Slot-vee antenna-coupled electro-optic modulator
We have demonstrated slot vee antenna-coupled electro-optic modulators at 24 GHz. (optical wavelength 1.3 µm). The lost vee antenna design allows for a more robust microwave signal feed into the LiNbO_3 chip, where the modulator itself acts as a slab waveguide for the microwave signal. The antenna-coupled design overcomes the velocity mismatch problems inherent in LiNbO_3 traveling-wave electro-optic modulators
Perspectives on the Missiological Legacy of Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation
Upon the occasion of the 500th anniversary Martin Luther’s publication of his 95 theses, this composite article brings together five perspectives on the missiological legacy of the reformer and the subsequent Protestant Reformation. The blend of voices makes clear that Luther and the subsequent Protestant Reformation do not have a simple missiological legacy but rather various legacies: theological, ecclesiological, political, and practical; some of which co-exist, and even collide, in the same ecclesiastical community. The scandalous legacy of a splintered and splintering church remains. Yet, demonstrations of mutual recognition, reciprocal respect, and genuine fellowship can be found in certain missiological circles

The Mystery Deepens: Spitzer Observations of Cool White Dwarfs
We present 4.5m and 8m photometric observations of 18 cool white
dwarfs obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope. Our observations demonstrate
that four white dwarfs with T_eff< 6000 K show slightly depressed mid-infrared
fluxes relative to white dwarf models. In addition, another white dwarf with a
peculiar optical and near-infrared spectral energy distribution (LHS 1126) is
found to display significant flux deficits in Spitzer observations. These
mid-infrared flux deficits are not predicted by the current white dwarf models
including collision induced absorption due to molecular hydrogen. We postulate
that either the collision induced absorption calculations are incomplete or
there are other unrecognized physical processes occuring in cool white dwarf
atmospheres. The spectral energy distribution of LHS 1126 surprisingly fits a
Rayleigh-Jeans spectrum in the infrared, mimicking a hot white dwarf with
effective temperature well in excess of 10 K. This implies that the source
of this flux deficit is probably not molecular absorption but some other
process.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, ApJ in press, 10 May 200
Spitzer IRAC Secondary Eclipse Photometry of the Transiting Extrasolar Planet HAT-P-1b
We report Spitzer/IRAC photometry of the transiting giant exoplanet HAT-P-1b
during its secondary eclipse. This planet lies near the postulated boundary
between the pM and pL-class of hot Jupiters, and is important as a test of
models for temperature inversions in hot Jupiter atmospheres. We derive eclipse
depths for HAT-P-1b, in units of the stellar flux, that are: 0.080% +/-
0.008%,[3.6um], 0.135% +/- 0.022%,[4.5um],0.203% +/- 0.031%,[5.8um], and
$0.238% +/- 0.040%,[8.0um]. These values are best fit using an atmosphere with
a modest temperature inversion, intermediate between the archetype inverted
atmosphere (HD209458b) and a model without an inversion. The observations also
suggest that this planet is radiating a large fraction of the available stellar
irradiance on its dayside, with little available for redistribution by
circulation. This planet has sometimes been speculated to be inflated by tidal
dissipation, based on its large radius in discovery observations, and on a
non-zero orbital eccentricity allowed by the radial velocity data. The timing
of the secondary eclipse is very sensitive to orbital eccentricity, and we find
that the central phase of the eclipse is 0.4999 +/- 0.0005. The difference
between the expected and observed phase indicates that the orbit is close to
circular, with a 3-sigma limit of |e cosw| < 0.002.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, 1 table. Accepted by The Astrophysical Journal,
