Boundary conditions in first order gravity: Hamiltonian and Ensemble

In this work two different boundary conditions for first order gravity, corresponding to a null and a negative cosmological constant respectively, are studied. Both boundary conditions allows to obtain the standard black hole thermodynamics. Furthermore both boundary conditions define a canonical ensemble. Additionally the quasilocal energy definition is obtained for the null cosmological constant case.Comment: To be published in Phys, Rev.

FRW and domain walls in higher spin gravity

    Get PDF
We present exact solutions to Vasiliev's bosonic higher spin gravity equations in four dimensions with positive and negative cosmological constant that admit an interpretation in terms of domain walls, quasi-instantons and Friedman-Robertson-Walker (FRW) backgrounds. Their isometry algebras are infinite dimensional higher-spin extensions of spacetime isometries generated by six Killing vectors. The solutions presented are obtained by using a method of holomorphic factorization in noncommutative twistor space and gauge functions. In interpreting the solutions in terms of Fronsdal-type fields in spacetime, a field-dependent higher spin transformation is required, which is implemented at leading order. To this order, the scalar field solves Klein-Gordon equation with conformal mass in (anti) de Sitter space. We interpret the FRW solution with de Sitter asymptotics in the context of inflationary cosmology and we expect that the domain wall and FRW solutions are associated with spontaneously broken scaling symmetries in their holographic description. We observe that the factorization method provides a convenient framework for setting up a perturbation theory around the exact solutions, and we propose that the nonlinear completion of particle excitations over FRW and domain wall solutions requires black hole-like states.Comment: 63 page

    Torsion induces Gravity

In this work the Poincare-Chern Simons and Anti de Sitter Chern Simons gravities are studied. For both a solution that can be casted as a black hole with manifest torsion is found. Those solutions resemble Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild-AdS solutions respectively.Comment: 4 pages, RevTe

Higher Dimensional Gravity, Propagating Torsion and AdS Gauge Invariance

The most general theory of gravity in d-dimensions which leads to second order field equations for the metric has [(d-1)/2] free parameters. It is shown that requiring the theory to have the maximum possible number of degrees of freedom, fixes these parameters in terms of the gravitational and the cosmological constants. In odd dimensions, the Lagrangian is a Chern-Simons form for the (A)dS or Poincare groups. In even dimensions, the action has a Born-Infeld-like form. Torsion may occur explicitly in the Lagrangian in the parity-odd sector and the torsional pieces respect local (A)dS symmetry for d=4k-1 only. These torsional Lagrangians are related to the Chern-Pontryagin characters for the (A)dS group. The additional coefficients in front of these new terms in the Lagrangian are shown to be quantized.Comment: 10 pages, two columns, no figures, title changed in journal, final version to appear in Class. A note on a gauge-gravity relation and functional determinants

    Get PDF
We present a refinement of a recently found gauge-gravity relation between one-loop effective actions: on the gauge side, for a massive charged scalar in 2d dimensions in a constant maximally symmetric electromagnetic field; on the gravity side, for a massive spinor in d-dimensional (Euclidean) anti-de Sitter space. The inclusion of the dimensionally regularized volume of AdS leads to complete mapping within dimensional regularization. In even-dimensional AdS, we get a small correction to the original proposal; whereas in odd-dimensional AdS, the mapping is totally new and subtle, with the `holographic trace anomaly' playing a crucial role.Comment: 6 pages, io

Black holes with topologically nontrivial AdS asymptotics

    Get PDF
Asymptotically locally AdS black hole geometries of dimension d > 2 are studied for nontrivial topologies of the transverse section. These geometries are static solutions of a set of theories labeled by an integer 0 < k < [(d-1)/2] which possess a unique globally AdS vacuum. The transverse sections of these solutions are d-2 surfaces of constant curvature, allowing for different topological configurations. The thermodynamic analysis of these solutions reveals that the presence of a negative cosmological constant is essential to ensure the existence of stable equilibrium states. In addition, it is shown that these theories are holographically related to [(d-1)/2] different conformal field theories at the boundary.Comment: 13 Pages, 3 figures, two columns, Revtex, last version for PR

Determinant and Weyl anomaly of Dirac operator: a holographic derivation

    Get PDF
We present a holographic formula relating functional determinants: the fermion determinant in the one-loop effective action of bulk spinors in an asymptotically locally AdS background, and the determinant of the two-point function of the dual operator at the conformal boundary. The formula originates from AdS/CFT heuristics that map a quantum contribution in the bulk partition function to a subleading large-N contribution in the boundary partition function. We use this holographic picture to address questions in spectral theory and conformal geometry. As an instance, we compute the type-A Weyl anomaly and the determinant of the iterated Dirac operator on round spheres, express the latter in terms of Barnes' multiple gamma function and gain insight into a conjecture by B\"ar and Schopka.Comment: 11 pages; new comments and references added, typos correcte

Conserved charges for gravity with locally AdS asymptotics

    Get PDF
A new formula for the conserved charges in 3+1 gravity for spacetimes with local AdS asymptotic geometry is proposed. It is shown that requiring the action to have an extremum for this class of asymptotia sets the boundary term that must be added to the Lagrangian as the Euler density with a fixed weight factor. The resulting action gives rise to the mass and angular momentum as Noether charges associated to the asymptotic Killing vectors without requiring specification of a reference background in order to have a convergent expression. A consequence of this definition is that any negative constant curvature spacetime has vanishing Noether charges. These results remain valid in the limit of vanishing cosmological constant.Comment: 5 pages, 2 Columns, revtex. Last version for Phys. Rev. Let

Conserved Charges for Even Dimensional Asymptotically AdS Gravity Theories

    Get PDF
Mass and other conserved Noether charges are discussed for solutions of gravity theories with locally Anti-de Sitter asymptotics in 2n dimensions. The action is supplemented with a boundary term whose purpose is to guarantee that it reaches an extremum on the classical solutions, provided the spacetime is locally AdS at the boundary. It is also shown that if spacetime is locally AdS at spatial infinity, the conserved charges are finite and properly normalized without requiring subtraction of a reference background. In this approach, Noether charges associated to Lorentz and diffeomorphism invariance vanish identically for constant curvature spacetimes. The case of zero cosmological constant is obtained as a limit of AdS, where Λ\Lambda plays the role of a regulator.Comment: 8 pages, RevTeX, no figures, two columns, references added and minor typos corrected, final version for Phys. Analysing Charges in even dimensions

Lanczos-Lovelock theories of gravity, in its first order version, are studied on asymptotically locally anti de Sitter spaces. It is shown that thermodynamics satisfies the standard behavior and an expression for entropy is found for this formalism. Finally a short analysis of the algebra of conserved charges is displayed
