    Alkene anti-dihydroxylation with malonoyl peroxides

    Get PDF
Malonoyl peroxide 1, prepared in a single step from the commercially available diacid, is an effective reagent for the anti-dihydroxylation of alkenes. Reaction of 1 with an alkene in the presence of acetic acid at 40 °C followed by alkaline hydrolysis leads to the corresponding diol (35-92%) with up to 13:1 anti-selectivity. A mechanism consistent with experimental findings is proposed that accounts for the selectivity observed

Contact Lens-Associated Infectious Keratitis: Update on Diagnosis and Therapy

    Get PDF
The focus of this chapter is to review the most recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of contact-lens-related infectious keratitis, the most sight-threatening complication of contact lens wear. In the last decades, contact lenses technology has confronted several challenges, including the need for safer and more comfortable polymer materials. The development of high coefficient oxygen permeability (Dkt) and low-water content disposable contact lens translated into a significant improvement in ocular discomfort related to dry eye and allergic reactions, decreasing biofilm build-up on the external surface of the lens. Additionally, the emergence and boom-effect of corneal refractive surgery have also driven the development of better contact lens manufacturing. Despite these substantial technological advances, contact lens users continue to be at risk for developing corneal infections. We describe recent epidemiologic data, and advances in understanding the complex pathogenesis of the disease, including the clinical characteristics of the infectious process produced by bacteria, fungi, and protozoans. Finally, the recent development of diagnostic techniques and therapeutic regimens are discussed

Alkene dioxygenation with malonoyl peroxides : synthesis of ɣ-lactones, isobenzofuranones and tetrahydrofurans

    Get PDF
Treatment of homoallylic alcohols or carboxylic acids with malonoyl peroxide 1 provides a stereoselective method for the preparation of tetrahydrofurans, ɣ-lactones and isobenzofuranones in 44–82% yield and up to 27:1 trans-selectivity. Application of this simple and effective heterocyclization in the synthesis of the antidepressant citalopram is also described

Alkene oxyamination using malonoyl peroxides : preparation of pyrrolidines and isoxazolidines

    Get PDF
Treatment of homoallylic N-tosyl amines or allylic N-tosyl hydroxylamines with 1.5 equiv of a malonoyl peroxide provides a stereoselective method to access functionalized pyrrolidines and isoxazolidines. This metal free alkene oxyamination proceeds in 50-85% yield and up to 13:1 trans-selectivity. In addition, the relative stereochemistry of the oxygen and nitrogen substituents can be inverted through an oxidation/reduction sequence or inverting the stereochemistry of the starting alkene. Mechanistic investigations show a higher reactivity for hydroxyl nucleophiles over sulfonamide nucleophiles revealing a preference for dioxygenation over oxyamination

Metal triflate-promoted allylic substitution reactions of cinnamyl alcohol in the presence of orthoesters and acetals

    Get PDF
The product distribution of ethers formed from the reaction of cinnamyl alcohol with orthoesters in the presence of indium (III) triflate (InOTf)3 is dependent on both the reaction temperature and catalyst loading. Carrying out the reaction at room temperature under low loadings of the catalyst leads to a facile reaction generating the unexpected secondary allyl ether as the major product. In contrast, carrying out the reaction under higher catalyst loadings at elevated temperatures provides the expected primary linear ether in high yield and with excellent selectivity. The etherification reaction is also effective in the presence of acetals and ketals in place of orthoesters and allows for the development of the procedure to encompass a telescoped etherification protocol in which the acetal is generated in situ

Validation of electrodeposited 241Am alpha-particle sources for use in liquified gas detectors at cryogenic temperatures

This paper describes a procedure for the validation of alpha-particle sources (exempt unsealed sources) to be used in experimental setups with liquefied gases at cryogenic temperatures (down to -196 C) and high vacuum. These setups are of interest for the development and characterization of neutrino and dark matter detectors based on liquid argon, among others. Due to the high purity requirements, the sources have to withstand high vacuum and cryogenic temperatures for extended periods. The validation procedure has been applied to 241Am sources produced by electrodeposition.Comment: 5 page

Pion and proton showers in the CALICE scintillator-steel analogue hadron calorimeter

Showers produced by positive hadrons in the highly granular CALICE scintillator-steel analogue hadron calorimeter were studied. The experimental data were collected at CERN and FNAL for single particles with initial momenta from 10 to 80 GeV/c. The calorimeter response and resolution and spatial characteristics of shower development for proton- and pion-induced showers for test beam data and simulations using Geant4 version 9.6 are compared.Comment: 26 pages, 16 figures, JINST style, changes in the author list, typos corrected, new section added, figures regrouped. Shower development of particles with momenta from 15 GeV to 150 GeV in the CALICE scintillator-tungsten hadronic calorimeter

We present a study of showers initiated by electrons, pions, kaons, and protons with momenta from 15 GeV to 150 GeV in the highly granular CALICE scintillator-tungsten analogue hadronic calorimeter. The data were recorded at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron in 2011. The analysis includes measurements of the calorimeter response to each particle type as well as measurements of the energy resolution and studies of the longitudinal and radial shower development for selected particles. The results are compared to Geant4 simulations (version 9.6.p02). In the study of the energy resolution we include previously published data with beam momenta from 1 GeV to 10 GeV recorded at the CERN Proton Synchrotron in 2010.Comment: 35 pages, 21 figures, 8 table

Performance of the first prototype of the CALICE scintillator strip electromagnetic calorimeter

    Get PDF
A first prototype of a scintillator strip-based electromagnetic calorimeter was built, consisting of 26 layers of tungsten absorber plates interleaved with planes of 45x10x3 mm3 plastic scintillator strips. Data were collected using a positron test beam at DESY with momenta between 1 and 6 GeV/c. The prototype's performance is presented in terms of the linearity and resolution of the energy measurement. These results represent an important milestone in the development of highly granular calorimeters using scintillator strip technology. This technology is being developed for a future linear collider experiment, aiming at the precise measurement of jet energies using particle flow techniques
