Computing the entropy of user navigation in the web
Navigation through the web, colloquially known as "surfing", is one of the main activities of users during web interaction. When users follow a navigation trail they often tend to get disoriented in terms of the goals of their original query and thus the discovery of typical user trails could be useful in providing navigation assistance. Herein, we give a theoretical underpinning of user navigation in terms of the entropy of an underlying Markov chain modelling the web topology. We present a novel method for online incremental computation of the entropy and a large deviation result regarding the length of a trail to realize the said entropy. We provide an error analysis for our estimation of the entropy in terms of the divergence between the empirical and actual probabilities. We then indicate applications of our algorithm in the area of web data mining. Finally, we present an extension of our technique to higher-order Markov chains by a suitable reduction of a higher-order Markov chain model to a first-order one
Expression of the novel tumour suppressor p33ING1 is independent of p53
A recently cloned tumour suppressor candidate, p33ING1, has been shown in vitro to collaborate with p53 to execute growth arrest and apoptosis. However, it is unclear as to how the expression of ING1 is regulated in normal and stress conditions. Using a p53-knockout mouse model, we investigated if the expression of ING1 was dependent on p53. We found that there was no difference in ING1 mRNA and protein levels between p53+/+ and p53–/– murine organs. In addition, when normal human epithelial keratinocytes (NHEK) and a keratinocyte cell line, HaCaT, which lacks wild-type p53 function, were exposed to UVB irradiation, the expression levels of ING1 were elevated in both NHEK and HaCaT cells. It is interesting, however, that UVB irradiation did not induce ING1 expression in dermal fibroblasts isolated from p53+/+ and p53–/– mice. Based on our findings, we therefore conclude that the expression of ING1 is independent of p53 status. UV induction of ING1 in keratinocytes suggests that ING1 may play a role in cellular stress response and skin carcinogenesis. © 2000 Cancer Research Campaign http://www.bjcancer.co
Parasite infections in a social carnivore: Evidence of their fitness consequences and factors modulating infection load
There are substantial individual differences in parasite composition and infection load in wildlife populations. Few studies have investigated the factors shaping this heterogeneity in large wild mammals or the impact of parasite infections on Darwinian fitness, particularly in juveniles. A host's parasite composition and infection load can be shaped by factors that determine contact with infective parasite stages and those that determine the host's resistance to infection, such as abiotic and social environmental factors, and age. Host–parasite interactions and synergies between coinfecting parasites may also be important. We test predictions derived from these different processes to investigate factors shaping infection loads (fecal egg/oocyte load) of two energetically costly gastrointestinal parasites: the hookworm Ancylostoma and the intracellular Cystoisospora, in juvenile spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta) in the Serengeti National Park, in Tanzania. We also assess whether parasite infections curtail survival to adulthood and longevity. Ancylostoma and Cystoisospora infection loads declined as the number of adult clan members increased, a result consistent with an encounter‐reduction effect whereby adults reduced encounters between juveniles and infective larvae, but were not affected by the number of juveniles in a clan. Infection loads decreased with age, possibly because active immune responses to infection improved with age. Differences in parasite load between clans possibly indicate variation in abiotic environmental factors between clan den sites. The survival of juveniles (<365 days old) to adulthood decreased with Ancylostoma load, increased with age, and was modulated by maternal social status. High‐ranking individuals with low Ancylostoma loads had a higher survivorship during the first 4 years of life than high‐ranking individuals with high Ancylostoma loads. These findings suggest that high infection loads with energetically costly parasites such as hookworms during early life can have negative fitness consequences
A sequence of unsharp measurements enabling a real time visualization of a quantum oscillation
The normalized state of a single
two-level system performs oscillations under the influence of a resonant
driving field. It is assumed that only one realization of this process is
available. We show that it is possible to approximately visualize in real time
the evolution of the system as far as it is given by . For this
purpose we use a sequence of particular unsharp measurements separated in time.
They are specified within the theory of generalized measurements in which
observables are represented by positive operator valued measures (POVM). A
realization of the unsharp measurements may be obtained by coupling the
two-level system to a meter and performing the usual projection measurements on
the meter only.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. A. Some

The future of social is personal: the potential of the personal data store
This chapter argues that technical architectures that facilitate the longitudinal, decentralised and individual-centric personal collection and curation of data will be an important, but partial, response to the pressing problem of the autonomy of the data subject, and the asymmetry of power between the subject and large scale service providers/data consumers. Towards framing the scope and role of such Personal Data Stores (PDSes), the legalistic notion of personal data is examined, and it is argued that a more inclusive, intuitive notion expresses more accurately what individuals require in order to preserve their autonomy in a data-driven world of large aggregators. Six challenges towards realising the PDS vision are set out: the requirement to store data for long periods; the difficulties of managing data for individuals; the need to reconsider the regulatory basis for third-party access to data; the need to comply with international data handling standards; the need to integrate privacy-enhancing technologies; and the need to future-proof data gathering against the evolution of social norms. The open experimental PDS platform INDX is introduced and described, as a means of beginning to address at least some of these six challenges
dbar/ubar Asymmetry and the Origin of the Nucleon Sea
The Drell-Yan cross section ratios, , measured in
Fermilab E866, have led to the first determination of ,
, and the integral of for the
proton over the range . The E866 results are compared
with predictions based on parton distribution functions and various theoretical
models. The relationship between the E866 results and the NMC measurement of
the Gottfried integral is discussed. The agreement between the E866 results and
models employing virtual mesons indicates these non-perturbative processes play
an important role in the origin of the , asymmetry in the
nucleon sea.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, ReVTe
