On the Low-Energy Effective Action of N=2 Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theory
We investigate the perturbative part of Seiberg's low-energy effective action
of N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in Wess-Zumino gauge in the
conventional effective field theory technique. Using the method of constant
field approximation and restricting the effective action with at most two
derivatives and not more than four-fermion couplings, we show some features of
the low-energy effective action given by Seiberg based on anomaly and
non-perturbative -function arguments.Comment: 27 pages, RevTex, no figure
Viral genotype and HLA class II alleles influence on extra-hepatic manifestations of chronic HCV infection
Objective: To test whether an association between HCV genotype, HLA class II alleles distribution and extra-hepatic manifestations (EHM ) can be demonstrated in a group of Italian patients with chronic HCV infection . Methods: Sixty patients affected by HCV infection with EHM were consecutively enrolled. 163 HCV patients without EHM were tested as controls for the prevalence of HCV genotypes, while we referred to literature as to the controls for HLA distribution. HCV-RNA was quantified by a RT-PCR. HLA class II alleles typing was performed using a standard microlymphocytotoxicity assay. We used chi-square or Fisher test (p<0.05 significant). Odds Ratio (OR) was performed by 2X2 contingency table. Results: HCV 2c genotype was found in 63.46% of patients compared to 19.63% of controls (p<0.0001; OR=7.11). Furthermore, it correlated with carpal tunnel syndrome (p=0.03; OR=4.5) and autoimmune thyroiditis (p=0.02; OR=9.2). On the contrary, 1b genotype protected from EHM in toto (p=0.0004; OR=0.21) and particularly from carpal tunnel syndrome (p=0.0014; OR=0.07). Moreover, 3a genotype prevented HCV people from having cryoglobulinemia (p=0.05; OR=0.11). As to HLA, DR6 seemed to facilitate EHM in HCV patients (p=0.041; OR=1.61), while DQ2 (p=0.03; OR=0.5) and DQ3 (p=0.002; OR= 0.5) may play a protective role. In addition, HLA DR3 was associated with cryoglobulinemia (p=0.02; OR=9.5). Conclusions: According to our findings, 2c genotype can be considered as a major risk factor for developing HCVrelated EHM, while 1b genotype seems to prevent their onset; there are also evidences suggesting that HLA might play a role in chronic HCV infected patients
Salicin-7-sulfate: A new salicinoid from willow and implications for herbal medicine
Willow (Salix sp.) is a historically well-known herbal medicine that provided the lead compound (salicin) for the discovery of aspirin, one of the most successful plant derived drugs in human medicine. During a metabolomics screen of 86 Salix species contained in the UK National Willow Collection, we have discovered, isolated and fully characterised a new natural salicinoid – salicin-7-sulfate. This molecule may have important human pharmacological actions that need to be considered in determining the efficacy and safety of willow herbal medicines
N=2 SYM Action as a BRST Exact Term, Topological Yang Mills and Instantons
By constructing a nilpotent extended BRST operator \bs that involves the
N=2 global supersymmetry transformations of one chirality, we show that the
standard N=2 off-shell Super Yang Mills Action can be represented as an exact
BRST term \bs \Psi, if the gauge fermion is allowed to depend on the
inverse powers of supersymmetry ghosts. By using this nonanalytical structure
of the gauge fermion (via inverse powers of supersymmetry ghosts), we give
field redefinitions in terms of composite fields of supersymmetry ghosts and
N=2 fields and we show that Witten's topological Yang Mills theory can be
obtained from the ordinary Euclidean N=2 Super Yang Mills theory directly by
using such field redefinitions. In other words, TYM theory is obtained as a
change of variables (without twisting). As a consequence it is found that
physical and topological interpretations of N=2 SYM are intertwined together
due to the requirement of analyticity of global SUSY ghosts. Moreover, when
after an instanton inspired truncation of the model is used, we show that the
given field redefinitions yield the Baulieu-Singer formulation of Topological
Yang Mills.Comment: Latex, 1+15 pages. Published versio
Phenylalkanoid glycosides (non-salicinoids) from wood chips of Salix triandra Ă— dasyclados hybrid willow
Salix triandra (almond leaved willow) is an established crop, grown in coppicing regimes for basket-making materials. It is known as a source of non-salicinoid phenolic glycosides such as triandrin and salidroside. A spontaneous natural hybrid of S. triandra and S. dasyclados was subjected to metabolite profiling by high resolution LC-MS and 22 phenolic glycosides, including 18 that are new to the Salicaceae were identified. Structures were determined by HPLC isolation and NMR methods. The hybridisation process has introduced novel chemistry into the Salix phenolic glycoside palette, in particular the ability to generate disaccharide conjugates where the glycosyl group is further extended by a range of sugars including apiose, rhamnose, xylose and arabinose. Also of note is the appearance of chavicol derivatives, also not previously seen in Salix spp. The work demonstrates the plasticity of the phenolic glycoside biosynthetic pathway and the potential to improve established crops such as S. triandra and S. dasyclados, via high-value metabolites, for both basketry and bioenergy markets
Anomalie cromosomiche, valutate come frequenza di micronuclei spontanei, in soggetti con fenomeno di Raynaud sospetto presclerodermico [Chromosome aberrations, valued as frequency of spontaneous micronuclei, in subjects with suspected presclerodermic Raynaud's phenomenon]
Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of spontaneous chromosome damage in cultured peripheral lymphocytes of subjects with suspected presclerodermic Raynaud’s phenomenon (RP), by means of molecular cytogenetic analysis. Methods: We studied 20 suspected presclerodermic RP, 20 idiopathic RP and 25 healthy subjects. As marker of chromosome alteration we used the micronucleus assay. All subjects were also classified as ANA-, ACA+ or Scl70+. To identify the mechanism of MN formation, a MN fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) analysis using a pancentromeric DNA probe was also performed. Results: Suspected presclerodermic RP subjects, showed significantly higher MN frequencies than idiopathic RP and controls (39±15.2 vs 10±2.1 and 9.8±3.5 respectively p<0.0001). Interestingly, subjects with idiopathic RP displayed MN frequency comparable to that of controls. Furthermore, ACA+ subjects showed the highest MN frequencies (44±8.1) as compared to subjects with different antibody pattern (26±7.1). Conclusions: Our results show the presence of higher levels of chromosomal damage in circulating lymphocytes of suspected presclerodermic RP. They also would suggest a key role of anti-centromere antibody in determining the observed cytogenetic anomalies. FISH analysis indicated that both aneuploidogenic and clastogenic events contribute to the formation of MN observed in suspected presclerodermic RP
Idiopathic recurrent pericarditis refractory to colchicine treatment can reveal tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated periodic syndrome
Recurrences develop in up to 20-50% of patients with acute pericarditis. Although different causes of recurrent pericarditis have been identified, the etiology remains obscure in most cases which are therefore labelled as idiopathic. Autoinflammatory syndromes include familial Mediterranean fever (FMF), due to mutations in the MEFV gene, and tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated periodic syndrome (TRAPS), due to mutations in the TNFRSF1A gene. Recurrent pericarditis is a common feature of both conditions, but it rarely occurs alone. Colchicine is the standard treatment for FMF, while patients with TRAPS do not respond to colchicine therapy, but are responsive to corticosteroids. Based on the proven efficacy of colchicine in preventing polyserositis in FMF, colchicine has been proposed for the treatment of recurrent pericarditis and is able to decrease the recurrence rate. Our aim was to investigate the possible involvement of TNFRSF1A mutations in a group of patients with idiopathic recurrent pericarditis who were refractory to colchicine treatment. Thirty consecutive patients (17 males, 13 females) diagnosed with idiopathic recurrent pericarditis, who were characterized by a poor response to colchicine treatment, were enrolled in the study. Mutations of the TNFRSF1A gene were searched for by amplifying, using polymerase chain reaction (PCR), genomic DNA, and direct sequencing. TNFRSF1A mutations were found in 4 of the 30 patients. None of these 4 patients had a family history of recurrent inflammatory syndromes or history of pericarditis. One of the 4 patients had a novel heterozygous deletion (Delta Y103-R104) and three patients carried a heterozygous low-penetrance R92Q mutation. Our data suggest that TRAPS should be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of recurrent pericarditis, and mutation analysis of the TNFRSF1A gene should be considered, in addition to MEFV analysis, in patients of Mediterranean origin. A poor response to colchicine treatment and/or a steroid-dependence may be the clue to investigate TNFRSF1A mutations in patients with idiopathic recurrent pericarditis
Non-holomorphic Corrections from Threebranes in F Theory
We construct solutions of type IIB supergravity dual to N=2 super Yang-Mills
theories. By considering a probe moving in a background with constant coupling
and an AdS_{5} component in its geometry, we are able to reproduce the exact
low energy effective action for the theory with gauge group SU(2) and N_{f}=4
massless flavors. After turning on a mass for the flavors we find corrections
to the AdS_{5} geometry. In addition, the coupling shows a power law dependence
on the energy scale of the theory. The origin of the power law behaviour of the
coupling is traced back to instanton corrections. Instanton corrections to the
four derivative terms in the low energy effective action are correctly obtained
from a probe analysis. By considering a Wilson loop in this geometry we are
also able to compute the instanton effects on the quark-antiquark potential.
Finally we consider a solution corresponding to an asymptotically free field
theory. Again, the leading form of the four derivative terms in the low energy
effective action are in complete agreement with field theory expectations.Comment: 23 pages, uses harvmac, References added, typos corrected and minor

Exact results for N = 2 supersymmetric gauge theories on compact toric manifolds and equivariant Donaldson invariants
We provide a contour integral formula for the exact partition function of N = 2 supersymmetric U(N) gauge theories on compact toric four-manifolds by means of supersymmetric localisation. We perform the explicit evaluation of the contour integral for U(2) N = 2 17 theory on CP2 for all instanton numbers. In the zero mass case, corresponding to the N = 4 supersymmetric gauge theory, we obtain the generating function of the Euler characteristics of instanton moduli spaces in terms of mock-modular forms. In the decoupling limit of infinite mass we find that the generating function of local and surface observables computes equivariant Donaldson invariants, thus proving in this case a longstanding conjecture by N. Nekrasov. In the case of vanishing first Chern class the resulting equivariant Donaldson polynomials are new. \ua9 2016, The Author(s)
