On the nature of some SGRs and AXPs as rotation-powered neutron stars

We investigate the possibility that some SGRs/AXPs could be canonical rotation-powered pulsars using realistic NS structure parameters instead of fiducial values. We show that realistic NS parameters lowers the estimated value of the magnetic field and radiation efficiency, LX/E˙rotL_X/\dot{E}_{\rm rot}, with respect to estimates based on fiducial NS parameters. We show that nine SGRs/AXPs can be described as canonical pulsars driven by the NS rotational energy, for LXL_X computed in the soft (2--10~keV) X-ray band. We compute the range of NS masses for which LX/E˙rot<1L_X/\dot{E}_{\rm rot}<1. We discuss the observed hard X-ray emission in three sources of the group of nine potentially rotation-powered NSs. This additional hard X-ray component dominates over the soft one leading to LX/E˙rot>1L_X/\dot{E}_{\rm rot}>1 in two of them. We show that 9 SGRs/AXPs can be rotation-powered NSs if we analyze their X-ray luminosity in the soft 2--10~keV band. Interestingly, four of them show radio emission and six have been associated with supernova remnants (including Swift J1834.9-0846 the first SGR observed with a surrounding wind nebula). These observations give additional support to our results of a natural explanation of these sources in terms of ordinary pulsars. Including the hard X-ray emission observed in three sources of the group of potential rotation-powered NSs, this number of sources with LX/E˙rot<1L_X/\dot{E}_{\rm rot}<1 becomes seven. It remains open to verification 1) the accuracy of the estimated distances and 2) the possible contribution of the associated supernova remnants to the hard X-ray emission.Comment: 11 pages, 14 figures, to appear in A&

Biogas production from grape pomace: Thermodynamic model of the process and dynamic model of the power generation system

Recently, thermoelectric generators (TEGs) have emerged as a potential alternative for clean energy generation, due mainly to the technology innovation and the marked cost reduction of modules, as well as their distinctive advantages. In a TEG system, the electronic power conditioning system (PCS) plays a vital role in ensuring the effective power grid integration, since it is subject to requirements related not only to the variable thermal source itself but also to its effects on the grid operation. This paper proposes an enhanced structure of PCS for the grid integration of TEG arrays to maximize the energy capture from a variable heat source. The innovative topology employed consists of a Z-source inverter that allows the flexible, efficient and reliable generation of high quality electric power from the TEG array. A full detailed model is described and its control scheme is designed. The dynamic performance of the proposed systems is fully validated by computer simulation and experimental studies.Fil: Cáceres, Clara Ximena. Universidad Nacional de San Juan. Get PDF
This article analyzes Santiago Abascal’s non-verbal communication, exploring the development of his communication skills, thus adding to heretofore limited research on non-verbal expression and political communication by providing empirical evidence from the field. Content analysis has been carried out on the basis of a quantitative systematization of non-verbal communication, encompassing kinesic, prosodic and proxemic aspects. The corpus of study comprises 24 audiovisual documents, representative examples of Abascal’s public communication actions between the years 2014 and 2021, to which a tailormade frame of reference has been applied. Our findings show that Abascal’s communication skills have progressed and improved during that time period, and may now be defined as evincing notable intra-systemic and inter-systemic coherence in verbal, kinesic and paralinguistic language, which enables more effective and persuasive communication; a clear, precise and constant gestural style that amplifies the persuasive impact of his discourse; the use of consistent expressive signals interpreted by his audience as markers of credibility; and a mode of non-verbal expression that is emphatic and vehement, which underpins the meaning of the message, enables emotional connection, and fosters effective communication as a form of spectacle. The conclusion drawn here is that the Abascal’s development in expressive communication may be one contributing factor, among others, that has led to the rise of his political party, VOX.Este artículo estudia la comunicación no verbal de Santiago Abascal y examina la evolución de sus competencias comunicativas, contribuyendo así al avance de las escasas investigaciones sobre comunicación no verbal y comunicación política, y proporcionando evidencia empírica al respecto.

Assessing water storage variability in large exorheic river basins from global hydrological models over 1948–2016

Total land water storage anomalies (TWSAs) give valuable insights as to the hydrological behaviour of a basin and, as such, constitute one of the basin signatures. However, to this day, an accurate assessment of this hydrological variable remains a challenge. The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission enabled its monitoring at global scale. However, these observations are limited in time and do not give information as to the individual components and drivers of TWSAs. This variable can also be estimated by the means of global hydrological models (GHMs). Here, we did a long-term assessment (1948–2016) of TWSAs in 17 large exorheic basins worldwide using two state-of-the-art GHMs, namely the Community Water Model (CWatM) and WaterGAP. TWSAs were decomposed into individual mass components by the means of the models, and into individual temporal signals (seasonal, linear trend and interannual) by the means of harmonic analysis. In a first instance, the models were validated against GRACE-based TWSAs aggregated over the global continental area (except Greenland and Antarctica) for the time period 2002–2016. Model evaluation was also performed against in situ streamflow observations and showed a highly variable model performance depending on the model and gauging station considered. The long-term assessment of TWSAs and individual mass and temporal components revealed the importance of seasonal and annual water storage fluctuations in the soil, groundwater and river compartments. The comparison between CWatM and WGHM showed significant model discrepancy with respect to anomalies in these water storage compartments. These discrepancies are presumably related to different model parameterization as to maximum soil water storage capacity, groundwater recharge and groundwater abstractions for human use, and to the fact that WaterGAP was calibrated against observed mean streamflow. Furthermore, we found an El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) signature in the interannual signal of TWSAs by the means of a correlation analysis against the Multivariate ENSO Index (MEI)

Geodesic Deviation Equation in Bianchi Cosmologies

We present the Geodesic Deviation Equation (GDE) for the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker(FRW) universe and we compare it with the equation for Bianchi type I model. We justify consider this cosmological model due to the recent importance the Bianchi Models have as alternative models in cosmology. The main property of these models, solutions of Einstein Field Equations (EFE) is that they are homogeneous as the FRW model but they are not isotropic. We can see this because they have a non-null Weyl tensor in the GDE.Comment: Submitted to Journal of Physics: Conference Series (JPCS), ERE200

Pulse-based, Periodic MPC for Irrigation in Smart and Sustainable Agriculture

    Get PDF
Growing population together with global warm- ing and difficulty of access to water makes the increase of efficient and sustainable agriculture a priority. Undoubtedly, the recent development of low-cost IoT-based sensors and actuators entail great opportunities in this direction, since these devices can be easily deployed to implement advanced monitoring and irrigation control techniques at a farm scale. This paper proposes a pulse-based, periodic, economic pre- dictive controller. Its goal is to find the irrigation pulse trains that optimize water and energy consumption while ensuring adequate levels of soil moisture for the crops. To this purpose, the developed MPC makes use of soil moisture data at different depths, sent by a set of field sensors, and formulate a constrained optimization problem that takes into account water costs, electricity prices, and an accurate dynamical nonlinear agro-hydrological model. Its performance is tested by simulating real case-study, tests and shows that water and energy consumption can be significantly reduced
