Increasing security of supply by the use of a local power controller during large system disturbances
This paper describes intelligent ways in which distributed generation and local loads can be controlled during large system disturbances, using Local Power Controllers. When distributed generation is available, and a system disturbance is detected early enough, the generation can be dispatched, and its output power can be matched as closely as possible to local microgrid demand levels. Priority-based load shedding can be implemented to aid this process. In this state, the local microgrid supports the wider network by relieving the wider network of the micro-grid load. Should grid performance degrade further, the local microgrid can separate itself from the network and maintain power to the most important local loads, re-synchronising to the grid only after more normal performance is regained. Such an intelligent system would be a suitable for hospitals, data centres, or any other industrial facility where there are critical loads. The paper demonstrates the actions of such Local Power Controllers using laboratory experiments at the 10kVA scale
A QTL for osteoporosis detected in an F2 population derived from White Leghorn chicken lines divergently selected for bone index
Osteoporosis, resulting from progressive loss of structural bone during the period of egg-laying in hens, is associated with an increased susceptibility to bone breakage. To study the genetic basis of bone strength, an F cross was produced from lines of hens that had been divergently selected for bone index from a commercial pedigreed White Leghorn population. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) affecting the bone index and component traits of the index (tibiotarsal and humeral strength and keel radiographic density) were mapped using phenotypic data from 372 F individuals in 32 F families. Genotypes for 136 microsatellite markers in 27 linkage groups covering ∼80% of the genome were analysed for association with phenotypes using within-family regression analyses. There was one significant QTL on chromosome 1 for bone index and the component traits of tibiotarsal and humeral breaking strength. Additive effects for tibiotarsal breaking strength represented 34% of the trait standard deviation and 7.6% of the phenotypic variance of the trait. These QTL for bone quality in poultry are directly relevant to commercial populations
Effective attraction between oscillating electrons in a plasmoid via acoustic waves exchange
We consider the effective interaction between electrons due to the exchange
of virtual acoustic waves in a low temperature plasma. Electrons are supposed
to participate in rapid radial oscillations forming a spherically symmetric
plasma structure. We show that under certain conditions this effective
interaction can result in the attraction between oscillating electrons and can
be important for the dynamics of a plasmoid. Some possible applications of the
obtained results to the theory of natural long-lived plasma structures are also

Raising Dairy Calves
In the Corn Belt it costs approximately $100 to raise a heifer calf from birth to producing age. About three-fourths of this charge is for feed; the rest is for labor, housing and other items.
The attitude that the raising of heifers is a too expensive practice is held by some dairymen with grade herds who are located in the denser dairy regions where whole milk is· the product sold and feed prices are usually high. Farmer-dairymen, who sell cream and have skim milk available, and breeders of purebreds generally do not question the advisability of raising heifers. Purebred heifers cost but little, if any, more to raise than grades and have about twice their value
Entangled and disentangled evolution for a single atom in a driven cavity
For an atom in an externally driven cavity, we show that special initial
states lead to near-disentangled atom-field evolution, and superpositions of
these can lead to near maximally-entangled states. Somewhat counterintutively,
we find that (moderate) spontaneous emission in this system actually leads to a
transient increase in entanglement beyond the steady-state value. We also show
that a particular field correlation function could be used, in an experimental
setting, to track the time evolution of this entanglement
Wakefield damping for the CLIC crab cavity
A crab cavity is required in the CLIC to allow effective head-on collision of
bunches at the IP. A high operating frequency is preferred as the deflection
voltage required for a given rotation angle and the RF phase tolerance for a
crab cavity are inversely proportional to the operating frequency. The short
bunch spacing of the CLIC scheme and the high sensitivity of the crab cavity to
dipole kicks demand very high damping of the inter-bunch wakes, the major
contributor to the luminosity loss of colliding bunches. This paper
investigates the nature of the wakefields in the CLIC crab cavity and the
possibility of using various damping schemes to suppress them effectively
Innovations in ground and airborne technologies as reference and for training and validation : terrestrial laser scanning (TLS)
The use of terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) to provide accurate estimates of 3D forest canopy structure and above-ground biomass (AGB) has developed rapidly. Here, we provide an overview of the state of the art in using TLS for estimating forest structure for AGB. We provide a general overview of TLS methods and then outline the advantages and limitations of TLS for estimating AGB. We discuss the specific type of measurements that TLS can provide, tools and methods that have been developed for turning TLS point clouds into quantifiable metrics of tree size and volume, as well as some of the challenges to improving these measurements. We discuss the role of TLS for enabling accurate calibration and validation (cal/val) of Earth observation (EO)-derived estimates of AGB from spaceborne lidar and RADAR missions. We give examples of the types of TLS equipment that are in use and how these might develop in future, and we show examples of where TLS has already been applied to measuring AGB in the tropics in particular. Comparing TLS with harvested AGB shows r(2)>0.95 for all studies thus far, with absolute agreement to within 10% at the individual tree level for all trees and to within 2% in the majority of cases. Current limitations to the uptake of TLS include the capital cost of some TLS equipment, processing complexity and the relatively small coverage that is possible. We argue that combining TLS measurements with the existing ground-based survey approaches will allow improved allometric models and better cal/val, resulting in improved regional and global estimates of AGB from space, with better-characterised, lower uncertainties. The development of new, improved equipment and methods will accelerate this process and make TLS more accessible

Orthographic facilitation in oral vocabulary acquisition
An experiment investigated whether exposure to orthography facilitates oral vocabulary learning. A total of 58 typically developing children aged 8-9 years were taught 12 nonwords. Children were trained to associate novel phonological forms with pictures of novel objects. Pictures were used as referents to represent novel word meanings. For half of the nonwords children were additionally exposed to orthography, although they were not alerted to its presence, nor were they instructed to use it. After this training phase a nonword-picture matching posttest was used to assess learning of nonword meaning, and a spelling posttest was used to assess learning of nonword orthography. Children showed robust learning for novel spelling patterns after incidental exposure to orthography. Further, we observed stronger learning for nonword-referent pairings trained with orthography. The degree of orthographic facilitation observed in posttests was related to children's reading levels, with more advanced readers showing more benefit from the presence of orthography
An ion ring in a linear multipole trap for optical frequency metrology
A ring crystal of ions trapped in a linear multipole trap is studied as a
basis for an optical frequency standard. The equilibrium conditions and cooling
possibilities are discussed through an analytical model and molecular dynamics
simulations. A configuration which reduces the frequency sensitivity to the
fluctuations of the number of trapped ions is proposed. The systematic shifts
for the electric quadrupole transition of calcium ions are evaluated for this
ring configuration. This study shows that a ring of 10 or 20 ions allows to
reach a short term stability better than for a single ion without introducing
limiting long term fluctuations
