Constraints on Neutrino Parameters from Neutral-Current Solar Neutrino Measurements
We generalize the pull approach to define the function to the
analysis of the data with correlated statistical errors. We apply this method
to the analysis of the Sudbury Neutrino Collaboration data obtained in the
salt-phase. In the global analysis of all the solar neutrino and KamLAND data
we find the best fit (minimum ) values of neutrino parameters to be
and
eV. We confirm that the maximal mixing is strongly disfavored while the
bounds on are significantly strengthened.Comment: 6 figures. Some typos are corrected, figures are visually improve
Baryon Decuplet to Octet Electromagnetic Transitions in Quenched and Partially Quenched Chiral Perturbation Theory
We calculate baryon decuplet to octet electromagnetic transition form factors
in quenched and partially quenched chiral perturbation theory. We work in the
isospin limit of SU(3) flavor, up to next-to-leading order in the chiral
expansion, and to leading order in the heavy baryon expansion. Our results are
necessary for proper extrapolation of lattice calculations of these
transitions. We also derive expressions for the case of SU(2) flavor away from
the isospin limit.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, revtex
Evaluation of human and non-human primate antibody binding to pig cells lacking GGTA1/CMAH/β4GalNT2 genes
Background
Simultaneous inactivation of pig GGTA1 and CMAH genes eliminates carbohydrate xenoantigens recognized by human antibodies. The β4GalNT2 glycosyltransferase may also synthesize xenoantigens. To further characterize glycan-based species incompatibilities, we examined human and non-human primate antibody binding to cells derived from genetically modified pigs lacking these carbohydrate-modifying genes.
Methods
The Cas9 endonuclease and gRNA were used to create pigs lacking GGTA1, GGTA1/CMAH, or GGTA1/CMAH/β4GalNT2 genes. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were isolated from these animals and examined for binding to IgM and IgG from humans, rhesus macaques, and baboons.
Results
Cells from GGTA1/CMAH/β4GalNT2 deficient pigs exhibited reduced human IgM and IgG binding compared to cells lacking both GGTA1 and CMAH. Nonhuman primate antibody reactivity with cells from the various pigs exhibited a slightly different pattern of reactivity than that seen in humans. Simultaneous inactivation of the GGTA1 and CMAH genes increased nonhuman primate antibody binding compared to cells lacking either GGTA1 only or to those deficient in GGTA1/CMAH/β4GalNT2.
Conclusions
Inactivation of the β4GalNT2 gene reduces human and nonhuman primate antibody binding resulting in diminished porcine xenoantigenicity. The increased humoral immunity of nonhuman primates towards GGTA1/CMAH-deficient cells compared to pigs lacking either GGTA1 or GGTA1/CMAH/β4GalNT2 highlights the complexities of carbohydrate xenoantigens and suggests potential limitations of the nonhuman primate model for examining some genetic modifications. The progressive reduction of swine xenoantigens recognized by human immunoglobulin through inactivation of pig GGTA1/CMAH/β4GalNT2 genes demonstrates that the antibody barrier to xenotransplantation can be minimized by genetic engineering
Causes and consequences of spatial variation in sex ratios in a declining bird species
1. Male-biased sex ratios occur in many bird species, particularly in those with small or declining populations, but the causes of these skews and their consequences for local population demography are rarely known. Within-species variation in sex ratios can help to identify the demographic and behavioural processes associated with such biases. 2. Small populations may be more likely to have skewed sex ratios if sex differences in survival, recruitment or dispersal vary with local abundance. Analyses of species with highly variable local abundances can help to identify these mechanisms and the implications for spatial variation in demography. Many migratory bird species are currently undergoing rapid and severe declines in abundance in parts of their breeding ranges, and thus have sufficient spatial variation in abundance to explore the extent of sex ratio biases, their causes and implications. 3. Using national-scale bird ringing data for one such species (willow warbler, Phylloscopus trochilus), we show that sex ratios vary greatly across Britain, and that male-biased sites are more frequent in areas of low abundance, which are now widespread across much of south and east England. These sex ratio biases are sufficient to impact local productivity, as the relative number of juveniles caught at survey sites declines significantly with increasing sex ratio skew. 4. Sex differences in survival could influence this sex ratio variation, but we find little evidence for sex differences in survival increasing with sex ratio skew. In addition, sex ratios have become male-biased over the last two decades but there are no such trends in adult survival rates for males or females. This suggests that lower female recruitment into low abundance sites is contributing to these skews. 5. These findings suggest that male-biased sex ratios in small and declining populations can arise through local-scale sex-differences in survival and dispersal, with females recruiting disproportionately into larger populations. Given the high level of spatial variation in population declines and abundance of many migratory bird species across Europe at present, male-biased small populations may be increasingly common. As singing males are the primary records used in surveys of these species, and as unpaired males often sing throughout the breeding season, local sex ratio biases could also be masking the true extent of these population declines
All-optical switching and strong coupling using tunable whispering-gallery-mode microresonators
We review our recent work on tunable, ultrahigh quality factor
whispering-gallery-mode bottle microresonators and highlight their applications
in nonlinear optics and in quantum optics experiments. Our resonators combine
ultra-high quality factors of up to Q = 3.6 \times 10^8, a small mode volume,
and near-lossless fiber coupling, with a simple and customizable mode structure
enabling full tunability. We study, theoretically and experimentally, nonlinear
all-optical switching via the Kerr effect when the resonator is operated in an
add-drop configuration. This allows us to optically route a single-wavelength
cw optical signal between two fiber ports with high efficiency. Finally, we
report on progress towards strong coupling of single rubidium atoms to an
ultra-high Q mode of an actively stabilized bottle microresonator.Comment: 20 pages, 24 figures. Accepted for publication in Applied Physics B.

