    A revised instrument for the assessment of empathy and Theory of Mind in adolescents: Introducing the EmpaToM-Y

    Empathy and Theory of Mind (ToM) are two core components of social understanding. The EmpaToM is a validated social video task that allows for independent manipulation and assessment of the two capacities. First applications revealed that empathy and ToM are dissociable constructs on a neuronal as well as on a behavioral level. As the EmpaToM has been designed for the assessment of social understanding in adults, it has a high degree of complexity and comprises topics that are inadequate for minors. For this reason, we designed a new version of the EmpaToM that is especially suited to measure empathy and ToM in youths. In experiment 1, we successfully validated the EmpaToM-Y on the original EmpaToM in an adult sample (N = 61), revealing a similar pattern of results across tasks and strong correlations of all constructs. As intended, the performance measure for ToM and the control condition of the EmpaToM-Y showed reduced difficulty. In experiment 2, we tested the feasibility of the EmpaToM-Y in a group of teenagers (N = 36). Results indicate a reliable empathy induction and higher demands of ToM questions for adolescents. We provide a promising task for future research targeting inter-individual variability of socio-cognitive and socio-affective capacities as well as their precursors and outcomes in healthy minors and clinical populations

    Empathy and correct mental state inferences both promote prosociality

    In a world with rapidly increasing population that competes for the earth's limited resources, cooperation is crucial. While research showed that empathizing with another individual in need enhances prosociality, it remains unclear whether correctly inferring the other's inner, mental states on a more cognitive level (i.e., mentalizing) elicits helping behavior as well. We applied a video-based laboratory task probing empathy and a performance measure of mentalizing in adult volunteers (N = 94) and assessed to which extent they were willing to help the narrators in the videos. We replicate findings that an empathy induction leads to more prosocial decisions. Crucially, we also found that correct mentalizing increases the willingness to help. This evidence helps clarify an inconsistent picture of the relation between mentalizing and prosociality

    Geschlechterspezifische Unterschiede bei der endovaskulĂ€ren Behandlung der peripheren arteriellen Verschlusskrankheit – Eine systematische LiteraturĂŒbersicht

    Zusammenfassung Hintergrund Es gibt Hinweise auf geschlechterspezifische Unterschiede bei der Entwicklung, Diagnostik und Behandlung der symptomatischen peripheren arteriellen Verschlusskrankheit (PAVK). Obwohl Frauen in der Literatur etwa 50 % der behandelten Kohorten ausmachen, ist deren Anteil in kontrollierten randomisierten Studien zur PAVK gering. Leitlinien enthalten bisher kaum geschlechtersensitive Empfehlungen, und die Ergebnisse retrospektiver Beobachtungsstudien widersprechen sich. Diese systematische Literaturrecherche soll verfĂŒgbare Beobachtungsstudien zu Geschlechterunterschieden bei der endovaskulĂ€ren Behandlung der symptomatischen PAVK identifizieren. Material und Methoden Es wurde eine systematische Literaturanalyse auf der Basis einer PubMed-Recherche mit dem Schwerpunkt auf retrospektive Beobachtungsstudien zum Vergleich der Behandlungsergebnisse zwischen MĂ€nnern und Frauen durchgefĂŒhrt. Ergebnisse Insgesamt konnten 37 Publikationen identifiziert werden, die eine Kohorte von 5.489.558 Patientinnen und Patienten (40,3 % Frauen) beschreiben. FĂŒnf Studien nutzten Propensity Score Matching zur Kontrolle von Störfaktoren. In 23 Studien wurden Behandlungsergebnisse nach der Dauer des Krankenhausaufenthalts bzw. nach 30 Tagen berichtet. WĂ€hrend 10 Studien einen Behandlungsnachteil bei Frauen identifizieren konnten, berichteten 6 Studien ĂŒber einen Behandlungsnachteil bei MĂ€nnern. Die weiteren 21 Studien konnten keine eindeutigen Unterschiede zeigen. Schlussfolgerungen Die verfĂŒgbare Real-World-Evidenz lĂ€sst aufgrund der methodischen Limitationen der eingeschlossenen Studien und deren unzureichender Vergleichbarkeit keine eindeutige Aussage zu geschlechterspezifischen Unterschieden bei der endovaskulĂ€ren Behandlung der PAVK zu

    Electric-field-induced coherent coupling of the exciton states in a single quantum dot

    The signature of coherent coupling between two quantum states is an anticrossing in their energies as one is swept through the other. In single semiconductor quantum dots containing an electron-hole pair the eigenstates form a two-level system that can be used to demonstrate quantum effects in the solid state, but in all previous work these states were independent. Here we describe a technique to control the energetic splitting of these states using a vertical electric field, facilitating the observation of coherent coupling between them. Near the minimum splitting the eigenstates rotate in the plane of the sample, being orientated at 45{\deg} when the splitting is smallest. Using this system we show direct control over the exciton states in one quantum dot, leading to the generation of entangled photon pairs

