Gender HCI Issues in End-User Software Engineering Environments

Although gender differences in a technological world are receiving significant research attention, much of the research and practice has aimed at how society and education can impact the successes and retention of female computer science professionals. The possibility of gender issues within software, however, has received almost no attention. We hypothesize that factors within software have a strong impact on how well female problem solvers can make use of the software. Evidence from other fields and investigations of our own have revealed evidence supporting this hypothesis

From 18.01.07 to 23.02.07, the Dagstuhl Seminar 07081 ``End-User Software Engineering\u27\u27 was held in the International Conference and Research Center (IBFI), Schloss Dagstuhl. During the seminar, several participants presented their current research, and ongoing work and open problems were discussed. Abstracts of the presentations given during the seminar as well as abstracts of seminar results and ideas are put together in this paper. Atrial natriuretic peptide in heart failure

AbstractAtrial natriuretic peptide is a peptide hormone of cardiac origin, which is released in response to atrial distension and serves to maintain sodium homeostasis and inhibit activation of the reninangiotensin-aldosterone system. Congestive heart failure is a clinical syndrome characterized by increased cardiac volume and pressure overload with an inability to excrete a sodium load, which is associated with increased activity of systemic neurohumoral and local autocrine and paracrine mechanisms. Circulating atrial natriuretic peptide is greatly increased in congestive heart failure as a result of increased synthesis and release of this hormone. Atrial natriuretic peptide has emerged as an important diagnostic and prognostic serum marker in congestive heart failure. In early heart failure, it may play a key role in preserving the compensated state of asymptomatic left ventricular dysfunction. Despite increased circulating atrial natriuretic peptide in heart failure, the kidney retains sodium and is hyporesponsive to exogenous and endogenous atrial natriuretic peptide. The mechanism for the attenuated renal response is multifactorial and includes renal hypoperfusion, activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone and sympathetic nervous systems. Therapeutic strategies to potentiate the biologic actions of atrial natriuretic peptide may prolong the asymptomatic phase and delay progression to overt congestive heart failure

From concrete forms to generalized abstractions through perspective-oriented analysis of logical relationships

We believe concreteness, direct manipulation and responsiveness in a visual programming language increase its usefulness. However, these characteristics present a challenge in generalizing programs for reuse, especially when concrete examples are used as one way of achieving concreteness. In this paper, we present a technique to solve this problem by deriving generality automatically through the analysis of logical relationships among concrete program entities from the perspective of a particular computational goal. Use of this technique allows a fully general form-based program with reusable abstractions to be derived from one that was specified in terms of concrete examples and direct manipulation

Rosanna Raymond’s SaVAge K’lub at the eighth Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art

This visual essay is based on a conversation in June 2016 between artist Rosanna Raymond and academic Karen Jacobs on Raymond’s art work, The SaVAge K’lub, with which she contributed to the eighth Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art. While this artwork challenges a variety of stereotypical misrepresentations of Pacific people and their arts, it unexpectedly appeared to reinforce certain perceptions too

Representation design benchmarks : a design-time aid for VPL navigable static representations

A weakness of many interactive visual programming languages (VPLs) is their static representations. Lack of an adequate static representation places a heavy cognitive burden on a VPL's programmers, because they must remember potentially long dynamic sequences of screen displays in order to understand a previously-written program. However, although this problem is widely acknowledged, research on how to design better static representations for interactive VPLs is still in its infancy. Building upon the cognitive dimensions developed for programming languages by cognitive psychologists Green and others, we have developed a set of concrete benchmarks for VPL designers to use when designing new static representations.
