As the use of state-operated youth confinement declined in recent years, primarily as a result of falling rates of serious juvenile crime, the relative importance of private facilities increased. The number of juveniles held in privately operated secure confinement facilities is now larger than the number confined in state institutions

    Vortex nucleation in rotating BEC: the role of the boundary condition for the order parameter

    We study the process of vortex nucleation in rotating two-dimensional BEC confined in a harmonic trap. We show that, within the Gross-Pitaevskii theory with the boundary condition of vanishing of the order parameter at infinity, topological defects nucleation occurs via the creation of vortex-antivortex pairs far from the cloud center, where the modulus of the order parameter is small. Then, vortices move towards the center of the cloud and antivortices move in the opposite direction but never disappear.     Awareness and experience in needle stick injuries among dental students at the University of Nairobi, Dental Hospital

    Background: Needle stick injuries (NSI) are the commonest route by which blood borne viruses and/or infections such as HIV, Hepatitis B and C are transmitted from patients to health care workers (HCW). Dental students are also at risk of such infections and injuries due to accidental contamination during their practical occupational exposure. There is hardly any information regarding the knowledge and experiences of NSI among dental students in Kenya.Objective: To determine the knowledge and experiences of NSI among dental students at the University of Nairobi Dental Hospital (UONDH).Design: Descriptive cross-sectional study.Setting: University of Nairobi Dental Hospital premises. The population included undergraduate and postgraduate dental students pursuing their degrees at the university.Results: Seventy two questionnaires were issued and a response rate of 62(81%) was achieved. The age of the respondents ranged from 21-35 years with a mean age of 24 years (SDĀ± 4.7) years. There were 33(53%) males and 29(47%) females. Most of the students were undergraduates (87%) while the rest were postgraduate students (13%). The majority (97%) of the respondents reported that NSI was a means of cross-infection. Only 29% of the respondents had suffered NSI. Of those who had suffered NSI, 36% of the incidents occurred when administering local anaesthesia, while 23% were during scaling, 18% when recapping needles, 18% while clearing up and 5% when suturing. Only seven of those who had suffered NSI (39%) had reported of NSI. The reasons for not reporting were: fear of stigmatisation (25%) or the fear of consequences of crossinfection (38%). All the respondents who had experienced NSI were undergraduates with no statistical significant difference between the undergraduate and postgraduate students (X2=3.758, p=0.052). Among the respondents who had experienced NSI, nine were males and nine were females with no statistical significance between the two genders (X2=0.106, p=0.48l). All the respondents recorded inadequate knowledge on the modes of prevention of NSI. Less than half (27%) of the respondents had accurate knowledge on the procedure followed in case of NSI. Only 27% of the respondents had taken post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) after suffering NSI with no statistically significant difference between males and females (X2=44, p=0.108).Conclusion: Although the level of knowledge on the risk of cross-infection from NSI was high, there was decreased awareness on the means of prevention and protocol

    A Multidiscipline Approach to Mitigating the Insider Threat

    Preventing and detecting the malicious insider is an inherently difficult problem that expands across many areas of expertise such as social, behavioral and technical disciplines. Unfortunately, current methodologies to combat the insider threat have had limited success primarily because techniques have focused on these areas in isolation. The technology community is searching for technical solutions such as anomaly detection systems, data mining and honeypots. The law enforcement and counterintelligence communities, however, have tended to focus on human behavioral characteristics to identify suspicious activities. These independent methods have limited effectiveness because of the unique dynamics associated with the insider threat. The solution requires a multidisciplinary approach with a clearly defined methodology that attacks the problem in an organized and consistent manner. The purpose of this paper is to present a framework that provides a systematic way to identify the malicious insider and describe a methodology to counter the threat. Our model, the Multidiscipline Approach to Mitigating the Insider Threat (MAMIT), introduces a novel process for addressing this challenge. MAMIT focuses on the collaboration of information from the relative disciplines and uses indicators to produce a consolidated matrix demonstrating the likelihood of an individual being a malicious insider. The well-known espionage case study involving Robert Hanssen is used to illustrate the effectiveness of the framework

    The Yrast Spectra of Weakly Interacting Bose-Einstein Condensates

    The low energy quantal spectrum is considered as a function of the total angular momentum for a system of weakly interacting bosonic atoms held together by an external isotropic harmonic potential. It is found that besides the usual condensation into the lowest state of the oscillator, the system exhibits two additional kinds of condensate and associated thermodynamic phase transitions. These new phenomena are derived from the degrees of freedom of "partition space" which describes the multitude of different ways in which the angular momentum can be distributed among the atoms while remaining all the time in the lowest state of the oscillator

    A Relational Event Approach to Modeling Behavioral Dynamics

    This chapter provides an introduction to the analysis of relational event data (i.e., actions, interactions, or other events involving multiple actors that occur over time) within the R/statnet platform. We begin by reviewing the basics of relational event modeling, with an emphasis on models with piecewise constant hazards. We then discuss estimation for dyadic and more general relational event models using the relevent package, with an emphasis on hands-on applications of the methods and interpretation of results. Statnet is a collection of packages for the R statistical computing system that supports the representation, manipulation, visualization, modeling, simulation, and analysis of relational data. Statnet packages are contributed by a team of volunteer developers, and are made freely available under the GNU Public License. These packages are written for the R statistical computing environment, and can be used with any computing platform that supports R (including Windows, Linux, and Mac).

    For a Bose-Einstein condensate placed in a rotating trap, we give a simplified expression of the Gross-Pitaevskii energy in the Thomas Fermi regime, which only depends on the number and shape of the vortex lines. Then we check numerically that when there is one vortex line, our simplified expression leads to solutions with a bent vortex for a range of rotationnal velocities and trap parameters which are consistent with the experiments.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures. submitte

    A Burst-Based ā€œHebbianā€ Learning Rule at Retinogeniculate Synapses Links Retinal Waves to Activity-Dependent Refinement

    Patterned spontaneous activity in the developing retina is necessary to drive synaptic refinement in the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN). Using perforated patch recordings from neurons in LGN slices during the period of eye segregation, we examine how such burst-based activity can instruct this refinement. Retinogeniculate synapses have a novel learning rule that depends on the latencies between pre- and postsynaptic bursts on the order of one second: coincident bursts produce long-lasting synaptic enhancement, whereas non-overlapping bursts produce mild synaptic weakening. It is consistent with ā€œHebbianā€ development thought to exist at this synapse, and we demonstrate computationally that such a rule can robustly use retinal waves to drive eye segregation and retinotopic refinement. Thus, by measuring plasticity induced by natural activity patterns, synaptic learning rules can be linked directly to their larger role in instructing the patterning of neural connectivity

    Cooper pairing and single particle properties of trapped Fermi gases

    We calculate the elementary excitations and pairing of a trapped atomic Fermi gas in the superfluid phase. The level spectra and pairing gaps undergo several transitions as the strength of the interactions between and the number of atoms are varied. For weak interactions, the Cooper pairs are formed between particles residing in the same harmonic oscillator shell. In this regime, the nature of the paired state is shown to depend critically on the position of the chemical potential relative to the harmonic oscillator shells and on the size of the mean field. For stronger interactions, we find a region where pairing occur between time-reversed harmonic oscillator states in different shells also.Comment: Slightly revised version: Mistakes in equation references in figures corrected.