    Disparities in care and outcomes for primary liver cancer in England during 2008–2018: a cohort study of 8.52 million primary care population using the QResearch database

    Background: Liver cancer has one of the fastest rising incidence and mortality rates among all cancers in the UK, but it receives little attention. This study aims to understand the disparities in epidemiology and clinical pathways of primary liver cancer and identify the gaps for early detection and diagnosis of liver cancer in England. Methods: This study used a dynamic English primary care cohort of 8.52 million individuals aged ≄25 years in the QResearch database during 2008–2018, followed up to June 2021. The crude and age-standardised incidence rates, and the observed survival duration were calculated by sex and three liver cancer subtypes, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), and other specified/unspecified primary liver cancer. Regression models were used to investigate factors associated with an incident diagnosis of liver cancer, emergency presentation, late stage at diagnosis, receiving treatments, and survival duration after diagnosis by subtype. Findings: 7331 patients were diagnosed with primary liver cancer during follow-up. The age-standardised incidence rates increased over the study period, particularly for HCC in men (increased by 60%). Age, sex, socioeconomic deprivation, ethnicity, and geographical regions were all significantly associated with liver cancer incidence in the English primary care population. People aged ≄80 years were more likely to be diagnosed through emergency presentation and in late stages, less likely to receive treatments and had poorer survival than those aged <60 years. Men had a higher risk of being diagnosed with liver cancer than women, with a hazard ratio (HR) of 3.9 (95% confidence interval 3.6–4.2) for HCC, 1.2 (1.1–1.3) for CCA, and 1.7 (1.5–2.0) for other specified/unspecified liver cancer. Compared with white British, Asians and Black Africans were more likely to be diagnosed with HCC. Patients with higher socioeconomic deprivation were more likely to be diagnosed through the emergency route. Survival rates were poor overall. Patients diagnosed with HCC had better survival rates (14.5% at 10-year survival, 13.1%–16.0%) compared to CCA (4.4%, 3.4%–5.6%) and other specified/unspecified liver cancer (12.5%, 10.1%–15.2%). For 62.7% of patients with missing/unknown stage in liver cancer, their survival outcomes were between those diagnosed in Stages III and IV. Interpretation: This study provides an overview of the current epidemiology and the disparities in clinical pathways of primary liver cancer in England between 2008 and 2018. A complex public health approach is needed to tackle the rapid increase in incidence and the poor survival of liver cancer. Further studies are urgently needed to address the gaps in early detection and diagnosis of liver cancer in England.     Reuse of structural domain–domain interactions in protein networks

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Protein interactions are thought to be largely mediated by interactions between structural domains. Databases such as <it>i</it>Pfam relate interactions in protein structures to known domain families. Here, we investigate how the domain interactions from the <it>i</it>Pfam database are distributed in protein interactions taken from the HPRD, MPact, BioGRID, DIP and IntAct databases.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We find that known structural domain interactions can only explain a subset of 4–19% of the available protein interactions, nevertheless this fraction is still significantly bigger than expected by chance. There is a correlation between the frequency of a domain interaction and the connectivity of the proteins it occurs in. Furthermore, a large proportion of protein interactions can be attributed to a small number of domain interactions. We conclude that many, but not all, domain interactions constitute reusable modules of molecular recognition. A substantial proportion of domain interactions are conserved between <it>E. coli</it>, <it>S. cerevisiae </it>and <it>H. sapiens</it>. These domains are related to essential cellular functions, suggesting that many domain interactions were already present in the last universal common ancestor.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our results support the concept of domain interactions as reusable, conserved building blocks of protein interactions, but also highlight the limitations currently imposed by the small number of available protein structures.</p

    Spontaneous adaptation explains why people act faster when being imitated

    The human ability to perform joint actions is often attributed to high-level cognitive processes. For example, the finding that action leaders act faster when imitated by their partners has been interpreted as evidence for anticipation of the other’s actions (Pfister, Dignath, Hommel, & Kunde, 2013). In two experiments, we showed that a low-level mechanism can account for this finding. Action leaders were faster when imitated than when counterimitated, but only if they could observe their partner’s actions (Exp. 1). Crucially, when due to our manipulation the partner’s imitative actions became slower than the counterimitative actions, leaders also became slower when they were imitated, and faster when counterimitated (Exp. 2). Our results suggest that spontaneous temporal adaptation is a key mechanism in joint action tasks. We argue for a reconsideration of other phenomena that have traditionally been attributed solely to high-level processes