Horseplay, care and hands on hard work: gendered strategies of a project manager on a construction site
The discourse of managerial expertise favours rational analysis and masculine ideals but contemporary management literature also recognises the value of well-being and employee voice in the workplace. Drawing upon narrative analysis of interview data, we share unique insights into the lived experiences of Laura, one female project manager who recently managed a construction site in the Midlands in the UK. In contrast to previous research which indicates that female managers tend to conform to quite a traditional set of gender behaviours, Laura embraces a range of workplace appropriate gendered strategies, such as hard work and horseplay, together with sensitivity and caring. She draws from this mix of gendered strategies in negotiating between two different discourses of construction; one professional and one tough and practical. Her behaviour both reproduces the masculine ideals (through horseplay and heroic management) and opens up possibilities for modernising construction management (by caring). It is this combination of strategies that is at the heart of tacit expertise for Laura. Theoretically, the discussion adds to the development of a more nuanced understanding of management expertise as situated and person specific knowledge that draws on both the explicit and tacit. Specifically, the centrality of gendered strategies beyond the masculine ideals to success on site is highlighted
and couplings in QCD
We calculate the and couplings using QCD sum rules on the
light-cone. In this approach, the large-distance dynamics is incorporated in a
set of pion wave functions. We take into account two-particle and
three-particle wave functions of twist 2, 3 and 4. The resulting values of the
coupling constants are and .
From this we predict the partial width \Gamma (D^{*+} \ra D^0 \pi^+ )=32 \pm
5~ keV . We also discuss the soft-pion limit of the sum rules which is
equivalent to the external axial field approach employed in earlier
calculations. Furthermore, using and the pole
dominance model for the B \ra \pi and D\ra \pi semileptonic form factors
is compared with the direct calculation of these form factors in the same
framework of light-cone sum rules.Comment: 27 pages (LATEX) +3 figures enclosed as .uu file MPI-PhT/94-62 ,

Coexistence of 'alpha+ 208Pb' cluster structures and single-particle excitations in 212Po
Excited states in 212Po have been populated by alpha transfer using the
208Pb(18O,14C) reaction at 85MeV beam energy and studied with the EUROBALL IV
gamma multidetector array. The level scheme has been extended up to ~ 3.2 MeV
excitation energy from the triple gamma coincidence data. Spin and parity
values of most of the observed states have been assigned from the gamma angular
distributions and gamma -gamma angular correlations. Several gamma lines with
E(gamma) < 1 MeV have been found to be shifted by the Doppler effect, allowing
for the measurements of the associated lifetimes by the DSAM method. The
values, found in the range [0.1-0.6] ps, lead to very enhanced E1 transitions.
All the emitting states, which have non-natural parity values, are discussed in
terms of alpha-208Pb structure. They are in the same excitation-energy range as
the states issued from shell-model configurations.Comment: 21 pages, 19 figures, corrected typos, revised arguments in Sect.

Antifungal benzo[b]thiophene 1,1-dioxide IMPDH inhibitors exhibit pan-assay interference (PAINS) profiles
Fungi cause serious life-threatening infections in immunocompromised individuals and current treatments are now complicated by toxicity issues and the emergence of drug resistant strains. Consequently, there is a need for development of new antifungal drugs. Inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH), a key component of the de novo purine biosynthetic pathway, is essential for growth and virulence of fungi and is a potential drug target. In this study, a high-throughput screen of 114,000 drug-like compounds against Cryptococcus neoformans IMPDH was performed. We identified three 3-((5-substituted)-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)thio benzo[b]thiophene 1,1-dioxides that inhibited Cryptococcus IMPDH and also possessed whole cell antifungal activity. Analogs were synthesized to explore the SAR of these hits. Modification of the fifth substituent on the 1,3,4-oxadiazole ring yielded compounds with nanomolar in vitro activity, but with associated cytotoxicity. In contrast, two analogs generated by substituting the 1,3,4-oxadiazole ring with imidazole and 1,2,4-triazole gave reduced IMPDH inhibition in vitro, but were not cytotoxic. During enzyme kinetic studies in the presence of DTT, nucleophilic attack of a free thiol occurred with the benzo[b]thiophene 1,1-dioxide. Two representative compounds with substitution at the 5 position of the 1,3,4-oxadiazole ring, showed mixed inhibition in the absence of DTT. Incubation of these compounds with Cryptococcus IMPDH followed by mass spectrometry analysis showed non-specific and covalent binding with IMPDH at multiple cysteine residues. These results support recent reports that the benzo[b]thiophene 1,1-dioxides moiety as PAINS (pan-assay interference compounds) contributor
