory infiltrate (28% reduction, P = 0.015), lower intracardiac expression of inflammatory cytokines IL-1β and chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 2 (>50% reduction, P = 0.038 and 0.0004, respectively) at 24 hours, and reduced scar size at 4 weeks (21% reduction, P = 0.015) after reperfusion. Furthermore, a low-fibrogenic mimic of TGF-β1, secreted by the helminth parasite Heligmosomoides polygyrus, had an almost identical protective effect on injured mouse hearts. Finally, genetic studies indicated that this benefit was mediated by TGF-β signaling in the vascular endothelium
