    Printing of wirelessly rechargeable solid-state supercapacitors for soft, smart contact lenses with continuous operations

    Recent advances in smart contact lenses are essential to the realization of medical applications and vision imaging for augmented reality through wireless communication systems. However, previous research on smart contact lenses has been driven by a wired system or wireless power transfer with temporal and spatial restrictions, which can limit their continuous use and require energy storage devices. Also, the rigidity, heat, and large sizes of conventional batteries are not suitable for the soft, smart contact lens. Here, we describe a human pilot trial of a soft, smart contact lens with a wirelessly rechargeable, solid-state supercapacitor for continuous operation. After printing the supercapacitor, all device components (antenna, rectifier, and light-emitting diode) are fully integrated with stretchable structures for this soft lens without obstructing vision. The good reliability against thermal and electromagnetic radiations and the results of the in vivo tests provide the substantial promise of future smart contact lenses

    Clinical Characteristics of Monomorphic Post-transplant Lymphoproliferative Disorders

    Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders (PTLD) are a heterogeneous group of lymphoproliferative disorders associated with immunosuppression and Epstein-Barr virus infection. PTLD is classified into three major categories: early lesions, polymorphic PTLD, and monomorphic PTLD. The majority of monomorphic PTLD cases are non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of B-cell origin. This retrospective study was conducted to investigate the incidence, clinical manifestation, treatment, and outcomes of monomorphic PTLD among 5,817 recipients of solid organ or allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation from five institutions. Fourteen patients with monomorphic PTLD were identified (male:female 11:3; median age 42.6 yr, range 24-60). The overall incidence rate was 0.24%. The most common disease type was diffuse large B cell lymphoma (n=7). The median time between the transplant and diagnosis of PTLD was 85.8 months. However, all cases of PTLD after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation occurred within 1 yr after transplantation. Ten of the 14 patients had EBV-positive tumor. Fourteen patients received combination systemic chemotherapy and four patients were treated with radiation therapy. Ten patients achieved a complete response (CR) and two patients a partial response (PR). The median follow-up period for surviving patients was 36.6 months. Nine patients remain alive (eight CR, one PR). Nine of 11 solid organ transplantations preserved graft function. The present study indicates a lower incidence rate and a longer median time before the development of PTLD than those of previous reports.     Emergency Damage Restoration Experiences of 25MW Heavy-Duty Gas Turbine: Bearing Retrofit Design and Test Run

    Case StudyCase Study 6: A 25MW gas turbine had been damaged during operation. Particularly, its tilting pad journal bearings and shaft journals had suffered complete wiping‐out and deep crack damages, respectively. For an emergency restoration, both cracked journals had been machined out as much as 2% per the specified design diameter, and a series of design, analysis and manufacturing of the retrofit journal bearings had been carried out to have practically identical overall design characteristics to the OEM bearings. To verify operational reliability, the restored GT rotor had been test‐run at KIMM's high‐speed balancing facility. Since the test results had been favorable, the rotor had been put into an onsite operation, immediately. The restored GT system has been continuously running a stable commercial operation for more than 41 months up until now.     Evaluation of Electromagnetic Exposure in Wireless Power Transfer Systems for Electric Vehicles

    In wireless power transfer (WPT) systems, the electromagnetic fields generated by a charging module may exceed the limits set by international safety guidelines. This is a matter of concern for the safety of users of high-power WPT systems, such as electric vehicles (EVs). To address this issue, this study designed a stationary WPT system for EV charging. Furthermore, the dosimetry of the system was evaluated for two exposure scenarios. Electromagnetic field data obtained using the electromagnetic field analysis tool were employed to derive the induced quantities in the human body using the impedance method. In addition, the obtained results were compared to the values recommended by international guidelines (International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection)

    A case of Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease in a patient on hemodialysis

    abstractWe report an unusual case of probable Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease (CJD) in hemodialysis patient. A woman 59 years of age with a past history of hypertension and end-stage renal disease presented with a stuporous state preceded by rapidly progressive cognitive dysfunction, myoclonus, and akinetic mutism. At first, the cause of the altered mental status was assumed to be uremic or hypertensive encephalopathy combined with fever. Proper managements, however, did not improve the neurologic symptoms. Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging revealed bilaterally asymmetric high signal intensity in both basal ganglia and cerebral cortices. Electroencephalography showed diffuse generalized theta-to-delta range slow wave and intermittent medium-to-high voltage complexes with a characteristic triphasic pattern on both hemispheres. Cerebrospinal fluid assay for the 14-3-3 protein was positive and diagnostic of CJD

    BOAO Photometric Survey of Galactic Open Clusters. III. Czernik 24 and Czernik 27

    We present BV CCD photometry for the open clusters Czernik 24 and Czernik 27. These clusters have never been studied before, and we provide, for the first time, the cluster parameters; reddening, distance, metallicity and age. Czernik 24 is an old open cluster with age 1.8 +/- 0.2 Gyr, metallicity [Fe/H]=-0.41 +/- 0.15 dex, distance modulus (m-M)_0 = 13.1 +/- 0.3 mag (d=4.1 +/- 0.5 kpc), and reddening E(B-V) = 0.54 +/- 0.12 mag. The parameters for Czernik 27 are estimated to be age = 0.63 +/- 0.07 Gyr, [Fe/H]= -0.02 +/- 0.10 dex, (m-M)_0 = 13.8 +/- 0.2 mag (d=5.8 +/- 0.5 kpc), and E(B-V) = 0.15 +/- 0.05 mag. The metallicity and distance values for Czernik 24 are consistent with the relation between the metallicity and the Galactocentric distance of other old open clusters. We find the metallicity gradient of 51 old open clusters including Czernik 24 to be Delta [Fe/H]/Delta R_gc= -0.064 +/- 0.009 dex/kpc.Comment: Accepted by the Journal of the Korean Astronomical Society, 2005 December issu
